----------------

On February 14th, 2067, the world received news from top polar scientists that a meteor would hit the polar ice caps, shattering them and drowning the planet. For ten years, humanity rushed to find a way to save the planet. Coming up short, there were two solutions: find a new planet, or move humanity upwards to avoid the flood. Those that fleed the planet in search of a new home were called Pioneers, and left the planet in large space ships called Arks. The rest of humankind were forced to find a way to avoid the incoming flood.

A scientist by the name of Andor Rigel came up with three self-sustaining plans to save as much of humanity as possible: the satellite plan, the Platform plan, and the Floatilla plan. The Satellite plan involved space stations set up to follow the rotation of the globe, orbiting at a relative speed to the planet's spin consistently as to not crash into one another. The Platform plan, the most prolific of the three, involved massive megacity-like platforms that would be raised 30 feet above estimated water levels after the melt of the ice caps. These would be sustained by their own climate control screens and systems. The third, the floatilla plan, involved creating floating islands. This third plan was thought never to have come to fruition due to the sudden death of Andor a couple months before the meteor's estimated time of arrival.

On June 12th, two weeks before the final platform was built, the meteor hit the ice caps. This was a whole month before the estimated time of arrival, and 3/4ths of the population of Earth would be wiped out. The day would be known to many as the Day of Noah, as people fleed to the fourty platforms and twenty-thousand shuttles to the satellite stations located across the planet.

Around fourty years have passed since that day, and the climate has finally settled on the planet. While the satellites have stagnated and continued operations the same since Day 1, the platforms expanded, creating roads and megabridges connecting them all together across the globe to establish trade. The planet, although flooded, had survived and was once again thriving in a new form.

However, there is something festering beneath the surface of the post-apocalyptic utopia of the platforms. People seem to be dying left and right. The biggest problem is the phenomena that nobody recognizes the corpses. It's as if they were stricken off the records and removed from the memories of the people; however, their bodily possessions indicate they did live nearby. People began to call these corpses "husks."

On October 23rd, 2098, the Stonecreek Mall in Section 7, the shopping section on Platform 8, suddenly went dead, filled entirely with husks. About two hundred husks were found inside the mall. Panic began to strike the citizens of Platform 8. People tried to schedule a transfer to another platform, attempting to escape from what they believed to be an unknown threat.

The panic caused the local government to react. With the help of the Mayor, they established Horizon, a company devoted entirely to researching the Husk phenomena and developing a way to combat it. Due to its nature, the people working in the company keep no contact with the outside world, living in apartments located near the base floors of the giant skyscraper. People began to notice only government officials entering and leaving the building. Nobody else went in or came out.

After ten years, the husks seemingly disappeared from the eyes of the citizens, and everything seemed to return to normal. Little did they know that the problem was just as bad as it was on that 23rd of October...

It is September 2nd, 2110, and the first day of school for Ordon High School in Section 18. The school had been finished during the summer, and everyone, including the staff, is new. You are a teacher, student, or faculty member of this school. Regardless of your position, you will be dragged into the mystery of the Husks against your own will. And the mystery of the husks goes much deeper than it initially appears...

Welcome to Platform 8!

Hello, and welcome to Platform 8, the biggest and most prominent platform in the network! We pride ourselves in being the largest and most successful platform to date. Platform 8 started out estimated to be the size of what used to be the city of New York but has since expanded to the estimated size of what was once the state of New Jersey. The best part is...we're still expanding, and we're looking for more citizens to make the best platform even better!

Platform 8 is divided into 20 sections, each with its own purpose. Section One is devoted to our trade and commerce with other platforms. Before it was only used for storage and access to the platform, Mr. Antony Williams decided it would be the perfect hub for trade relations. To this date, Mr. Williams is the second most successful person on the planet, shortly behind Anto J'zalli, creator of the Web that spans the globe and connects all our platforms together.

Sections two through four are designated for natural land. Section 2 is our farmland where all food that isn't made through matter converters is grown and harvested. Section 3 is the wildlife refuge, where we keep the surviving species for repopulation should we figure out how to fix our planet to the way it once was. Section 4 is our designated park, perfect for hiking or spending the weekend in relaxation.

Section Five, our technical center, is where all our maintenance systems are located. It's thanks to the people here that we are safely suspended above the dangerous waters and kept in safe weather conditions should they take a turn for the worse. The head of staff at Section Five, Jeremy West, has been looking for ways to improve on our system so that we may emulate the weather of the seasons year round.

Sections Six, Eight, Twelve, Fourteen, and Eighteen are all residential and school districts. It is here that we foster growth for the next generations of Platform 8 and keep our people comfortable and happy. Each area has a different focus: Section Six is housing for our maintenance and mechanical staff. Section Eight is housing for our many Section 7 workers. Sections Twelve, Fourteen and Eighteen have differing levels of schooling as well as housing for families.

Section Seven is our commercial shopping sector. You can literally buy just about anything in this section: from clothes to security drones, Section Seven will have anything and everything you could ever want. Filled with friendly employees at every shop, Section Seven is considered the biggest shopping sector in the forty platforms, a title we're incredibly proud of.

Sections Nine through Eleven are reserved for our corporate offices. Section Ten, nicknamed the Horizon Section, is where our local government offices are located and the famous Horizon building where most of our safety and defense research takes place. We strive to make Platform 8 not only the best but the safest platform on the planet.

Section Thirteen is our technologies department, the birthplace of the Mag Rail. It is here that we create the newest and most advanced technologies to make your life easier. Drones, House LI's, Matter converters, and many other new devices are created and improved here.

On the subject of the Mag Rail, it is the fastest, most reliable method of public transit across the platform. Topping at 150 miles per hour, the Mag Rail utilizes AntiGrav lifts and propels itself using a single, poweful magnetic rail. The transit system has many trams that run throughout the entire platform, carrying over 20,000 people per every 2 hours on average.

Section Fifteen is dubbed the Workshop. Here all the repairs are done on our maintenance equipment as well as organization for work on the entire platform. From construction crews to plumbers, this section is the grease that keeps the wheels of our platform spinning!

