Not to open another Broly can of worms or anything but I see a lot of people arguing that Goku in Movie 8 has to be weaker than his canon CG self because he was impressed by SSJ Broly tanking Vegeta's kick.

What do you guys think of this argument?

I personally don't believe this myself but I see a lot of people arguing this on both DBZF and Neoseeker.

I don't understand how being surprised determines one's ability. Basically, their main argument is that Goku can't be surprised about Broly tanking Vegeta's kick unless he was weaker than his CG self. Seems like a load of Conjecture to me as well.

Surprise feats can be the worst to go on.

SSJ 2 Gohan forms, and Cell powers up. Everyone is like "oh shit, Cell is amazing!!!!". Moments later Cell has 18 forced through his mouth.

Goku being impressed by RSSj Broly tanking whatever Vegeta had can basically just be Broly confirming whatever suhispanic ions Goku had about Broly being the LSSj. The night before an extremely restrained Broly had a short scrimmage with Goku, and that very same day, earlier on, King Kai told Goku about a threat to the galaxy which Goku again confirmed with the remains of the destroyed cities Broly invaded.

/threadend.

I understand the thought process behind this particular argument, but if you really analyze what that would actually imply, you're fucking stupid or biased to believe this.

Just curious, what would that imply?

Well, let's examine the claim.

Goku is weaker than his CG self, because he is surprised at Broly tanking Vegeta effortlessly. This implies that in this timeline, Vegeta is far stronger than Goku. Which is reflected in canon material, when Vegeta comes out of the RoSaT for the first time, and Goku is about to go in. From there, there's only really one thing that could've happened which would've been strong enough to influence the outcome of the claim. Vegeta killed Semi Perfect Cell. Then someone told Goku and Gohan and they left the chamber. Therefore, Vegeta remained the strongest and that's what triggered Goku's surprise reaction when someone stronger than him was dispatched so easily.

^ Why on Earth would anyone go through the trouble of presenting that theory, and believing it, when absolutely nothing in the film implies it but a 5 second on-screen reaction?

I dunno.
