My Mom unfortunately popped up with shingles... any one of a good home remedy to help with the itching/pain? My Aunt suggested MSG to help, but I always like to get others ideas. All I know is I wish they had the chickenpox vaccine when i was a kid!

I'e had shingles and it sucks. Have her wear gloves so she won't scratch too much. The scratching was what irritated me the most. It is pretty damn painful

When I had them, I found this helpful. Plus oatmeal baths

for the pain and aches I can highly recommend Arnica. It is homeopathic and works (even on animals - I got someone to try it on a Rottweiler with arthritis, they are never without it now!). It isn't just for aches and bruises but not for broken skin. gels are better for ease of use.

The best one in my opinion is from SBC - it is a gel and sinks in on its own if you are too sore to rub or rubbing will lead to scratching. It has no side effects, won't interfere with any other treatment/medication, can be used as often as wanted or needed (brilliant for bruises - especially deep tissue) and won't stain anything. Not sure if you can get it over there tho - here I get it from qvc. ( i did try to find a link for you but googlefu keeps giving me uk results the bastards even tho I specified US)

Hope she feels better soon

I'm def willing to try anything. I feel sorry for anyone that has ever had to deal with this. She's lucky that it's smaller patches...looking a bit better today :)

Atarax! (Generic name hydroxyzine) it was a life saver when I had shingles.
(Awful side story- I had shingles when I got a call for a job interview I really wanted. Unfortunately it was on a boat, I have long hair it was crazy windy, and I looked like an itchy& awkward cousin it. My dad drove me because I couldn't position myself in a way I could drive, and I made the HORRIFIC decision to wear hose under my suit. After the interviewer brushed me off saying I seemed "agitated" and "nervous," I remember begging my dad to drive to the nearest McDonalds where I pealed the hose off my shingles blisters. Guess who did NOT get the job? Never combine interviews+ hose + and shingles. )

Good grief, girl! Hers are in the unfortunate spot right along the bra line. Only one blister popped and man it's been a pain--literally. When my husbands not home during the day, I've just been telling her to take it all off and relax! Many super baggy night shirts have been bought. I feel so bad for her. They gave her meds that are an every 4 hour thing, but they seem to be working pretty good.

I couldn't imagine wearing hose over that! :'(

I have a lovely Arnica/medical grade pot lotion, so soothing and smells so good! I use it for my arthritis and it soaks in, relieves the itch and pain and calms me! And when my mother had shingles, it was also under her bra line. We got her some cotton camisole tops and they helped a lot.

I take Hydroxyzine for a skin disorder. Keeps me from itching and breaking out in hives!!

They gave me some cream called Acyclovir. It seems to be helping it heal faster...not really soothing though. Keep the area clean and dry, they say. Of course "They" don't have DD's! lol...she's doing better today though. :) Been dealing for about 10 days now

My sister first got shingles when she was 18. Pretty young. She still gets them occasionally.

That is one thing my hubs and I keep talking about when we "discuss" kids. I had chicken pox, he did not and what to do if or when we have kids. Are shingles from having or not having the pox?

Once you have chicken pox, the shingle virus is already inside you. You can get a shot at 50 they will help shorten the virus if it ever does show up.

Here is shameless self-promotion for my online magazine... the new issue is out if you are looking for something to read: http://www.aprettierplace.net/2013/11/fashion-issue-november-12th-2013-life.html

It is more thoughtful and less snarky than what I usually post here ;)