Sections Seventeen and Nineteen are our recreation sectors. Section Seventeen hosts a ton of natural and sport-like activites, from Gravball stadiums to ski resorts. It is home of our Platform's gravball team, the Eights, who are currently undefeated this season. Go Eights! Section Nineteen is home to our amusement and big entertainment, such as movie theaters and studios and amusement parks. If you are looking for fun vacation activities, this is the section to go to!

Section Twenty is considered one of our most important sections. Jutting out from the rest of the platform, Section Twenty houses the shuttles that transport food and supplies to our Station friends up in space. They depend on us and other platforms to provide for them while they themselves do high-end research and spatial communications with the people who left around sixty years ago on the Arks.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Platform 8 and consider becoming a citizen of our great platform!

As if a switch had been flipped, nearby pale children turned and grabbed the people in David's group, including Tobias. Their body heat seemed normal, but they still had no reaction to outside stimuli. They would drag the group over to the gym forcibly, their strength seemingly unreal.

----------------

Walking into the Gym, Michael (and those that followed him) would appear up on a balcony. On opposite sides of the gym were bleachers that streched out to the ground level. A staircase separates both sides of bleachers straight down the middle. In the center of the gym was a makeshift throne of fold-up chairs and tables. On it sat a bored looking girl, tapping her foot on the table as she stared at what looked to be many pale students making a human pyramid. The rest of them were gathered around the throne and the pyramid, standing still and staring off blankly into space.

For whatever reason, Michael seemed completely unfazed by the entire scene, sighing deeply and shaking his head. "Of course. A throne. How original. Next she's going to start calling them subjects and having them bring her gifts," he muttered.

Michael turned to Caroline before he continued in. "I wouldn't bother trying to snap her out of it. She won't respond. You'd be better off asking a brick wall to move." He then turned around, and continued forward, heading down the bleacher stairwell onto the gym floor. "Now let's go say 'hi' to this wonderful girl down there. She should know better than to put chairs on top of tables."

Evan began to follow Michael, oddly silent. If one looked closely enough, they'd be able to notice how terrified he truly was. But that didn't seem to matter. His ego apparently wouldn't let him be shown up by a boy who, minutes ago, was one of the most timid people he had ever known.

"GET OFF ME!" Emeris had tried dozens of more colorful exclamations as the pale students began dragging him, the two students, Mr. Webster and Mr. Tobias to the gym, but nothing registered and after several seconds of yelling at them he had backed down to a repetition of the basic phrase. After saying it 2 more times, Emeris swung his right hand out of his chalk bag, threw the chalk into the eyes of the students, and then twisted his body in a tight spin, putting burst force in his arms and trying to bring them around faster than his torso in order to break free of the intense clutch as the students' eyes stung - but the grasp did not weaken and he nearly displaced his arm in the attempt. The students, with chalk all over their faces, were not fazed but held tight and continued their drag, up to the point at which they came upon the doors to the gym, where the other 4 students he had seen were talking, except they were dragged in after Michael had opened the doors wide.

Inside, Emeris was surprised by the scene before him and his trepidation only increased. "Now let's go say 'hi' to this wonderful girl down there. She should know better than to put chairs on top of tables." It was put simply and with a bit of humor, and was certainly going to lead them all into hell...but Emeris didn't argue (not like he could...this grip was unresisting). This time Emeris pulled his body upwards to get his grappled hands down to pull out a pocket knife about 2 inches long. "I hope she has an explanation for screwing up my day and my arm." (thankfully it wasn't hurt but it did sting)

Elene stared at the scene on the gym floor in puzzlement. Michael's words puzzled her further.

"Throne? Subjects? ... Wha?" Mumbling and stumbling slightly she continues to follow Michael and company. Again, she twists the small silver ring on her little finger- but then pauses. Instead, Elene cracked and wiggled her fingers. "Say hi? Alright."

Caroline had followed Michael.

David did whatever David did, being dragged around by pale kids, if that was the case.

As Michael headed down the steps, the group of zombies that were dragging the others walked into the gym, pulling their captives down to the ground level. They would pass right by Michael and the others on the way down the steps. Suddenly Evan dropped to the floor, pointing shakily in front of him. Sitting at the foot of the girl's throne was the dead body of a student. Michael's gaze shifted over, and suddenly his face turned to that of pure, unadulterated anger. He glared intensely at the girl. "So she's already shed blood. Guess the gloves are coming off." He pulls out a smart phone, presses a few buttons, and then stashes it back in his pocket.

Michael and the others finally reach the bottom, following the dragged captives closely. As they moved through the zombies who crowded around mindlessly parted away, creating a path. The girl on the throne was handed an apple by a janitor zombie. She took a bite out of it, tossed it up into the air once, and then hurled it at the pyramid. The zombie lost balance, causing the entire thing to collapse. She cackled in her seat, kicking her feet in glee. "Too fun! This power is too much fun! I didn't think it'd be this much fun to mess around with humans!"

The group of captives and investigators finally made it to the center of the room. The zombies stopped before the throne, not letting go. "Yay! My meal has arrived! And ooh, looks like we've got some extras! Here to observe your Goddess as she rises to power?" she asked, moving to lie sideways on her chair.

Michael shook his head, glaring intensely at the girl. "Let these people go. I'm only going to give you one warning."

The girl sat up in her seat, stared at Michael for a few seconds in disbelief, and then once more cackled and kicked in her seat. "That's rich! You, a single group of ragtag students, think you have what it takes to stop a goddess? I've got an entire army of loyal subjects willing to do my bidding!"

Michael snorted. "Your subjects aren't loyal. They're just mind-controlled and drained of all thought. That's not loyalty, that's indoctrination."

The girl stamped her feet, standing up from her chair. "You're pretty mouthy for a mortal. I'm going to have to prove why I, Maddie Jacobs, am the rightful ruler of this planet!"

