Well I had my first baby last May and ended up with horrible postpartum anxiety. After that experience I would actually consider the placenta thing if I had another child. They tried to put me on some stuff for it but I got a book about stress and anxiety and learned to ride the waves.

My horses have always eaten their placentas and never seem to be depressed!

I'm not even in a relationship, but I've thought about this for years, since the first time I read about it somewhere. I'd definitely do it.

I always thought I might look into banking cord blood, but I don't know about the other stuff....

Sounds gimmicky. That placenta matter would be so processed (especially via the "cooked" method) I doubt there'd be much left that couldn't be supplied in other ways...less expensively.

I'd love to see a real clinical study.

I don't think you cook it (though some probably do). I think it is dehydrated, which wouldn't destroy all the nutrients.

Yet i keep coming back to read it....so tell on! I can handle it and well, could lose a lot more pounds. And I am thinking of maybe having a baby and these things are things I never, ever would of thought of so it is educational too.

This is facinating! You can google DIY placenta capsule and it will send you to websites showing step-by-step the process. As I'm about to be a grandma, I'll link that site to my DIL!

Cooking the placenta is one of the procedures used in processing the placenta for use in pills. There are different methods, but none of them sound particularly convincing to me.

I think placenta consumption is probably really useful for herbivorous mammals (like horses) that don't have ready access to iron supplements and can't exactly fry up a juicy steak to replenish their depleted protein reserves. Da hoomanz, on the other hand, have habits and resources that probably make eating their placentas unnecessary.

I'm curious about the hormone content, though I'm not sure that's a convincing angle, either.

Well long story short the hubby forgot about the placenta. He was quite freaked out.

I don't know...it just seems like a gimmick to me. I think banking cord blood would be more worth the money. I mean, really...animals eat it for certain nourishment that we as humans can get it elsewhere. All I know is my Great Grandmother and 9 kids and never ate hers...she did however grow her own veggies and ate very healthy after each one. She also talked about focusing on certain vitamins through meats and fruits. Now, I can't speak about PPD, and wouldn't because I've never had to experience it. My SIL has though and it was horrible. They gave her hormone therapy to adjust her estrogen levels. It just seems like a way for someone to make money to me...I could be wrong, though.

This. Totally this.

I mean, if you have disposable income at the time, I don't see how it could really hurt anybody. It makes a fun story for posterity and it's a way to justify a press release with your name on it. But those are the only reasons I would do it.
