Just an update for you all... We were struck by another 'severe' earthquake, this one bigger and centred 6miles from my work, and under 5 miles deep (one thing we have learnt pretty quickly in NZ is that the magnitude isn't the biggest thing like we always thought - its the depth as well, so there could be a 8 but be 30 miles deep, and have less impact than a 6.6 that is as shallow as this one) FYI our Christchurch quake that destroyed the city in Feb 2011 was only a 6.3 but 3 miles deep. The scientest people have described the intensity of what we felt in that small semi rural area as being the same as Christchurch, we are just lucky we don't have all the high rises to come down and cause the same devastation. But anyway.. it was f**king awful. But I’m safe and that is the main thing. Only have one tiny cut on me, so I definitely picked the best area to duck for cover!! Edited because I don't need randoms seeing personal details :) Edited by BobMarley, Aug 19 2013, 12:30 AM.

OMG! Thank God you are safe! That is the most important thing. I am so happy that you didn't have more injuries, you really lucked out. Of course, I live in an area that almost never has earthquakes. If we get a 3.0 we think the world is going to end. Give us three feet of snow with two inches coming down in an hour and sleet and gusts of wind up to 60 mph and that is cake to us. I wouldn't know what to do in an earthquake. I am just glad you are safe |

Jen, bloody hell! It must be more awful being so close to the epi-centre. I was at work, I work in a dy care centre. The older children all started crying & we had a few upset children. It was good to see so many parents come down quickly to pick up their children. It felt so big, & lasted so long... |

bloody hell Jen - really glad you are safe and unharmed!! you too new girl! It's hard to comprehend what it is like for those of us who don't live in earthquake prone places (my bed vibrated for a few mins once when a small one hit miles away - and that was a very small one and only later discovered it was a quake that caused it). Your writing brought it home - ditto with newgirl - those kids must have been terrified Hope you get to borrow that 4x4 a while longer - it sounds like it will be more useful than your car at the moment |

Thanks guys, and Newgirl it was horrendous huh! Glad to see Wellington didn't get hurt as much this time now it was centred in land.. all I can compare it to was being on a theme park ride that throws you in all angles and with extreme force.. BUT... I HAVE MY CAR BACK :) |

It was SHOCKING! & it kept going & going & going! All you could do was text your loved ones (phoning didnt work) because you have no idea how it has effected other areas. That is a scary moment until you get texts back to say people are safe. Yes, Welly held up so well. Seddon doesn't look great, sad for them. They are such a small community. My hubby's last day at work was Friday before starting a new job. He didn't get to finish up or even clean his desk lol! They were told to get out. That building is shut now due to a burst water main in the men's toilets of his floor. He had the day off today because his new job was also shut down. That lift shaft is the scariest thing in Welly tbh! |

The older toddlers were scared the babies didn't realise what was going on. I had a little group of the scared ones all curled up with me in some pillows until they calmed down. Was good all the mums & daddies picked them up so quick. I haven't idea how they didn't get stuck in that awful traffic out of Welly! |

OK, this is O/T but HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!!! I've just been blessed with my first grandbaby! A little boy (no name yet), born at 11:30pm, 9 pounds, 9 oz and 22 inches long! I'd post a pic but it's too complicated and I'm too stupid! |