Maddie held up her arm grinning victoriously. Black, shadowy tendrils shot out of her body, writhing and pulsing rhythmically. A single tendril would shoot out in the direction of each non-indoctrinated student and teacher, burying itself in the center of its target's chest. Once the tentacle was burrowed, its targets would find their motor functions below their neck suddenly frozen, unable to move their body voluntarily. Michael's eyes widened. "Don't do this-"

"Silence you miserable piece of shit! You're lucky you're going to feed me your existence so I can grow stronger," Maddie screamed. "Now then, let's see who's the least tastiest of the group..."

Maddie surveyed the group, staring at each individual person as if measuring a meal. After about a couple minutes, she finally clapped her hands together. "Alright, I want that boy..." She pointed to Evan. "...and those two..." She pointed to the two other students that had stayed with David. "...for my first course. The three of them together are less than the next smallest soul in here." She rubbed her hands together as she grinned widely. "Let the feast begin!"

Suddenly Evan and the two students started screaming and shuddering in pain. Maddie drooled, moaning in ecstasy. "So delicious..." she squeaked.

The three students began to grow quiet, and after awhile suddenly went limp. After what seemed to be an eternity, the tendrils retracted from the feasted bodies. They fell to the ground, blood escaping from any orifice it could. Michael gazed in horror at the scene, then slowly turned his head towards Maddie, his rage building.

Emeris gazed in horror as the two students to either side of him screamed and howled in pain, their life seeming to be sucked away from them. After what seemed like a cold, horrible eternity, watching what could be happening to him any second now, the tendrils detached from the two to either side of him and the other kid and the students - what was left of them - dropped to the floor, a splatter resounding as blood spurted from their limp bodies.

Emeris couldn't help but look down at the tendril in his own body. Immediately he began contorting and writhing, trying to get his pocket knife within reach of a grappling hand or even around to slice at the tendril. He started kicking the students to either side, trying to stun them or make them stumble, but to no avail. Everything he tried seemed as futile as his last desperate attempt at freedom. He finally pulled away from his right arm at full reach with as much force he could muster and slammed his forehead into the student on his left. Still nothing, except his arm was bruised and his head was bleeding. All he could hear was laughing.

Elene studied the cackling girl on the throne, sometimes looking between Michael and Maddie. Slowly she started to twist her ring again while slightly moving behind Michael; to be out of sight some-what. But she barely moved an inch before Elene felt a sharp pain and a heaviness in her chest, ceasing her movement entirely. Her breathing became quickened, quietly.

As the students screamed Elene managed to calm herself; steadying her breaths and relaxing her muscles. Her half-lidded blue-green eyes never left Maddie for a moment- not even to look at the aftermath of the unfortunate students. Did she feel frightened? Angered? Only time would tell. One could even figure that her expression was masked; hidden from the world.

Maddie giggled as she watched the group's horrified reactions. "You truly can't comprehend this can you? That's alright, I'll make the next one nice and extra slow so you feel the life inching out of you bit by tasty bit." She licked her lips as she emphasized the last few words.

A wet smack hit her face as a wad of saliva trickled down her forehead. She roared, her eyes glowing red and tendrils flailing angrily from her body. "Who would dare defile their Goddess' holy visage?!" She scanned the group.

Michael chuckled, a bit of spittle dribbling down his chin, head tilted towards the ground. "You disgust me," he muttered.

Maddie growled, stamping her feet in frustration. Slowly she regained her composure. She shot an evil grin at Michael and rubbed her hands together in anticipation. "Well, boy, you've spurred my wrath. Feel free to cry and beg as much as you wish; I'll be sure to make this extra painful for you!" She lifted up her arm.

The whole gym goes silent for a few seconds. Michael showed no sign of pain or suffering. It seemed as if nothing was happening. Maddie's confident face is slowly churned by nervous confusion until it overtakes her. "What's going on? Why can't I eat you?!"

Michael glances up, chuckling until it crescendos into a full blown laughing fit. He suddenly moves his arm up, pointing at Maddie. "You're a joke. You're a disgusting joke. This will be almost too easy." He tears out the tentacle in his chest with little effort.

Maddie began to back away, retracting her tentacle away from him. "You...it can't be...you're a Forgotten!"

Michael brushed off the sleaves of his zip-up hoodie and cracked his neck. "That I am." He was about to say something else as his phone rings, interrupting him. He pulls it out and answers it. "It's me. She's in place. Are we ready to go...? Good. See you soon." He hung up, shoving the phone back in his pocket. "You're trapped, Dream Eater. There's nowhere to run."

Maddie backed up a few steps before suddenly regaining her confidence, gesturing towards the frozen students and faculty. "You can't do anything! I have all these minions and these living students held hostage! If you come after me then they die!"

Michael cracked his knuckles. "I warned most of them that they forfeit their lives when they walked in here. They're not cattle, and if they die then it's their fault for not following natural human instinct. As for the others...well, they're collateral damage if you do kill them. It's a pity, but your death is the most important thing right now."

Michael took a few steps forward, removing his large glasses and tossing them behind him. They shattered into particles of light, vanishing into thin air. His eyes darkened slightly, from a whitish icy-blue to a deep, glowing neon blue. He pulls a silver bullet casing out of his pocket, tossing it into the air above him.

"I remember those forgotten by the world; their souls live on in me."

The silver casing hits the floor of the gym and disappears in a manner similar to that of the pair of glasses Michael wore earlier. Michael's form shifts, his gray coat becomes pitch black and elongated, and a black skull without a jaw appears in the center of the blue star on the back. A long blade is slung around, sheathed on his back. His shoes shift to large steel-toed boots. His belt is dotted with large canisters that almost look like they could be small grenades for a grenade launcher. Holstered to his right side is a massive revolver that looks like it should be some sort of small explosives weapon. A blue flame erupts from his right eye, billowing outwards to his side. He pulls out the gun, aiming it straight at Maddie's head. "I got so lucky. You just evolved and you're new, so you're incredibly stupid. This'll be a walk in the park."

Michael hefted up his gun and fired. The sound was similar to that of a giant hammer hitting a metal stake, and the canister hit Maddie's side and exploded, taking a chunk out of her side. She cried out in pain as she bled, turning and absorbing the life of her hostages. However, this would be cut short as a louder shot roared across the room, breaking her tentacles from the source near her back. Glancing up, she noticed a small girl with an anti-tank rifle aiming at her.

