This is utter BS! Apologies guys, I don't mean the posts here, rather the apparently escalating poor service from PB. As if it's not bad enough to shoot paying customers in the middle of the back, they then choke their bandwidth while everyone tries to recover their albums???? I'll repeat that I'm not a paying PB user and as such I would expect to be among the first to be shot. Evidently PB don't see it that way and are wildly taking pot shots at both paying and non paying customers. I could rant all night but it's not going to help anyone here. Regarding the last few posts, here is what I know or experienced.... Nuther, 24 hr ago I downloaded the last of my PB albums to hard drive. At that time album downloading was glitchy but worked with perseverance. Note that animated GIFs and movies are not included and must be grabbed one at a time. If the GIF or movie was clicked and given sufficient time to completely load it could then be grabbed via a Windows left mouse click "Save As". The glitchy album downloading? Ok, once you click your way into an album the download option appears on the right of the screen in the Actions area. PB, in it's infinite wisdom then greets you with one of those insanely annoying CAPTCHA windows to prove you are not an internet bot. WTF??? If you are already logged into your account why the need for the CAPTCHA insanity?? After the verification is where things got glitchy for me. At times it took several minutes before the "download ready" message appeared. At times it simply hung. Larger albums will take longer for PB to prep for download, 150+ pics for me. Based on all of this I'd suggest that if an album has maybe fewer than a dozen amages just grab 'em on a one at a time basis by loading each image in a new tab. Also, take note of Bill's earlier post regarding renaming a downloaded album zip file to reflect the album content, at the time of download. Will save leg work later. Rich, did the guy per chance mention how he tried to copy the album? I'm not sure what that actually means in pracise. May I ask you to please PM me a link to the post if you recall where you saw it. Thanks mate, I'm a curious critter by nature. Sweet, as far as I can tell all of my downloaded albums have the pics at the originally saved PB resolution, except a few. File size I can't confirm right now so some may have been compressed more than I intended. One thing I did find was I had several images that I uploaded that were larger than the 1024 pixel PB limit. I was unaware of the limit at the time and the images were resized by PB. Oh and PB Free - I like your way of thinking! Sooooo... I had hoped to find an easier solution for everyone to grab their albums and was quite confident I'd manage it. Unfortunately so far I have nudda. Over the last week or so I have installed and tested numerous Firefox add-ons that claimed to be able to capture full PB albums but none worked. I have no doubt that they worked at the time of their release but image hosting crews are quick to alter their coding to avoid mass downloads from these types of utilities. I thought I had it licked with DownThemAll but it actually only returned the smaller images seen in PB library windows. Keep the comms open and coming guys. Cheers, Michael. I grabbed all of mine on the extended 4th of July weekend. Everything is safe and sound. I left 'em up just in case they flip the switch back on. Everything from this point forward I put on flickr. Sorry, I'm not going to go back and edit my threads. Way too much work. If there's anything you got to see from me, send me a pm and I'll send em over. |

yeah... I echo the sentiments most have expressed so far... PB seems to have no more than a mere fraction of it's former speed (not that I'd ever say that it was ever fast). SO... after several failed attempts to copy entire albums, I found it was apparent that if I wanted to save all my images I would have to do so one pic at a time. In a way, for me, it was almost better that way. I was able to weed out all the out-of-focus and poorly composed ones. What I ended up with was a leaner collection of great photos, instead of a butt load of crappy ones with only some worth hanging onto. That said, it was very tedious and looong process to say the least. I have limited storage resources on my Windows 7 machine, so I just burned them all to disks. Took me several hours per day for 2 days, but I did the deed. I felt no need to leave anything on the PB site. I deleted all my albums once I was finished and closed my account. They sent me the obligatory "Oh my goodness, why are you leaving?" survey and I took that opportunity to tell them that their Ransomware ploy was a non-starter for me. My future plans are to purchase a multi-terabite external drive and to use that in order to never have this happen again. I will eventually utilize a new image hosting site but I will ALWAYS have my own copies in case this ever happens again. I was complacent in my belief that it was okay to rely on PB as the sole storage entity for my images. Lesson learned the hard way. Two things remains constant as time goes on... Nobody does anything for free when they make a buck off it ( AND ) Nobody will truly treat your stuff like it's their own forever. ....I look forward to reading other board members' opinions on other hosting sites as time goes on. I'll pick a new one based on them. |

When I shoot pictures I use a good DSLR camera and the picture size and quality are both set at the max. That does generate very large files. I move the pictures to my computer and delete any of those that have problems. The keepers all get edited, they are cropped, the contrast is enhanced and the sharpness is tweaked if necessary. When I save the edited pictures I decrease their size to fit my screen, which greatly reduces the file size. The unedited pictures are about 20 megabytes and the edited ones are 1.7 megabytes or less. The pictures that I post are 650 kilobytes or less. The edited pictures get saved in various folders on my hard drive. The original pictures eventually get burned on to DVD-ROMs and are erased from my hard drive. Once a week I back up all of my files to an external hard drive, those are cheap and if you leave it unplugged it is not likely to get wiped if you get ransomware. |

I finished replacing mine on Thursday, before PB had a chance to hijack them. I always kept the original on my computer, so just uploaded to imgur, and then edited my posts. Even so, it was a tedious, time consuming process. We'll see how imgur is going forward. There certainly don't seem to be an overabundance of ads or popups, not sure what their business model is. I may be in the same spot with them 6 months from now. Imgur seems easy to use, and navigate. I always resized my photos on PB after uploading, and I have that capability on Imgur. It generally is smooth and quick, although I have encountered times where the upload hangs up, and I have to start over. Perhaps there are high traffic times on the website from people leaving PB that overwhelms it. All in all, I would recommend it. |

Thanks Slider and everyone for this thread lot of great info. Imgur looks like the way to go for the garage rebuild. The organizing and archiving methods, have to be implemented as well for future problems. |

I just opened an Imgur account and I will spread my new pictures between that and Flickr. I expect that my Photobucket pictures will go dead sooner or later. I will edit my newer posts with links to sites that still work. I have started an Excel database with my latest pictures. The database includes embedded links to where the pictures are located on my computer and one column in the database has the date of the post. Since I can sort the database it would be easy to locate the pictures that I would need to upload to a different site. The database includes the current BB code for each picture, those would have to be replaced if a picture went dead. Doing a database for the thousand or more pictures that I have posted would be a major undertaking, but adding a new picture from time to time is easy enough. |
