In an earlier post I mentioned that I had paid a one time fee to get more space, but I don't know how much space I have available. I just checked my profile and it shows 1009 photos and 15 videos. The space is only 5% full, so I am not eager to have more. The $100 a year option includes linking, if you use that only the link will appear in your posts, people will have to click on each link to see the picture. If you want the pictures to appear in your posts you need 3rd party linking, which costs $400 a year. For now I intend to wait until my pictures no longer show on the slot BBs. If the pictures do go dead it is very unlikely that I would be willing to pay more than $100 a year. Most likely I would put at least some pictures on another site and re-edit my newer posts.

Mine was showing I had used 6%, so you may be getting close... You might want to open a second PB account and let the first one rest, see if that lets your "already" pics stay posted. My second PB account has only used 2%, and it still works for now. Not to say they want catch up to you, but it could be a volume posting thing...RM

Hi all. Thanks to everyone for trying to piece together the details regarding the current PB account ransom situation. Considering we are a content, content, content based community this is worth exploring further. Like many, I have very strong negative feelings regarding PB's 180 degree turn and subsequent ransom note. Unfortunately that's not gonna help return all the pretty pictures we love to view.

My original assumption that it was simply the result of maxing the 2GB limit was incorrect as far as I can tell. While we don't know for sure yet what the trigger is for the hosting/linking payment demand, the current theories are lengthy account age (9-10 years?), number of actual images or percentage of the original allocated space. While the trigger is somewhat irrelevant once it's pulled, it would be nice to know for certain what causes it, to help others determine if they are in the firing line.

For those affected it's time to move on and up so let's look at that... choosing a new image host. Good ol' google returns countless opinions regarding best hosts. There's a detailed and recent (30 June 2017) review of the more popular options at https://www.lifewire.com/free-image-hosting-sites-3486329. It's well worth a read.

From my viewing of host discussions here at The Lodge and elsewhere over the last year or two it seems Flickr and Imgur are the most popular alternatives to PB. With things of this nature I tend to apply Darwin's theory of natural selection, with an internet twist. Internet based discussion soon weeds out the weaker & unreliable options while promoting the strong & reliable. Good enough for me I yell and both Imgur and Flickr seem to rise above the rest.

I'd urge anyone looking for a new host to read the review mentioned earlier. Pay particular attention to the storage limits, if they have any. Likewise note the possible image pixel and image KB size limits, if any. If it's any help I think both Flickr & Imgur are there for the long haul but there's never any guarantee. My personal choice would be Imgur for its relative ease of use and friendly interface. It was designed for one purpose - sharing images quickly and easily.

Windy post hu? Guys, please continue with the open discussion here. If you try a new host, let us know your thoughts and experience with them. If you have further intel on the PB ransom trigger, let's hear it. Like I said, it's natural selection with an internet twist. Thanks.

All the best,
Michael.

http://photobucket.com/terms

to be specific from the TOS ......

Available Plus Account Plans : Photobucket offers the following Plus Account Plans:
o Plus 50 Plan: 52 GB of Storage for $59.99 / Year. The Plus 50 Plan does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting.

o Plus 100 Plan: 102 GB of Storage for $99.99 / Year. The Plus 100 Plan allows for unlimited image linking but does not allow 3rd party image hosting.

o Plus 500 Plan: 502 GB of Storage and unlimited bandwidth for $399.99 / Year. The Plus 500 Plan allows for unlimited image linking and unlimited 3rd party image hosting.

ยท ANY PAYING MEMBER WHOSE PLUS ACCOUNT WAS IN GOOD STANDING AS OF JUNE 1, 2017, SHALL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE ALL THE PHOTOBUCKET SERVICES THAT WERE AVAILABLE TO HIM/HER ON SUCH DATE, INCLUDING IMAGE LINKING AND 3RD PARTY IMAGE HOSTING, UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2018 AS LONG THEY MAINTAIN THEIR CURRENT PLUS ACCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION OR A HIGHER LEVEL PLUS ACCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION DURING SUCH PERIOD OF TIME.

I have a PLUS 20 account that is 20% full, so my privileges are to be extended through DEC 31 2018 according to this.

I hope this helps clear up confusion and spells it out clearly enough for everyone to understand.

yes, it is time to find a different picture host. PB was always quite easy for me to use and dependable. I have heard others complain of it being down on occasion, but that never happened anytime I signed in.

all suggestions about your favorite host should be posted here to help everyone out.
comments and criticisms too.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the in depth analysis.

Im one of their targets! I used PB several times a week for a decade. Annually, I would weed out photos that were less than par or not linked to a specific post. In this way I always maintained a 20 % cushion under their cutoff. Over the last few years the service was pretty dodgey. Frequent lagging with failed actions, out and out lock ups, or completely non functional at the get go.

I can see where it's all my fault ... LOL!

I dont need all those frilly farts and craps (arts-n-crafts) features. I need storage, hosting, and ease of operation.

Not free anymore? No sweat! The chicken shyte way they went about? Well, that's another matter.

Thanks for laying out the PB TOS Al. Several guys mentioned it was more an issue of 3rd party image hosting and the TOS puts it in perspective. The bold text below the plan outlines begins with "Any paying member.....". There is no mention of non paying free-loaders like myself. I've used 10% of my 2GB allowance and all my images are still showing, as are most other member's. Below is what I found regarding free members...

Visiting : There is no cost to visit the Site or to register as a Member.
Free account : Each individual Member gets one free account that provides 2 GB of free storage or space available for your original photo files, or videos under 10min. The free account does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting. If you are interested in image linking and/or 3rd party image hosting, you will need to subscribe to one of our Plus Accounts described below. Free account Members can upgrade to a Plus account at any time.

If a free account Member exceeds 2 GB they may: upgrade to a Plus Account by selecting the appropriate Plus Account subscription level, reducing the amount of storage they are using below 2 GB, or by closing their free account.

If a free account Member has engaged in image linking and/or 3rd party image hosting and subsequently receives a notice from Photobucket stating that their free account is not eligible for such services and their ability to use image linking and 3rd party image hosting has been restricted or suspended, they will need to become a Plus Account Member by selecting the appropriate Plus Account (not all Plus Accounts allow image linking or 3rd party image hosting so please select carefully). Alternatively, they may always log into their Photobucket account, download their images and use a non-Photobucket resource for such services in the future.

I can't help but think we are on borrowed time, for reasons I can't explain. Matters not... the writing's on the wall, it's time to begin the transition to another host.

Pete, you can attach images to posts here at the Lodge, straight from your PC. If you use the "Full Reply Screen" the attachment option appears under the smileys pane. Straight out of the box it only displays a link to the attached image and won't display the actual image in the post itself. Having the image visible in the post requires an extra step as outlined here.

It's not exactly speedy but it does work. Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Michael.

commentary from a news source.
makes the whole thing more simplified and easier to comprehend, but not any easier to accept.