The small white-haired girl did not look like a soldier, nor did she look like she should be strong enough to lift such a heavy rifle around. Yet she fired another shot off, ripping off Maddie's right arm. She ejected the empty shell, lining up another shot.

Michael holstered his gun, pulling out his blade. The hilt was very simple, with no guard. The blade, however, looked like it was littered with odd geometric symbols and shapes. Michael swung the blade forward, cutting the girl in half. She didn't get a chance to scream as her torso fell off her lower body.

As her torso hit the ground, the gray people around them returned to their normal color and passed out on the ground. The bodies that had been killed suddenly disintegrated into small light particles that seemed to float skyward, leaving behind a small glowing orb that floated a few feet above the ground. The people that had been slightly sapped by Maddie's tentacles seemed fine, if not a little drained and possibly in pain.

Michael shoved his hand into Maddie's torso and tore out her heart. He crushed it in his hand, creating a bloody mess that would suddenly disappear in an ashy disintegration. When his hand finally opened he held a small etherial skull that pulsed a purple aura every few seconds. He stared at it for a few seconds before shoving it in his long coat pockets. He pulled out his cell phone, pressed a few buttons, and spoke clearly into the speaker. "Target eliminated. Clear out before the MPs show up."

Michael then glanced up at the balcony. "Nice shot, Rin. Any longer and they probably would have died."

Rin, who had already packed up her rifle in a cello case, glanced offward, her half-lidded, uncaring expression unchanged. She glanced over to the others and pointed at them. "They're marked," she said quietly.

Michael paled, then turned around, staring at the remaining conscious people in the room. Above each of their heads was a glowing symbol. Michael tossed his arms up in the air in frustration. "Great. They're marked," he complained. "Just what I needed."

Rin hopped down from the balcony onto the gym floor gracefully. It seemed the cello case in her hand didn't hinder her in the slightest. "You're aware we're always in need of more Forgotten to help us out, especially with Horizon on the move. A three-way war is hard to fight when your numbers are the only ones dwindling."

Michael sighed as he gripped his forehead. "Alright, alright. I get it. Guess it's better that I get them than Cassandra." He lifted his head and turned to face the others, clearing his throat.

"Those of you that have been warned have no right to complain about what is now happening. You have been marked. The consequence of being marked is that tomorrow you will cease to exist from history. Just about everyone you know and love will have forgotten you. Your presence, your being, every single memory you shared with people will become fiction to everyone but yourself. I will give you three options: You can come with me, you can go as long as you promise never to involve yourself in this in any way possible, or I kill you right here."

Rin brought her index finger to her ear, then nodded. "Five minutes until the cover goes down Michael. Make it quick." She then made her way out of the gym.

Michael sheathed his blade. "Alright, we've got five minutes before your decision is final. Any questions?"

The packed actions sped before Emeris' eyes, sucking him into a world he never dreamed existed. His eyes seemed to come back to him as the 'demon' girl - for lack of a better word - was sliced cleanly in half by the boy named Michael, apparently a 'Forgotten'. The gunner, Rin, came down soon after, as the conversation between Michael and those on his phone finished, or rather Michael made his final statement: "Target Eliminated".

Not 5 seconds later, Rin told them all they were marked and Michael gave them a choice. Emeris could be shot down (or cut down) right now, he could wander away and never again think about what had happened, or he could join Michael and, presumably, become a 'Forgotten' whilst giving up any connection to the outside world. That got Emeris thinking for a split second and before he could stop himself, his mind questioned, "What family do you have? And since your parents were gone what friends did you keep?"

With that in mind, Emeris had to also ask himself, "You don't care and you haven't cared for 8 years. Why give up your life to get into this crazy three-sided war? But then again, why'd you end up in the gym? And why'd you pull out your knife?" It was as simple as that. Emeris hadn't cared about anything but climbing for 8 years but now he found himself interested in these forgotten and this war. It was simple. It was easy. It was truth.

"I'm not losing anything and you guys get a soldier; I'm in." He shrugged and trotted the few feet to stand beside Michael.

Elene shifted her eyes to Michael, expecting the worst for him as the gym fell silent. But as he began to laugh she blinked her eyes in a slight, surprised wince. As Michael shifted into an unbelievable figure Elene stared with a blank expression. What was going o-

With a sudden gasp the pain in her chest seemed to pierce through her very soul. Fortunately for Elene the connection was quickly severed, causing her to fall to her hands and knees gripping her chest tightly with wide eyes. She remained like this with her head down and her body shivering. Elene couldn't see the last bit of the fight but when it was all over she still hadn't moved, but instead listened to Michael and Rin's conversation about them... being marked? This was it. An opportunity. A- ... No... Ethan. Elene slowly raised her head to look at Michael as she began to open her mouth. So sorry... So sorry... The girl would not be able to hold back the words.

"I am in."

Michael glanced at the two newcomers as the marks slowly faded away. He gathered up the souls floating about the room, shoving them in the opposite pocket he had shoved the dark skull he had extracted from Maddie. "Alright, I guess I'll explain everything once we're at the fallback point. There's a lot you need to be brought up-to-date on." He turned to Rin, who had suddenly stopped on her way up the stairs and had her finger once again pressing against her ear.

Rin suddenly did a 180 and dashed down the steps. "Trouble. MPs are not alerted yet, but I think there was a leak. Horizon's deploying."

Michael paled. "What's their ETA?"

"Two minutes," Rin replied.

Michael spat out expletives until Rin shoved her hand on his mouth. "We don't have time for this," she stated calmly. Her facial expression still hadn't changed.

Michael nodded. "Right, right. I know I can take a group of them if need be, but I don't know if I'll be able to protect anyone. Let's go." He turned around, grabbing Elene and Emeris by their hands. "We're going. Hold on tight." The group suddenly started moving very fast up the steps until they reached the first level. where Michael made a beeline for the door. Rin cut in front and kicked open the doors wide enough that the entire group could run through with no problem.

