Recruitment Seminar

What is Recruiting?

Recruiting is what is says, it is plain-and-simple, it’s the recruitment of nations to your region. You can recruit in a multitude of ways, the ways we will get to at the end of this seminar.

Why Should you Recruit?

Recruiting is an important aspect for bringing in new nations to the forums and your region, and can expand your regional population and make your region more noticeable. Even if you get no response, or a person doesn’t join your region after a recruitment message, the regions name can be sealed in their mind for later.

What would a region be without members? A region with a lack of members is a non-noticeable region, and recruitment can easily fix that by bringing in people to your region and increasing forum and game-site activity, making your region more noticeable.

So in short, recruitment can be claimed to be the backbone of a region.

How can you successfully recruit?

In order to recruit successfully, you should have a good idea of what makes your region special and sets it apart from others. Newcomers get twenty telegrams - an average number- and all of them have the potential to be regions for the newcomer. You need to have a message better than your opponents, or simply, have a message that shows what makes your region special and sets it apart from others. After this seminar, it would be great if everyone can brainstorm what makes your region special and sets it apart from others- is it a friendly crowd of people? Or the organization of the region? Or something different entirely? In order to successfully recruit you need to have a good idea of what sets your region apart and convey that into a message.

What comes after Recruiting?

Retention of newcomers, and Integration into your region, which will develop over time.

Recruitment Telegram Daemon- A Lesson from Europeia’s Admin and Veteran Recruiter

R3n Speaking

Before delving into the details for each system, we need to understand how recruitment telegrams are delivered. By recruitment telegrams we mean telegrams marked as "recruitment". Note that the following only apply to recruitment telegrams - ordinary or campaign telegrams are delivered differently.

As soon as a nation gets created, they are assigned three recruitment telegram queues: stamps, API, and manual. All recruitment telegrams added to one of these three queues, based on the method used to send them (more on that later). Telegrams remain in "queued" status until they are selected by the recruitment telegram daemon, to be explained in the following, and delivered to the nation. While in "queued" status, the telegrams have not yet been seen by the nation.

The recruitment telegram daemon delivers telegrams to the nation in intervals that increase geometrically: the first telegram is delivered 30 seconds after the nation is created; the second is delivered a minute after the first one; the third two minutes after the second one, and so on. In the first hour since its creation, a nation is delivered about 12 telegrams. It takes about a full day for the nation's inbox to be filled with recruitment telegrams. Note that recruitment telegrams delivered to nations with a full inbox result in earlier recruitment telegrams being dropped from the inbox.

The way the daemon selects which queued telegram to deliver is complex but important. First, the daemon selects one of the three queues, in a round-robin fashion: first the stamp queue, then the API queue, then the manual queue, then again the stamp queue, and so on (the queue that will go first is selected randomly). Second, the daemon randomly picks a telegram from within the selected queue, and delivers it to the nation.

There are two important observations to make here:

1) Even if you send a telegram to a new nation immediately after it is created, it may only be delivered to it after several hours. Remember, after you "send" the telegram, it gets queued, and it is only seen by the nation when the daemon delivers it.
2) The fewer telegrams in a queue, the more likely it is that they will be delivered early. Let's say the stamp queue has 5 telegrams, the API queue has 20 telegrams, and the manual queue has 2 telegrams. Then, the first six telegrams to be delivered (first 15 minutes) are guaranteed to include both the manual telegrams, and will also include two of the stamp ones, and two of the API ones. Telegrams 7-12 (first hour) are guaranteed to include the remaining three stamp telegrams, and will also include three more of the API ones. The remaining 15 API telegrams will be delivered as telegrams 13-27 (the last few are delivered on the second day).

Finally, we should clarify the following: It is important to try to send your telegrams as soon as possible after the new nation is created. Even though they are not guaranteed to be delivered early, at least they have a chance of being selected early by the daemon. If you send your telegram an hour after a nation is created, then it has missed about 4 chances to be selected by the daemon, and it will be delivered at best 13th. Also, at that point the delivery time intervals have expanded so much it risks being delayed till the second day.

What are the different ways to recruit?

Stamps

No rate limit (you can reach all new nations)
Zero sending time (telegrams are sent immediately when a nation is created)
No need for coding
No need for hosting
No manual effort
Monetary cost (1 US cent per telegram)
Congested queue

API

No monetary cost
No manual effort
Effort to achieve close to zero sending time (though with careful coding it is possible to achieve this)
Need for coding (a script to send the telegrams)
Need for hosting (a computer to run the script)
Rate limit (you can only send 1 recruitment telegram every three minutes, or about 480 telegrams per day)
Very congested queue

Manual

No monetary cost
No need for coding
No need for hosting
Almost free queue
No rate limit (there is the telegram spam limit, but you can still reach all new nations)
Manual effort
Effort to achieve close to zero sending time (though with a careful manual routine it is possible to achieve this)

There are three ways to recruit:

1. Manual: Slow, requires work, free, effective
2. API: faster than manual, slower than stamps, less effective than either, but also free and automated
3. Stamps: faster than either, less effective than manual, more effective than API, costs money

Stamps

Stamps are a game credit that can be purchased from the NationStates Store. Once stamps are purchased, they can be used to automatically send mass telegrams.

