(OOC: I know most of my posts are about sort of the same thing right now but until I get some replies my character can't really progress so I'm kind of stuck on it.)

Swimming was one of the few activities Donnan could do as well now as before his leg was injured. He enjoyed the rather weightless feeling he had when he was in the water, for even though the scales said he weighed a precious little, he always felt heavy and weighed down. The water took that away from him. It also seemed like even his bad leg could move better in the cool fluid.

Due to the rain that had persisted in a taunting drizzle the past four days, Donnan hadn't been able to go for a swim. Not that he objected to a light rain, really, except that he had to leave his cane several feet above the lake so it didn't accidentally fall in, and he wouldn't be able to get out of the water fast enough if the weather got worse.

Today, however, the rain had stopped, and only a hazy patch of grey clouds in the distance gave sign of it. Donnan had smiled all through his classes, and when the last one let out for the day, he dashed to the lake as quickly as his weakened limbs could take him.

He dropped his cane beneath a nearby tree and slowly limped to the edge of the lake. Thank Merlin that it dropped off at a fairly steady rate there, and he only had to walk a short time before he could submerge his body in the icy depths. He smiled. He felt better already.

Donnan wondered if he would be able to get a tan. Perhaps if his skin pigmentation was better, the other kids wouldn't look at him like he was some kind of freak. Well, he supposed, it had to be hard to look at a person and see each and every one of their tiny veins shining through their pallid skin.

This thought in mind, Donnan swam out until he couldn't touch the bottom anymore. The water was colder here, but the sun was shining more fiercely. He wondered at that vaguely, but as he tread water for a while, he decided that it didn't matter.

Twenty minutes later, he realized that he had swam out farther than he had meant to, and when he turned back, the shore was a long way off. He shook his head at his own foolishness and turned back. Just then, an all too familiar dizzying sensation came over him, clouding his vision. He struggled to stay conscious, flailing his arms and legs even when he could no longer see or hear what was going on around him.

The wind was beginning to pick up, fluttering the leaves in every direction as they struggled to remain attached to their vine. The rough rock ground was tearing into the soft soles of her feet. Eresai winced as another tiny rocked lodged its way into her skin only to be kicked out by another moments later. In hindsight, going barefoot might not have been the best decision, but she had wanted to go for a swim and going without shoes had seemed easier at the time.

The bikini she sported was simple. The black nylon material was of the strapless top kind and boy shorts. There was a cerulean colored blue along the edges that gave it just enough pop followed by a wrap around skirt of the same color for the waist. The untamed curls that normal flew about in the wind were plated back in a rough ponytail held by a leather string. The idea of chilly water causing goosebumps against her skin was a rush. She enjoyed anything that felt even the least bit insane, especially if it meant she got to hurt someone, but that soo rarely happened on the Hogwarts Grounds.

Nearing the water from the base of the mountain pass, she shed the wrap and gazed out at the glossy surface. This had been the quickest way to reach the water by means of her cottage even it was now the roughest method of transport. Her eyes squinted against the sunlight that reflected off the surface. There was something out there.... Tilting her head to the side a bit, she backed away from the edge and heaved herself onto a large rock perched above the water.

Taking a deep breath, the young woman dived into the lake. Her body sunk for several moments as she allowed the cold water to rush over her petite body, before her legs began to kick to the surface and toward the middle. Breaking free, her lungs gulped in air and arms began to thrust heavily into the water to take their mistress toward the incessant splashing nearby.

Hazel eyes blinked back the water droplet that had formed on the surface of her eyelashes as she took in the presence of a young boy barely managing to stay afloat, if what he was doing could be called floating. Treading water, her arm wrapped around his waist and began to pull him against her body as she kicked back toward the shore.

Somebody had him around the waist. Donnan fought the urge to fight against whomever it was. He could drown them both. Still, having hands around him like this recalled many less than pleasant memories. He felt bile rise in his throat and had to push it down. At least he wasn't having to fight to remain conscious now. Or not as much. He still felt as though it would be hard to move his body, although the adrenaline rushing through him was keeping his eyes open.

Donnan was just conscious enough to register that he didn't know the young woman who was currently rescuing him. He felt his stomach roll again as her hands slipped a little and rubbed over his chest. The combination of her arms on his stomach and the water slipping and sliding over his small, slick form was making him more nauseous than he cared to admit.

