I spent 9 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Venice, I did two day-trips: one to Tuscany and one on the Amalfi Coast.
Here are my travel journals for these two cities.
Rome: http://escapingmycubicle.blogspot.ca/2012/07/rome-italy-part-1.html
Venice: http://escapingmycubicle.blogspot.ca/2012/07/venice-italy-part-2.html

It gets really hot in Italy in the summer. I wouldn't go in July or August. Rome is a big city so you might want to spend the most days there. Tuscany is the country side. A good day-trip is perfect. The Alamafi coast is simply stunning. I would definitely go back there.
Hope it helps!
Thanks! Yeah, it definitely does!

Bob's mom and Marie T - attagurls! That's the way to live!
my sister shocked us all when she started going on holidays alone (she isn't one for having get up and go) - she chose to go on guided coaching holidays, mainly Germany and Austria for her. She said people always chatted, different people always invited her along with them when it was an free/unscheduled time and easy to say thanks but no if she wanted to have some alone time.

if no one else wants to go, then go alone and do what you want
or
sit home wishing you were doing it and regretting not doing it

no brainer!

Thanks Minxy! Before leaving I was really scared because I knew that if something happened during the trip I couldn't rely on anybody but myself. When I came back I was so proud of myself. It did wonders to my self-confidence.
Say hello to your sister for me ;)

Oh Marie, I know you'll have a great time! When we lived in Belgium, my neighbor adored my children (her DIL didn't like her so she never got to see her grandkids...unless the DIL wanted money) so once in a while, my best friend and I would leave all the kids with her for a few days and take a last minute road trip! Once we even went to Monaco for the Tour! We took camping gear but met so many nice people, we always had a place to stay!

Minxy, do you speak German?
and so you should feel proud, happy and confident honey! nothing like doing it to conquer the fears eh?

I speak a smattering of schoolgirl German - my sister not a bit!
She went with English tour operators and boarded the coach here with peeps from all over the UK. She had no trouble tho - many Germans speak English.

If you are interested in going there then I would highly recommend it. Maybe booking thru the Uk if no USA operator sells them.

There are some wonderful cruise holidays on the Rhine to be had too - nice to take your hotel from town to town!
The Rhine is beautiful with lots of Cinderella style castles (so different to English ones) and great wineries lol