When they got outside, there was an odd, purple-like film surrounding the school in the shape of a dome. As they left it faded away. Michael glanced at Rin as they moved, making sure he didn't loose her. After running through the streets for what seemed like five minutes they reached an average looking house in a normal neighborhood. In the front yard, a bespectacled man who looked to be in his late twenties with long brown hair was tending to the garden. He glanced up at the four, grinning warmly. "Congrats, Michael. That's a new record-"

"Inside. Now. Horizon." Michael stated firmly. He let go of the others, plodding up the steps to the front door behind Rin. Rin opened the door and the group walked in, the older man following behind.

Inside, the house looked pretty normal. The front room had a nice holovid screen, lazy boy chairs, and couches. Behind it was the kitchen, and to the left was a stairwell. Behind the stairwell was a door to the bathroom and a stairwell that led down to the basement. The house probably stood about four stories tall, as was per usual with most houses in the current neighborhood.

In the living room sat two others: a boy with spiky red hair (it was so red it almost seemed dyed) and crimson eyes who seemed to be frowning consistently and who looked like he should be a supervisor at a gym, and to his left lazed a girl in a grey pullover hoodie with large purple shades and cobalt blue hair. She seemed to be grinning as her large headphones blasted what sounded like some sort of techno into her ears while she lay back in the chair. They both looked to be in their early 20's.

The redhead stood up, shutting off the HV. "Gen Nines already? Man, Michael, we get all the luck! Need any help training 'em?"

Michael would only shrug, shutting the door behind the group. "Dunno yet. There's only two. Head to the basement. Horizon's on the prowl."

The girl sat up in her chair, kicking her feet. As Rin walked by, she pulled her in, cuddling her. Rin seemed pretty passive about the whole situation, not reacting too much as the other girl snuggled her close. "Aw, but Mikey! I wanted ta go out later!"

Michael sighed, dragging a hand down his face. "Don't 'But Mikey' me. You know damn well what I'm going to say. Now stop sexually harassing Rin and head downstairs with the others. I need to grab something to eat."

The large man would direct the others downstairs. In there was a meeting room with a large round table and many chairs. The four would take seats around the table. The redhead would lean back, resting his feet on the table as he twiddled his thumbs. It seemed he hated waiting around. Rin would take a seat near the front, next to the large chair that looked like it belonged to a leader of sorts. The brown haired man sat cheerily in the seat next to the redhead, grinning like he had no care in the world. The blue-haired girl flopped into the chair next to Rin, sighing as she shut off her headphones and slid them down to rest upon her neck.

After a couple minutes of waiting (and presumably after the newcomers took the seats across from the large chair), Michael came down with a plate of microwaved foods. He set the plate on the table, took a couple, then studied Elene and Emeris. Satisfied, he nodded, pulling out the black skull and souls and handing them to Rin. She grabbed them in opposite hands, stood up, and made her way to a metal door in the back of the room. She opened it and walked in.

Michael cleared his throat. "Alright, I believe that first we should get introductions out of the way. My name is Michael Straight, and I am the head of all Forgotten operations on Platform 8. To my left is Benjamin DeSoto, Generation 6, and Aaron Jameson, Generation 4. You've already met Rin, Generation 2, and the person seated to her right is Leya Greene, Generation 7. We are the current squad assigned to Section 18."

"What you saw back in that gym was what was considered a 'Dream Eater.' They don't just suck the lift out of people, they also go after their existence. That's how husks are made. When the Dream Eater dies, the husks it created will disintegrate, finishing the process of non-existence. That's where we come in. We're naturally immune to the feasting process because we lack our own existence. We are a paradox. Because we don't exist we cannot die of natural causes. Hence, we're technically immortal. Every four years, when the clock strikes 12 on the first of March on a leap year, we are again forgotten and our bodies reset. I am the second oldest here, age 34. Rin is 29. Aaron is 40. Ben is 26, and Leya is 24."

Rin returned, taking her seat. Michael reached into his shirt and pulled out a chain with a black skull on it. His body reverted to its original state. "To combat the Dream Eaters, we have made a Soul Contract. This contract will become more powerful over time and can have a variety of souls bound to it. When a contractor dies, the souls are released once more. If you think this is cruel, it's not. If we leave the souls lying around long enough they become malignant and create another Dream Eater by eating the soul in another person's body. So in this way we're not only saving the souls from damnation we're also partnered with them. We look after each other and keep each other safe."

Michael leaned back in his seat. "We're not only in a war against the Dream Eaters, we also have to deal with Horizon. Four years ago, the entire Generation 3 defected, killing off every Generation 8 Forgotten. They joined up with Horizon and are considered highly dangerous. Instead of binding souls from husks to their contracts, they bind souls from dead Soul Eaters instead. This makes them highly volatile and very dangerous. Unless a veteran is there with you running is the only option to deal with them. Now then...do you two have any questions you wish to ask us?"

Emeris had taken a seat on the floor, rather than in any seat, in between two chairs and leaned his arching back against one of the two. He wasn't looking at Michael when he was speaking - or anyone, for that matter - and digested all the information slowly, revolving each bit in his mind.

"Is this contract tangible, as in is there an object, like that thing, (he nods his head in the general direction of Michael's black skull) that we keep, or do we find a soul and recruit it with word and an intangible bond? And how many contracts can we have or how many parties can be in the contract - as in can we 'save' multiple souls with our contracts? Finally, Rin and you are very unique in regards to your powers. Is this because different souls grant different perks in their contract with you or is it the way you mold your contract?" When he finished, Emeris turned his piercing, nearly black, brown eyes on Michael, waiting for the answer.

Horizon? Aren't they supposed to b- Before she knew it Elene was 'gliding' out of the school with Michael and the other boy. Everything was going way too fast. When she had finally caught up with her senses Elene found herself and company in front of a house. Record? She gripped her arms tightly, trying to mask her shivering as she entered the house. Elene took a quick glance about the place before she was ushered into the basement. Gen Nines? Still holding herself with a tired yet slightly blank expression she sat herself down at the opposite end of the table. There, she listened.