"I can do it," he whispered, his voice small. He knew that his self control wasn't going to hold up for much longer. Soon the restraint on his body would make him struggle, and he would bring them both under water. It would be better if she let him go. At least then, if he couldn't do it alone, he would be the only one to drown.

Eresai found herself grateful that she was a strong swimmer. It had been a couple years, since she had last been through the proper training needed to execute missions such as this. Weights had been placed on her legs and arms to help weigh down the body. The first time she had been through the simulation there had been a near drowning incident, because she was unable to cope with the changing body mass. While she wouldn't call this boy particularly heavy, her body was not used to the added weight to try and keep both their heads above water. At least in the simulation she hadn't been forced to try and keep the weights above the water so they could breathe.

"Oh yea right kid." Water sputtered from her lips as her face dipped below a particularly heafty wave. "I can barely do this, and I'm not borderline blacking out." Her eyes drifted uneasily toward his face that was covered in distress and a look of nausea was dripping from his facial expression. The moment he had spoken the words that he could do she had been forced to hold back a chortle. She was an extremely strong swimmer, and she was having difficulties. Something about the cold water and the salt that just ate at her energy, his too probably.

Her toes brushed at the sand below as she began to near standing area. Heaving herself to an upright position, she left an arm circled around his waist to partially drag him against her toward the sand. Sai eased him to the sandy beach with just a trickle of water washing across it, before dropping her own body with a residual thud to the watery sand. Her breathing was only partially labored to her credit, though this only proved that she would have to start swimming more regularly, perhaps even with weights.

Sitting up, her fingers threaded through the mass of curls as she glanced back at her charge. He didn't seem the sort to just go off into the water alone what with the one leg and all, but he had seemed okay for a bit. There was obviously something physically strong about the boy for him to have made it that far. That alone intrigued her. "You okay?"

Donnan couldn't believe they'd made it to the shore line. The moment she let go of his body he pushed himself a few feet away from her, though in retrospect it was uncalled for. Rude even. She'd just saved his life... But he couldn't bare to think about the way her hands had been all over his body. It was too close to the weird ones who used to chase him around when he was living on Knockturn Alley, and that thought... His stomach rolled and he pushed himself onto his hands and knees, shaking from the effort, but afraid that he was going to sick up if he didn't. When he finally got his stomach under control, he let his weak arms drop out from under him, landing in the sand.

"You okay?"

No I'm bloody well not okay, Donnan thought... but that would be rude. He turned just his head on the ground to look at her. She seemed exhausted. She had just saved his life...

"I... yeah," he whispered, his voice even more hoarse than usual, if that was possible. "I'm... tired.... thank you... for helping me."

He couldn't bring himself to say anything more at this point. His adrenaline had all but gone by now and he could barely keep his eyes open. He was so weak... Not eating could do that to a body, he supposed bemusedly. Not that it really mattered. One way or another, he'd be dead by the end of next summer anyway. What did it matter if it happened a little sooner than he'd anticipated? Donnan closed his eyes, letting his breathing slow....

Brow furrowed, Eresai watched as the boy moved away as though repulsed by the very idea of another human being touching him, especially that of a female. Though on that last thought, she was really just adding airs to the situation. In her line of work it always seemed as though she were being discredited because she was a woman and not some manly man that could supposedly handle everything. Whatever. Her gender had more perks anyway.

He was fine? Just tired? Hell, she was tired. Her body had just dragged the two of them back to sure, and he wasn't even going to say thanks. Well. His sentence continued to jabber on during which he did thank her, forcing her to bite down on her tongue and bring about a small smile. "Anytime kid." Her eyes closed with fatigue while her hands rested in a fold at the navel of her stomach. The posture was one taught for relaxation and decrease in breathing and stamina levels. Trying not to take his current attitude toward her personally, her head turned to the side as though continuing to feign exhaustion. While she was tired, her own breathing had become significantly less labored, and his had increased in capacity before finally dropping to barely audible levels. Twisting back around with idea that he was all better at this point, her eyes had to take a moment to realize the boy was barely breathing. Damn, this would require her trying to save him again.

