When you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back into you...

Spirits, specifically sentient spirits, are the remaining navis structure after a person's death that was strong enough to retain it's persona. New spirits tend to struggle just to maintain existence and it's quit common for their persona to be altered or suffer from pre-death memory loss due to the mind taking the back burner in precedence with keeping alive. Once able to maintain themselves however they may enjoy a life rife with practically everything out there trying to devour them whole or use 'em as supernatural battery packs.

Being a spirit does have it's perks however. Intangibility means walking through walls and laughing your head off silly as that idiot cub leaps through you and crashes into the tree behind you. Invisibility from humans also means it becomes really hard to break Coven Law so if you join the Spirit Commune so your enemies are greatly reduced. On top of that Spirits can become invisible from even the supernatural at the expense of being unable to influence the world in any way(depending on the spirit its Navis may still be possible to detect and no matter what spirit damaging effects can always harm them). Spirits not content with a semi-boring after-life and/or believes combat against spirit-damaging foes is inevitable may undergo a process called Gorging. To Gorge is the spirit equivalent of an Artum's assimilation. The difference is the Navis limit is breached not by ingesting spirits or raw matter but via live matter itself. The spirit will possess the living being and swiftly and visibly drain it's life, slowly becoming stronger in the process. Supernatural targets, while juicy, often have defenses and are typically avoided. The Spirit Commune advocates stealing from plant life, as it is abundant in energy and it is easy to stop Gorging before killing the plant, allowing it to grow and refresh it's life energy again.

By Gorging a spirit gains further control of itself, eventually allowing it manipulate itself, influence physical objects, hide their presence, and eventually even utilize hexes. Albeit difficult to survive, let alone become powerful, successfully doing so is often VERY rewarding.