Husks. Dream Eaters. Generations. Soul Eaters. Horizon. Contracts. Elene could not comprehend any of this. So she remained silent as she tightened her grip on her arms, keeping her blue-green gaze on Michael and listening to Emeris' questions.

Michael nodded at Emeris. "It's a combination of both, really. The object is something that you put 'a piece of your soul into.' It contains powerful memories and you have a great attachment to it. In my case, it's my brother's necklace he gave me on my thirteenth birthday. In Rin's, it's her mother's Cello. After picking out the object it is then bound permanently with three souls. These souls will become locked in place with the contract, becoming one entity. Afterwards they can be modified with additional souls to change the abilities significantly. These additional souls will not bind to your contract like the others, so modification will be pretty easy."

"On the topic of souls, there are many different types. I would like to list them all off, but I think it'd be best if you just read the Soul Forge's guide for that. I can, however, tell you that while there are many types a lot of them share similar 'slot' types. A slot type will define how a soul is used in a contract. There are three types of slots: Primary, Secondary, and Support. A Fire soul, a common elemental soul, is a universal slot type, so it can be placed in all three slots. However, combat souls, such as martial, magic, mind, and ranged, are unable to be put in a support slot but can be put in a primary and secondary slot. On the note of these slots, putting the Fire soul in the primary slot and a martial soul in the second would have a dramatically different effect than putting the martial soul in the primary slot and the fire soul in the secondary. As an example, the first might yield the results of a body of fire, while the second may give you gauntlets with fire-like attributes."

"And on the note of contracts, each contract is different. Even if the user binds the same souls into the same slots as his friend, the results would still differ. This is because no contract is the same. Each contract will manipulate what you get with souls bound into certain slots. But you'll get a more in-depth explanation when you visit the Soul Forge tomorrow."

"Any other questions?" Michael turns to Elene. "I know you are dying to ask questions. You've got the look of a deer lost in the headlights."

Elene blinked, easing the tight grip on her arms slightly. She began to speak- albeit a bit quietly.

"I don't understand any of this. Its a bit too much. All of this is completely unbelievable..." She silently exhales. "... I have so many questions. But I think I'll ask them when I start to see things for myself."

As she spoke Elene fiddled with the small silver ring on her tiny finger. But she pauses.

"-Although." While slowly recomposing herself she asks, "What is it that we do?"

"Fair enough," Michael responded. "There is plenty of time to have these questions answered over the next week while we train you. Any of us should be able to answer any questions you have."

"As for what we do...for the most part, we stop the Dream Eaters and gather their souls to empower the Soul Forge. The souls are cleansed and then added to a bank. But mostly we stop them because they ruin people's lives despite the fact most people will never know it. I've known a couple of people who were parents and lost their children and didn't loose their memories of them. It nearly broke them when people around them told them they never had said child. Loosing someone close and being told they don't exist is a terrible feeling, and nobody deserves it. That's why it's our mission to stop these beings from doing the same to others."

Michael clenched his fist. "The downside is that we can't be super heroes. We can't save everyone. Even if it means sacrificing a few lives to the very thing we fight against, we have to sit back and watch due to secrecy. We can't let the general public catch wind of this; if they do it'll cause mass hysteria, and everything will come undone. And that's why we make sure we put up a 'veil' of sorts around our target. Not only does it protect outsiders from catching wind of what we're doing, it also prevents the target from escaping. They cannot leave the range designated."

"Hence why I used the phone."
Michael pulled out the smart phone, and set it on the table. "You two will be issued these at the end of the week once your training is finished. This is the perfect way to keep in contact with other members, call for backup, or get in touch with our Operator, who you should be introduced to tomorrow as well."

Leya hums in her seat. "Nickie's pretty nice. She always makes me happy."

Michael shakes his head, dragging a hand down his face. "We're also trying to figure out where these things could possibly come from. There's a theory that this platform may not have been built as recently as people believe it was. Horizon could possibly have a few clues, but nobody's quite certain about that yet."

Michael folds his hands, setting them on the table. "Anyways, do you two have any other questions?"

Leith pondered what Michael had told him - about the contract, the souls, the forge, the Soul Eaters. And Horizon was mentioned a lot, but he still didn't know much about them. Emeris was itching to see this Soul Forge and to go into 'training', but the question had begun to nag at his mind.

"One more thing: why did Gen 3 kill all of Gen 8? Were the Gen 8 just the easiest targets or was it the digression of values or outlook from Gen 1 to Gen 8? Maybe it was a direct opposition of a member of each Gen? There must have been a reason - there's always a reason - otherwise they wouldn't have also gone to Horizon."

Elene nodded; satisfied with Michael's answer. Though, at a certain mention of husks she suddenly stops twisting the little ring. Blinking out of her thoughts she catches onto Emeris' question.

"Yeah, why did they kill them off?"

The moment Emeris asked the question, the others sitting at the table suddenly cringed. A loud crack broke the silence. Michael had pressed his fingers together so hard he had cracked the joints. Michael shook his hands out, muttering expletives. "Yeah, I thought you'd ask that question. Might as well give you a short history lesson then."

"Generations aren't necessarily determined by 4-year shifts. They're mostly within a year or two between each other. The other determining factor between generations is which group found them. In Gen 8's case, Gen 3's leader, Paul Roes, had found them. I trained Paul personally, as I had done up to the last Gen 4 member. After that point, everyone could split off into smaller groups and run ops as I saw fit."

"However, apparently Paul and the rest of the Gen 3's had some sort of secret pact. They would keep in contact and discuss plans and the like to get Paul in charge of ops. These meetings continued on until they finally attempted to assassinate me. The Gen 2 leader had caught wind of this and came to inform me. He was intercepted and slain on the spot, as were others who had caught wind shortly after his death. Eventually I caught wind from one of the Gen 8's who had been under their tutelage. I confronted Paul about this, was met with a challenge, and defeated him. I informed him that the Gen 3's were to step down and hand over their contracts. They escaped before they could be subdued by the others. After that I sent the Gen 8's over to a group in Section 8."

