It's a pain in the neck, but having redundant backup is critical. We had a friend whose house was robbed. All their computers and drives were taken. So though they backed up, they still lost all their originals. A co-worker had her hard drive crash. And she had to spend almost a thousand for a service to rescue her digital photo library of all her kids baby pictures. Most IT/computer tech guys I know agree you need one on-site back-up for quickest recovery (like using Apple's Time Machine), and at least one cloud based or off-site backup. Remember, online photosites come and go, often without much warning. So think redundant backups for any critical files! I use a service called CrashPlan to back up most of my files, especially priceless (to me) photo libraries, to the cloud. It can also be used for peer-to-peer backups. So I could set up an encrypted hard drive at my brother's house, and back up files there. And he does the same. Then if a hard drive fails, or my house burns down, I just go over to his place, grab my backup drive, and I'm back in business. Crash Plan's peer-to-peer option is totally free. And their paid plans are quite reasonable for peace-of-mind. There are other equally good cloud backup services. Just depends on how many computers you need to back up and the plan cost. Since then, I lost one hard drive. But was able to easily recover all the files I needed. Then half of my computers got affected by our recent house disaster. But since I have onsite, offsite, and cloud backups, I was back up and running in no time, with no data lost. It's the family photos that matter most to me. |

I back up all of my files to an external hard drive on a weekly basis. The drive is only connected while the backup is in progress. It is a good idea to keep a backup in a different location. Cloud storage is certainly an option, but I like physical media better. |

I agree, Rich... physical backups are faster to make, and faster to recover from. But you really should have both if your pictures or other files are important. We have a friend whose house was burglarized. All the computers and backup drives were stolen. So if it's really critical (like family photos/memories), back up your physical backup to the cloud. You never know when you might need them. |

It is not a good idea to keep all of your backups in the same place. When I was still working I kept some backups locked in my desk at work. Some people have a safety deposit box where they could keep a backup, but it is certainly more convenient to backup to the cloud. |

If you want to have pictures that show as part of your posts you need to use a hosting site that allows third party hosting. Recently Photobucket has announced that their free service will no longer allow third party hosting or even linking. Now you might have to pay as much as $400 a year to do that. Some time ago I paid a one time fee to get extra storage space and now I am paying a yearly fee to keep the site ad free. So far my pictures still appear on various slot BBs, I have seen other people's pictures replaced with a notice that they need to pay up. I do not use Photobucket for cloud storage. I have about 1200 pictures on Photobucket, plus a few movies. The pictures have all been edited to be 1000 pixels wide or less, so the files are not large. I would not mind paying more for Photobucket, but it is not worth $400 to me, especially considering that it often runs poorly. It will be interesting to see how things shake out. Many people have already dumped their Photobucket accounts. If not enough people are willing to pay the may decide to lower their prices, or at least offer more options. |

Hi Rich. Thanks for the details. Slotto mentioned the PB issue a few days ago in our shoutbox. I assumed the problem was encountered when the PB free limit of 2GB was exceeded but am not sure at this stage. Have made a few inquiries to see if my assumption was correct. Considering that we are a content based site and much of that content is photos, I'd like to try and keep us a step ahead of the problem if possible. Your post reads to me that you have not yet been hit for the 400 bucks yes? Is your account currently under 2GB? Thanks. Cheers, Michael. |

PB shows my current plan as Free ... 2GB (initial) + 8.2GB (rewards) for a total of 10.2 GB space. When my PB page comes up, I've only used 0.6 GB of 10.2 about 6%. So, it's not the storage, it's the hosting/linking they want to charge for... I posted the red truck test from "another" PB account I have, it's still hosting pics for now...RM |

I've noticed that the update message is retroactive to all photos for some people. Bill and Randy's photos have all been replaced with the update message, going back several years. Mine still seem to be okay for some reason, although I have never had a paid account with PB. Maybe they haven't gotten around to me yet. |