He was unbelievably frail. Seriously, he could be a weight loss spokesman for woman. That same petite figure seemed to be his undoing at this moment. Pushing herself to her feet, she brushed at the sand covering her body as she headed into the wooded area surrounding the beach. There were a number of edible fruits, berries and nuts. As part of a dare to herself, she had spent a week surviving off the land around here. She had barely gone a couple hundred feet, when her eyes first spotted the leaves of a wild strawberry bush quickly followed by a dewberry bush.

Eresai pulled at the black berries of the dewberry plant, before switching her attention to the larger and redder of the strawberries. Grabbing one of the larger leaves of a coniferous plant, the berries were wrapped together. Her feet took off back to the water at a run. Collapsing next to his body, she eased him into a good position on his back with his chin up in the air and at a tilt. "Okay, so I figure we're past the awkward stage of our relationship. So...please don't bite me. That's just kinky and weird." Hoping he would see this for what it was - her trying to nourish him back to health - her fingers slipped several of the berries past her lips, then cracked open the stem of the larger leaf to pour its sap into with the fruit. The same fingers massaged the base of his throat in hopes of getting him to swallow the food. She was not going to lose another person, another innocent person, if she could help it. Even if he did hate her afterward.

A soft murmuring drifted through Donnan's consciousness, but he couldn't make out the words. It was a pleasant voice, though, he registered. It made him feel oddly safe, a feeling he was less than accustomed to. It was probably this feeling that allowed him to take the material that entered his mouth without a fight. It was sweet tasting- a berry of some sort? He felt compelled to swallow it, and to his immense surprise, felt no resulting urge to be sick. Maybe the trick was to eat when he was half asleep like this, he mused.

Donnan opened his mouth, but it pasted together and he couldn't summon enough saliva to speak. He sighed, swallowed, and tried again, but could only manage one barely coherent word. "More..."

He sighed. That wasn't very grateful, was it? Wasn't very polite... He could barely summon up the energy to come up with more. He swallowed again, sighed, tried to open his eyes, failed... And managed just one more word, "please..."

He then lay back, allowing his back to relax in the dirt so he could feel every muscle and bone ache sensationally. He really needed to relax more, he thought confusedly. He was really tired, and was fighting to stay awake. He couldn't have more lovely berries if he fell asleep, he told himself. That would be bad. Yet he couldn't force himself to wake up any more either, and was stuck in the half waken stage.

The berries were turning to mush with the mixed sap, but they weren't slimey enough to just slip down the throat. Despite the fact that he seemed to be enjoying the mixture, she did not want to have to deal with choking on this day in particular. It was all cloudy and overcast. There had been some mention of rain in the forecast. None of which boded well for her having to perform Heimlach Maneuver. Eresai actually really enjoyed the rain washing over her body; she even enjoyed running around and dancing to the rhythm of the skies, but she could not perform anything of absolute consequence where another human was involved and not feel too distracted.

Her eye twitched as his demand for more, but she proceeded to let them rush down his throat. At least he was longer desperate to get as far away as possible from her person. It wasn't like she was carrying the plague or anything. Well, she supposed that could be possible if one were to squint. Knowing the places she had been and the things she had done...it was enough to make the skin crawl. Actually, come to think of it, she should really hate the sand. Her eyes glanced down nervously at the ground. On a trip to Egypt, she had become trapped in sinking sand only to be rescued by a nearby root. Still...ever since then her and sand just did not mix. How could she have possibly forgotten that one? Great...now she was going to have to start watching her step again.

The last of the mixture went down his throat, and her spirits were considerably uplifted as he whispered the word of thanks. It was kinda nice doing this just because she could and not because she was being paid to be nice. Perhaps, this was how normal people all the time after committing a good deed. It sort of felt like she should raise her chin a bit, but she didn't. Instead, she stood up and tossed the leaf, before walking a ways into the forest to grab some of the leaves again and several different nuts from the various trees. Her steps once again returned her to the charge. Folding herself to the ground, she pulled a long dagger from the lining of her suit top. Into the leaves, she grated the nuts into very fine particles before starting the process of feeding him again.

