Whenever me and the Hubs do road trips, I always try to find a place like that. I want to go to Austin and get one of those giant donuts! Went to a place in the Bahamas once that was featured on one of those shows. FUN!

My hubs and I usually spend our Cmas money on a road trip. We were thinking of heading to The Alamo, so I would be in TX next year :)

You should check out The Contessa on the Riverwalk for a hotel. We stayed there a couple of years ago, and it was really nice. had a three hour lunch one day. Just ordered different courses, dined outside...all the ducks would just come up and hang out. There is a little heart shaped island in the river. We gor to see one couple get engaged and one couple get married! All over lunch! LOL

Any French ladies on here lately? Really want to plan France or Italy next for a big vacay.

Wow! That's cool! I think thinking about taking a tour through Italy. It would be Venice, Rome and Tuscany. Where would you recommend spending the most days? Some places, after a couple of days you've seen enough...some you could stay a week and not get enough of the attractions!

Near Texarkana, TX here. Very corner, extreme NE Texas.
I'm to the left of you...between you and Dallas, actually.

Despite power outages and being unable make much-needed errands at times, I've been loving the weather. Even when it gets a little too chilly, I'll take it any day over triple-digits with 80% humidity!

I spent 9 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Venice, I did two day-trips: one to Tuscany and one on the Amalfi Coast.
Here are my travel journals for these two cities.
Rome: http://escapingmycubicle.blogspot.ca/2012/07/rome-italy-part-1.html
Venice: http://escapingmycubicle.blogspot.ca/2012/07/venice-italy-part-2.html

It gets really hot in Italy in the summer. I wouldn't go in July or August. Rome is a big city so you might want to spend the most days there. Tuscany is the country side. A good day-trip is perfect. The Alamafi coast is simply stunning. I would definitely go back there.
Hope it helps!

Neat! The ice missed us but just barely. I love cold weather, though.

I loved Tuscany. Rome was crowded. I loved the sites but the people got on my nerves. I loved Parma and Bologna. LOVE Florence! But especially Naples and the islands (ex is from Stromboli). France is good...we lived there 18 months. But I prefer Prague over Paris ANY day! And if you go over to Venice, you might as well go on to Slovenia and Croatia! For that matter, you could spend a lifetime and not see it all!

The main sites in Rome are indeed crowded but the streets around them are not. I was always able to find some peace and quiet in Rome. You just have to go off the beaten path.
I didn't like Naples.
This year I am going to Austria and Hungary. I would love to go to Prague but as a female travelling alone, I don't want to travel too much between the cities. I like to stay in one city - Vienna this time - and make day-trips. It just feel safer for me.

Naples has it's grimy areas but I love the quiet restaurants and areas. But also it's close enough to head down to Sorento for a bit! Sorento is so beautiful and the olive groves are pretty. And the oil makers are so kind to let you in to sample and talk! I think the thing I love best about Naples and Sorento are the old style craftsmen. My daughter had a cameo carved from a shell she picked and she got to watch the entire process. And my kids got to watch pans beaten out of copper. There are few enough real tourists that the people treat you like new friends.

I loved Austria and Hungary! You should take a friend along so you feel more comfortable traveling. I loved getting out into the Austrian countryside!

I loved Sorento!! The Amalfi coast is sooo beautiful.

I would love to bring a friend with me but people always have good excuses not to travel. They don't have enough money or they don't have the time. Traveling is my passion. I decided last year that I wouldn't wait for anybody anymore to travel.

Good for you! Years ago my mother was in the same position and traveled a few times with friends, came to visit my family in Europe a lot...but what she wanted to do was explore. Finally I persuaded her to do what she wanted. She has youth hostel passes for all over the world and train passes and went everywhere! 2 years ago, at 89 years old, she decided she wanted to take a trip to see the fall leaves in the NE. My son got married in September so Mom came to the wedding. Then she spent a week in Philly, reacquainting herself and a week in DC. Then she went southwestern VA to visit my daughter and see her new home then NYC to catch the bus for the leaf trip. All total she was gone 2 months and had a BALL!. She visited Morocco and went places I'd never go (but I prefer lux to trekking), traveled all over Egypt. Made good friends in South Africa and Kenya. She has no mental or verbal filter so people think she's a hoot!

That's an impressive resume. I hope I am as much fun as her when I am 89 years old!
My goal in life is to visit at least 40 countries. I am up to 9 now but I still have a couple years in front of me.