"A few months go by and everything seems pretty quiet. Then I caught wind that the Gen 3's had been spotted with Horizon drones, hunting us down and killing us. That was when we first started hearing that they were taking corrupt souls and binding them to their contracts."
Michael sighed deeply, folding his hands around his nose and bowing his head, eyes squeezed shut. "For the next few weeks after that there were reports of attacks from Gen 3's. They eventually gathered up a small squad and went around, scouring old bases and hideouts we had used for clues to our whereabouts. We had to move the main base immediately. Even I don't know where the Op set up shop. And I think we'll keep it that way until we figure out how to deal with Horizon."

"The actual incident took place a year ago. The Gen 8's were out training on the field on their first operation. They had cornered the Dream Eater and were about to make the kill when the Gen 3's caught them. It was a one-sided fight...all the Gen 8's, their overseer, and the Dream Eater all went missing. All of them were gone."

Michael stood up from his seat. "I must go contact the Op and set up a meeting between the group leads. I want to know if they've found any other Gen 9's. I think it'll be my turn to start training them again." He headed back up the steps, pulling out his phone and dialing a number.

The others seemed to relax as Michael left. Leya drummed her fingers across the table. "The guy may look like a kid compared to the rest of us...well, except for Rin, that is...but he takes losses hard. We're all one big family; we're all we've got. Nobody else can get too close or they tend to get burned, even if they have immunity to the effects of the Dream Eater. Unless you're Forgotten, you can't get involved too easily."

Ben grunted in agreement. "Tons of old family members of Forgotten have caused plenty of issues for us in the past. Our official take on this now is that we don't remember the person. It'll be difficult as fuck, but you've got to act like you have no clue who that person is like the rest of the world. You don't know your family members, and you definitely are not related in any manner. That's why once you get your contract tomorrow, you change your last name. It's a ceremonial thing."

Aaron chuckled. "Well, enough serious business for now. We'll have plenty of time for that tomorrow. Who wants dinner? I'm thinking waffles tonight."

The others seem to voice their agreement. Rin, however, remained silent, only raising her hand to show she agreed.

Aaron turned to the new members. "Ah, we've been introduced, but I do not believe you have been introduced to us. Michael tends to be all business when something like this happens. Don't worry, he'll warm up to you in time. He's just been on the edge about new members since the Gen 8 fiasco and all."

Emeris had been pondering since the 'history lesson'. As Emeris was thinking, he had pulled out his Saxe Knife from the sheath across his lower back and had been twirling it in his nimble fingers. Corrupt Souls huh... Emeris had thought Horizon just to be another group killing off Dream Eaters, but corrupt souls did not sound like they were killing Dream Eaters for the benefit of the rest of the world - it sounded more like they were harvesting the Dream Eaters, if Emeris was correct in assuming the pulsating, ethereal skull Michael had liberated from the Dream Eater was a 'corrupt soul'. Or did they even kill Soul Eaters? Maybe Soul Eaters didn't have corrupted souls - but Michael did say that corrupted souls is where Dream Eaters come from. In either case, it sounded like the corrupting of wandering souls and the creation of Dream Eaters was in Horizon's interest.

He had been thinking of many other things before his mind came back to the room, where the other group members were asking for an introduction. A small flourish put the Saxe Knife back in the sheath and he bowed to the others. "My name is Emeris Ayb-..." He faltered for just a moment, "Just Emeris." He thought of his parents as they were husks; they were soulless things, he now understood. Shells with no existence. And he hated the Soul Eaters for it... he had been lax and apathetic for 8 years but now he had a target. "And I'm not going to disappoint the Soul Eaters by running or changing flags. I'm here and I'll probably be here until I die."

Elene listened, even though some things went right over her head but she got the gist of it. Forgotten teamed up with Horizon- a company she thought until recently was the main reason for the thriving Platforms. In those days where she longboarded in the park there was a war going on and nobody knew. For yet another time the girl begins to twist her small ring before answering,

"Elene."

Aaron glanced over the two, grinning widely. "Ah! They spoke to me! The last few recruits Michael trained didn't like speaking and preferred to keep to themselves for the first few weeks! Not even a day in and we're already making progress!" He stood up from his seat and hurried up the stairs, humming happily to himself.

Ben glowered at the display. "Ugh. The housewife is at it again. Don't worry, you'll get used to it. He's much tougher than he looks."

Leya, who had since moved from her seat, rested her head on top of Ben's. "You may not realize it, but he's actually pretty powerful. We all are. Michael hand picked who he wanted in his own squad. You'll be staying with us for a majority of your training, so don't worry if you think you're gonna be in trouble with our enemies. We'll knock 'em senseless for ya."

Ben laughed in response. "Yeah, I remember my first day training with Boss. I didn't take him seriously since he looks your guys' age. He wiped the floor with me, told me to shape up, and then left me in a pile on the floor. It took me a week to start getting the hang of my contract, and even after that I was still nothin' to him."

Leya groaned. "I remember my first session against him. I swear that entire time I thought I had him on the ropes. A few days later I started noticing that he was toying with me. I got so mad that I started making bigger and bigger mistakes. Eventually I screwed up so bad that he threw me off the top of the house into the pond at our old base and he told me to cool my head off." She laughed, pointing at her hair. "So I did, and it's worked so far!"

Rin stood up from her seat, her contract wearing off. Her hair turned from its snow white shade to that of a coral pink. "I'm going to go practice. I'll be back later." She headed upstairs, carrying her large instrument case with her.

"There she goes again," Ben sighed. He cracked his knuckles. "She's the only one I know that hasn't opened up to anyone. She only seems to talk with Michael."

Leya laughed, hopping back in her own chair. "Speaking of talking, why don't you guys tell us a bit about yourselves? We're gonna be working together for awhile, so I guess this is the time to get to know each other before things start gettin' too serious."

Emeris screwed up his face and sat back. Now that the adrenaline was gone and he had made his bravado, he was out of things to say... they had asked him to get some 'ice-breaking' going but Emeris hadn't broken the ice with anyone in a loong time.