The nuts were of more substance and would help rebuild stamina quicker. The fruit was a nice treat, but these should give him enough pep to try sitting up again on his own. Often, they were one of the sole foods she took with her on missions, because they lasted no matter what and were hard to grow stale. Muhaha, the perfect little food. Try and beat that darn food processing companies. "Feeling better sunshine?" Her words were mere murmurs, that didn't really expect an answer, but she felt better for asking all the same.

Donnan felt something dry in his mouth now, nowhere near as tasty as the berries had been. He sighed a little at the difference in taste but ate the new food nonetheless, noticing how the safe feeling remained. He licked his lips a little. The nuts made him feel thirsty, and it seemed as though no amount of liquid would ever quench the dryness in his mouth right now.

"Feeling better now, sunshine?"

Donnan frowned. He hadn't felt poorly before. He sighed, trying to uncloud his fuzzy brain. He could barely remember what had happened. Something to do with water... Somehow it didn't seem terribly important right now. That voice, though... That seemed important. It seemed to him that there was nothing more important, in fact. That voice brought him food. Food meant life. Life meant safety. It was that simple right now. And it seemed to him that he should answer the voice.

"Feel good..." he said, his voice sounding faint and distant in his ears, the tone weak and parchment dry.

He sighed, and then, using up what energy he could, he managed to force his eyes to open. He blinked up at the sky, which was bright for all that it was overcast. Above him was a woman. He hadn't seen her before... No, that wasn't right. He'd seen her before. In the water. The memory of that morning's activities returned, although it was more like watching a television screen than remembering. An out of body experience, he was pretty sure it was called. That sounded about right.

"Hi," Donnan whispered, and then, because he couldn't come up with anything else, "I'm Donnan... Do you have water?"

Okay, it wasn't necessarily a logical sequence of words, but it made sense in his mind, in any case. You always introduced yourself first. He'd said thank you earlier. And he needed water, because water was life, even more than food was. She might not think he was very polite, but he hadn't been raised to be polite. He'd been raised to survive, and he was doing a rather poor job of that lately. Donnan sighed, closing his eyes again. It hurt to keep them open.

And then, from no where, more words came from his mouth. Just two more words. It was all he had in him, for now. "I'm sorry."

The lips she was feeding life seemed to be chapped and the tongue with in that was greedily taking in the offered food seemed to be having issues adjusting to the drier coating of the nuts instead of the juice that flowed from the berries. Where could she find water that wasn’t contaminated with salt? Her eyes briefly drifted to that of the lake. The salinity content would not be nearly as high as that of the ocean, but it would still be enough to make the stomach churn.

However, water did seem to be of his chief concern. For once, the boy seemed to actually be speaking to her and not demanding she take her leave or find him something. According to him, he even felt good, though she found herself doubting that. Something had obviously occurred to make him feel as weak as he had within the water’s depths. Plus, his voice was cracked and dry as she was sure hers was after long hours in a desert. His body was like that of the sandy dunes at the moment, and he needed water. Immediately.

Taking pity on him with a smile, she tried to shrug off the name he had given her. In polite society Eresai should have given her name in return, but this did not feel like the time or place. In fact, she tried to keep her name from becoming public property as often as possible. For now, she would just wait him out and see if he even noticed that no name had been given in return. He seemed close to the brink of death anyway. Who ever remembered the moments when they felt like she was sure he did?

“Hello Donan…and no I don’t.” Her teeth bit gently down on their mistresses lip in worry. There was nothing around but the lake, unless, of course, the lake was being fed by tiny streams. The forest where her cottage was located was filled with tiny streams that seemed to go nowhere, but what if instead of nowhere they actually led back to the lake? Oh a moment of brilliance filled her mind as she began to wrap the leave just so in a manner that held them firmly together in a bowl of sorts. Oh how she mentally blessed her agent mindset. It was always on the guy and thinking of new ways to survive.

Without so much as a word, her body sprang up from the ground and sprinted through the sand till it became brushy with trees and plants. Continuing to hop about through the marshy land, Eresai stumbled through a particularly nasty set of bushes to the sound of running water. Skidding to her knees, she scooped the water up into the bowl and rushed back to her charge. Earlier she had ignored his claim at apology but as her hand dipped the water into his throat, she felt the need to acknowledge it. “It’s alright. We all have our off days.”