Everyone who has a nation can purchase stamps for their nation or to gift them to another nation (for storage and mass telgramming). Once stamps are purchased or gifted, you can not transfer them back! For $1 US dollar, you can purchase a total of 1,000 stamps and payments can be made by Paypal or Google Wallet. Stamps can be used to mass telegram every nation founded in a feeder region, every nation ejected to the Rejected Realms, etc. On average, it may take around 30,000 stamps per month ($30) to fully recruit every nation.

Donating stamps is very very important to mass telegramming using stamps because of the speed and unneeded work that comes with it. Here is the NationStates store: http://www.nationstates.net/page=store

Of course, it has its cons, such as a somewhat congested queue and a monetary cons.

Manual

A manual way of recruiting that requires more work than stamps, but are handy for regions that do not have the funds for constant stamp purchases. The most important thing to remember is that the nation you are recruiting from must reside in the region you are recruiting for! The age of your nation determines how fast your nation sends telegrams, so use the oldest nation you have to send these telegrams (but remember, this nation has to be in the region you are recruiting for). http://www.nationstates.net/page=faq#technical The Technical FAQ section explains how to send telegrams.

First, I would wholly recommend that you personalize your telegram a bit and add something about you, and what you like about your own region (this should be added onto your normal telegram that you use which we should create after we find out what makes your region special).

1. Copy and Paste your text in the Box
2. In the ‘To’ box, put in tag:template
3. Mark as Recruitment
4. Click Send
5. Copy and Paste your template code somewhere for yourself.

Once you have done these steps, you have created your first template for manual recruitment!

1. Copy and Paste your code into the text box for the telegram
2. For Maximum Efficiency, put in 8 newly founded or refounded nations in the text box for recipients with a comma separating them. (http://www.nationstates.net/page=activity/view=world/filter=founding Use the NationStates activity page to find newly created and refounded nations!)
3. You DO NOT need to mark this telegram as a recruitment telegram because you already did so when making the template!
Send the telegram and watch the delivery reports as they are sent to those eight regions! (A cool-down period will be needed after to prevent spam)

The last thing you need to do is respond to ANY questions a new nation may have for you about your region, and do so effectively and efficiently.

Once you do that, repeat the process!

API

The last way to recruit is API, and has the most congested queue of them all, and someone will have to code the script for usage, and host the script for usage (a computer to run the script). Don’t let that frighten you, API is fully automated after that. You can run it all day if you need to, just remember the limit of sending of one telegram per minute!

If you have any questions on this type of recruitment feel free to ask!

A Blend

You can, of course, blend all three together! An ideal recruitment system will do this, and will use all three to their advantage. Quite like this- stamps for sending to all new nations, an API Script running non-stop and sending recruitment telegrams every three minutes, and members sending recruitment telegrams whilst they have the chance. As they say, the more the merrier!

So yep, this is the whole Recruitment Seminar. If you have any questions for me to follow up on feel free to ask and I will gladly answer. I will leave this open for discussion on this and open more conversations for improving your already made (yay!) recruitment telegram!

Well, I think we first have to decide which systems we are going to use. Personally, I do not feel much for stamps and more for API and Manual.

For API, you need to know how to code. If you do know how to do that, even better. You also need to be able to host the script.

However, if you don't know how to do that, I would recommend manual recruitment and stamps. Personally, I have seen what stamps do, and think that it's better than API because it doesn't need scripting, and they are also fairly cheap.

For your region now, it may be best to start out on manual recruitment until someone can begin purchasing stamps in your region, so the population can grow. Usually, manual is less congested, has no scripting or hosting, and is free. That may be the way we want to take for now.

Meh, I prefer API because I don't think that there are over 480 new countries per day

So you do not believe that it is possible that 20 nations per hour are created?

Question: What makes us special from other regions?

BTW, I personally always had lots of success with a very simple text.

API does require scripting and hosting the said script. I, personally, don't know how to do that, but if one of you do know how to, than API could be the choice for you.

If you guys don't know how to script, I would use Manual or Stamps (if enough stamps are bought) or perhaps a mixture between the two. Simple text, eh? If it has been working for you, then we should probably continue it until we feel it isn't staying effective, at that point, I'm sure we can write up another (added some detail to the recruitment message) :)

Manual sounds like the most practical for the moment, but API sounds ideal.

I completely agree, and this has always been a general feeling of mine :P

If we all agree on manual recruitment for now, we can get started soon, but I'll wait to see if anyone else has any other comments.

Also for the sake of speed and trying to get to the top of the queue, you can go to the "the world" page and wait under "global happenings" until it says a new nation has been founded (not refounded; founded). All of these will inherently be fair game. They normally come within 5 minutes of each other. Then you can just paste the message up, customize it as necessary, and then mark it as a recruitment message and send it. Piece of cake and can normally be sent (for the queue of the daemon) within 30 seconds of the founding of the nation.
