During the Battle of Loos (25 September – 14 October 1915) the French town was the scene of the strange drama of Madamoiselle Emilienne Moreau. She was a 17-year old lycée student whose main ambition in life was to become a schoolteacher. When the battle began she opened a first aid post in her house. German snipers soon made the house their prime target. So Mlle Moreau, borrowed pistol in hand, went ouside and shot two of them. This action earned her the military medal, Croix de Guerre, and a mention in General Haig's despatches as 'The Joan of Arc of Loos'.