Donnan took the water silently, greedily, wishing there was more. His mind raced, capitulating on that one thought. He needed more water, more food, more sleep. Hogwarts... He needed to get back to Hogwarts. It was the only place that had ever provided his core needs for him; food, clothing, shelter... Sometimes he felt the overwhelming need to escape the school, but that was only his restless and wild nature, used to more freedom than he had. He wasn't used to having people tell him what to do and where to be, and it was natural for him to rebel against that, to some extent. It was probably why he'd swam so far away from the shore that day, because in hindsight, he knew that he hadn't really lost track as much as he'd have liked to pretend.

For all his problems with it, though, Hogwarts was the only real home he'd ever had. Now, with his feelings of insecurity and the overwhelming fear that was coursing through his body, all he wanted was to go back, back to where he knew it was safe for him. He wanted to go home more than he'd ever wanted anything in his life.

First he needed to convince his caretaker that he could get back there. Not swim, surely. He even realized how dangerous that would be. He could walk, though. He'd walked farther than this, without a cane, back when he'd first injured it. He'd been sick then, too, raged with pain induced fever and infections running through his blood stream. He'd had nobody to comfort him then, to feed him water and berries and nuts... Gratification for what the woman had done overwhelmed Donnan for a moment, but he pushed it away. He couldn't afford to allow his emotions to reach him that closely. He didn't need her to help him. In fact, he didn't want her to. It was too close to being parented, and if Donnan thought that way, he might begin to long for what he could not have. Such thoughts would only harm him in the end. He was a solid figure, he reminded himself. He was nearly thirteen, and he certainly didn't need help from anyone else to get by.

Donnan opened his eyes and pushed himself into a sitting position, rubbing tiredly at his eyes as they adjusted to the bright light even as he fought away the wave of dizziness that had overcome him. A moment later, when he was used to the feeling, he rose shakily to his feet, swaying slightly but basically alright. At least, that was what he told himself. Alright enough to get back to school, and up to his dorm rooms... He judged the distance around the lake with his eyes, warily. He might have to rest in between, but he'd get there in one piece.

"Thank you," he managed dryly to the woman, his voice formal, "I'm very grateful... I'm going back to school now."

He steeled himself for the effort, turning to head back to the castle, his inwards strength guiding him more strongly than any beacon. His survival instincts were on in full blow. He had to get back to the school before anyone realized he was missing, he thought to himself. Leaving the school grounds was against the rules- he couldn't get kicked out. He had no guardian to excuse his trip, or to pay the school off. One mistake and he would be out on his face... Not to mention the dangers that would evolve if he were out here at night, even if he didn't get in trouble at school. He had to get back before the sun set, regardless...

Sheesh, the kid could gurgle water like it was nobody's business. Seriously, Eresai wasn't sure she had ever seen anybody take in so much water in such a short period of time without ending up in a fit of coughing that the entire world could hear. If the time had felt right, she would have cautioned him not to charge so much liquid to his system just yet. He needed to go slowly, otherwise he would be dealing with an upset stomach very quickly. As it was, there felt to be something rude about acknowledging this, when he had other issues to deal with.

It was nice though that his frail body seemed capable of sitting up on its own. Honestly, Eresai wasn't sure if she would have helped with that part of this little dogooder mission. This was her at an extremely helpful, cordial level. Most times there was no touching unless it was to deliver the final death blow. Odd that this was how she would watch the young man and think, but her body was screaming out against this abuse. Abuse was exactly what this was, for her hands were beginning to itch with the need to knock him unconscious and run in hopes of fogrgetting this. If it ever got out how helpful she had just been...her mind shuddered at the thought.

The idea of sand squishing between her toes before diving straight into the lake for a swim back across felt magical. There was nothing more she wanted right then. The boy seemed intent on standing and walking away by himself, which was much more than she had been hoping for. Her fingers touched at her forehead in a mock salute, before her heels turned to charge away. His heavy breathing and bare flicker of an eye, however, continued to play in her thoughts. Could she really be this cruel? It was one thing for her to run off into the wilderness injured, another for somebody without the proper training and the sun seemed to be sinking quite low...

