Konohagakure (木ノ葉隠れの里, Konohagakure no Sato; Literally meaning "Village Hidden by Tree Leaves"; also known as "Village Hidden in the Leaves" or "Hidden Leaf Village") is the hidden village of the Land of Fire. As one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries, Konohagakure has a Kage as its leader known as the Hokage. On a mountain overlooking the village from the north exists the Hokage Monument.

Sunagakure (砂隠れの里, Sunagakure no Sato; Literally meaning "Village Hidden by Sand" is the hidden village of the Land of Wind. As one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries, Sunagakure has a Kage as its leader known as the Kazekage, who resides in a spherical structure in the centre of the village. Sunagakure was founded by the First Kazekage, Hotaru, who gathered the desert-dwelling shinobi under his control with his overwhelming power and finalized his power by erecting the village in his image.

Missing-nin (抜け忍, nukenin; English TV "Rogue Ninja"; Literally meaning "runaway shinobi") are ninja who left their village without the intention of returning and severing ties with the said village, often because they have committed criminal acts or to pursue other personal gains. The ninja village that they are from will often try to track them down and eliminate them. However, not all nomadic shinobi are missing-nin.