He looked at the ceiling a bit before saying, slowly, "Uhm...Well...Well I like climbing. You know, trees, walls, buildings, whatever; the wind in the high places has always been very calming and not many other people are willing to go as high as me, so it's easy to be alone. I, uh, noticed you guys seem to use guns so I'll tell you now I've never shot one and never really wanted to - I did, once upon a time, want to try archery but I never really got into it. I'm lazy like that. Actually...I was always lazy - and apathetic. I guess in that way I always wanted to go unnoticed, so I'm pretty good at being quiet when I want. I guess in curriculum I'm decent at reading and writing; fantasy books were always enjoyable and I used to always want to be in one of those books. Seemed like an awesome life. I even used to draw characters I thought up all the time and I wanted to write my own Fantasy book... But I'm not always a dreamer like that: I'm very good at physics and algebra, plus calculus isn't hard at all. And technology is a beautiful means to exist and survive - so I guess you could say my mind is a mind of two worlds." Emeris chuckles before continuing, "Don't ever try to make me remember anything, though. My memory, if anything, is my flaw and my weakness. I can hardly remember the names of my professors, much less acquaintances." A few seconds pass before he shrugs and sits back again, passing a glance ot Elene.

After Emeris finished speaking, both Ben and Leya glanced at each other and burst out laughing.

"Oh man, kid, you've got the wrong impression of us if you think we use guns. Those two just work better together when they do. But trust me, that ain't either of their strong suits. As a matter of fact, Rin's much scarier up close and personal."

Leya shuddered. "Never spar with Rin. She may not look it, but she can beat anyone here in an arm wrestling contest. She's the manliest person in Mikey's squad."

"Neither of us use guns. Aaron doesn't either. But..." Ben leaned over the table towards Emeris. "You can be the stuff of legends. If ya dump enough of your own self into your contract, you can rest assured you'll get somethin' awesome. Believe me, your fantasy books have nothin' over our reality.

Leya grinned, leaning forward in unison with Michael towards Emeris. "Trust me. This may be a tough life to live, but it has its perks. Your powers could be anything from weapons to magic to psychic abilities..."

They both leaned back, sighing. "Don't worry, I'm certain you won't disappoint." They then returned their attention to Elene.

Elene looks up from her ring and shifts her eyes to the faces staring at her. She swallows, clenching her hands into fists as her vision starts to blurr.

"I love to long-board. I am- ... was a freshman, at the new... school." Slumping over the table Elene quickly props her elbow on the surface of it, pushing against her forehead with a thumb and index finger. "I-... uh..." Images and sounds of the day's event began to catch up with her quickly, causing the pain in her chest she had felt during the fight to slowly creep up on her once more. Elene brings up her other arm for her hands to hold the sides of her head; her hair being weaved between her fingers. "... I really love long-boarding," she emphasized with her head lowered to shade her features. Elene let out a shuddering exhale. It might have been obvious that she's never felt this way before and didn't know how to handle it.

Emeris noticed the shudder and the reluctance to speak... it might have been stage fright but Emeris thought otherwise. Some of the others had screamed out during the fight, presumably because the Dream Eater was trying to heal using their existence, and Elene might have been one of the ones hit. Plus Emeris knew he was taking this VERY well. After all, he had no friends or family to lose and he had vengeance in his mind - why would he have a reason to be scared or hold back? Others, on the other hand, might not be the same. She might have had family or friends, might have had a reason to be doing things. And she was a freshman, filled with the hopes of the coming years. And she lost it all.

Emeris cursed himself for not thinking about his only other Gen 9 compatriot. He immediately stood and slowly walked to her side, putting his hand on her shoulder and trying to look at the eyes hiding behind the hair flowing down between the clasped hands. "Hey, what's wrong? If you're tired you should probably rest. I can easily admit that it has been a VERY long day - more so for some than others."

Leya giggled at Elene's display, trodding around and wrapping her arms around the girl. "Aw, you guys were almost husks weren't you? Don't worry, you'll get your energy back pretty quickly after you eat. After that, though, you may wanna head for bed. It'll be the last night you'll ever need to sleep."

Aaron then returned with a plate full of Belgian waffles. "Come and get 'em while they're hot! I brought butter, syrup, and jam for anyone that wants it."

Aaron did a double take, staring over in Elene's direction and sighing deeply. "She's got rebound, doesn't she?"

Ben nodded. "I think they were eaten a bit. They should be fine, right?"

Aaron shrugged. "We don't know how people will react. Those of us that were saved in the middle of being feasted upon ended up alright, but we have no knowledge that once we're marked we'll make a one hundred percent recovery from that sort of damage. The contract may be able to fill in the holes necessary. After all, it's nearly impossible to destroy a soul."

Elene didn't respond much to Leya's 'comforting' besides sitting back in her chair, slightly curling up as she grips at her own chest. The pain was suffocating. You're stronger than this... Come on... She hadn't even realized that conversation in the room began to fade away along with her vision. Slowly moving a hand Elene grips the little, silver ring on her tiny finger to turn it slowly a few times. The day's memories began to fade as she closed her eyes; thinking about those sunny days at the park with him. Elene regains herself quickly when she could feel the pain leaving her chest. Opening her eyes she blinks several times, glancing to Leya then to Emeris with an appreciative nod. Elene sits up and wears a small smile- the youthful shine in her blue-green eyes had returned.

"Do I smell waffles?"

Emeris back up just a bit when the waffles came into the room but he wasn't about to leave Elene's side. They were in this together, seeing as they were 2 in an entire generation. He saw her sit back and there was cringing in her movements, but eventually (Emeris didn't miss her ritual, which she had been doing a lot) Elene calmed down.

She looked at Leya and him, nodded to each in turn, and then smiled. That smile was happily accompanying the eyes he had first seen when she had been following Michael in the halls not so long ago. He couldn't help but smile back and hoped this wasn't a mask, hoped that she wouldn't spiral down into something he or someone else couldn't pull her out of. "Do I smell waffles?" That notion brought Emeris back to the world and he stepped further back as Aaron took a step forward. Noticing the look in his face, Emeris quickly explained, "It's not that I don't believe in your cooking - I haven't even had it before - it's just that I need something more simple right now. Would you guys happen to have apples?"