Her teeth chewed at her lip as she turned back and let her body heave with a sigh. "Wait up kid, you sure you want to do this?" Even with her help, they wouldn't make it back to the castle by nightfall. There would be no stopping the need to either continue through the dark or camp out beneath some tree. The latter was her preference as she truly enjoyed being solitary in the outdoors - no confines. Such bliss. He, however, did not look like the type to enjoy such a thing and definitely not the type to know off hand how to make a steady fire without any flint. Then again, he may not even know how to with flint...he definitely needed her here.

Donnan turned back as the woman hailed him. Was he sure about this? No, of course not. He was scared almost to death of the dark, knowing that it had brought nothing but horror to him at Knockturn Alley, and the chances of it bringing anything better in the woods was slim to none... Still, he had imposed enough on her. She had definitely done her good deed for the day, getting him out of the water. There was no need for her to hang around, nothing she could prove by it.

Still, it seemed like it would be kind of rude to say that out loud, even if it was the way he was feeling. It would be better, he mused, to go with a more subtle approach, giving her a more than obvious way out without sounding like an ass at the same time.

"No, I'm not sure," he replied honestly, "but I have to get back to school, one way or another. It's not like I really have a lot of options right now... I've walked farther in worse conditions."

Well, perhaps not physically worse conditions, he added silently. When he was in bad shape physically, he usually knew enough not to go outside at all. Emotionally, though... He'd been worse. Much worse. Saying that out loud would be like playing the pity card, though, so he kept his mouth shut.

Swallowing, he said one last thing to her, he one thing that would give her the obvious out, "You have to get home, too. Before dark, preferably. There's nothing better that can be done for me, I'll get to school eventually. I've always managed. Better if you at least manage to get home quickly."

Eresai had kept her responses to a bare minimum throughout his little play of emotions. Apparently her questioning him of his well being did not set well in his mind. She had, of course, had doubts as to whether he was up to it or not but had chosen not to voice them. He, however, seemed to have no qualms with owning up to the circumstances he had placed them both in. It was refreshing to see a boy of such superior moral strength in the face of gloom times.

Her mind was already racing with all the possibilities this boy had. She had started her covert ops as a child only due to her situation, but he was standing before her with all kinds of potential. Sure, there was the whole loss of a leg thing, but she had been able to see past that from the start. Besides, a disability such as that would really only aid in this little venture. Less people would look upon him and automatically be suspicious. A little rough around the edges in his survival training though. That is, if his darting eyes and raised octave were any indication at the mention of walking the path to the castle alone. It was sweet all the same that he wanted her to take care of herself first.

Stretching like a well-fed kitten, Eresai tossed him a grin. "Home? Please. This place is less of a home for me than the streets I started on." Her eyes had rolled with her choice of words. Complete truth, though. Despite how much she had hated herself for living in the moment on the streets or in the orphanage, it was where she had started.

Tapping him lightly on the shoulder, a smile was thrown his way as her steps led the way into the forest. All the while her hands began grabbing at sticks and loose brush that would work well for a flame. There was a small clearing beneath several trees that allowed for the perfect place. Pushing the rubble together into a fire post, she reached for the dagger in her suit and tilted it toward the swiftly waning sun. The reflection of the light was enough for a light smoking only to be increased by the rubbing of sticks and a large flat stone she had found. Before long, a small flicker of life appeared along with her triumphant grin.

"You started on the streets, too?" Donnan asked, intrigued, before he could help himself. He winced at the information he hadn't really needed to divulge. Better, he knew, to keep his secrets than to give others a weapon to use against him. Then again, it wasn't really a sore spot with him. Not like it had once been. Now it was just a fact, as much as his crippled leg and his poverty. They were just the way things were.

He followed her into the woods, watching dejectedly as she began to get the supplies to build a fire. So, they would be camping out, he thought with some trepidation. Still, he figured, now helping her in her pursuit of dry sticks that would burn easily, it was better that he was camping out with company than moving forward without.

"Incendio?" he asked her, eyebrows raised slightly, head cocked to the side, "or a muggle fire?"

He'd learned at some point in his schooling that sometimes magical fires attracted magical creatures... Usually rare ones, and he couldn't even remember in any of them were in Scotland, but he figured that she would know. He wasn't normally big on putting his trust into another person, on relying on them, but in this case... Well, she was the adult, wasn't she? He wasn't even thirteen yet, a tiny, prepubescent boy. He couldn't be expected to know everything...
