Headed out last Saturday night with my brother to catch the Foo Fighters' gig in Melbourne. Dave Grohl and the boys built up a storm in the stadium with a near 3 hour non-stop set while outside, one of the worst storms to hit Melbourne in years raged. The stadium has a retractable roof which had been closed due to the approaching storm so we had no idea how bad things were outside until after the show. The storm had passed but walking home from the train station after the gig I came across a guy with his car which had earlier been crushed by a falling tree (he was not in it at the time)! Two storms in one night...

I caught the guys the last time they played here in 2011 and was equally impressed. Footage from that 2011 gig was then used to make their video clip for the song These Days. Wanna see how the Foos rock Melbourne? Hit the button and turn it up..........

Awesome! The Foos are a rocking live act. Did "Rise Against" open for them in Aussie? I'm a fan of them as well.

Yea mate, Rise Against opened for them but we only caught a little more than their final song before the Foos. I'm hoping I don't have to wait another four years before catching FF live again!

Remember 1984?
Surprised you guys from down under haven't mentioned INXS, Crowded House, Men at Work, Hoodoo Gurus, etc.

Talk about 80's, how about "The Cars"... Kind of fitting for this forum?

Caught the Heads live once. They were a great live band. Saw them all perform solo as well, but they were much better together as Talking Heads. When they split, the music, er, stopped making sense.

King Crimson. Housemartins. Tull (pastoral albums only). Beatles. Roxy Music. English Beat. Early Bowie. Old Peter Gabriel. Police. B-52's. Poi Dog Pondering. Blondie. Booker T & the MG's. Mix in occasional James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite or Little Walter blues harp (I play Chromatic). G Love & Special Sauce. Obscure but influential folk group Bud & Travis. Cowboy Junkies. Kelly Joe Phelps - amazing bluesy guitarist.

Recently discovered eclectic folk-influenced Mighty Oaks. The very mellow Chris & Thomas. Jack Johnson (live recordings are great). DC Talk. Jars of Clay. Louis Armstrong. Beethoven. Mozart. Just no heavy opera or rap... both give me a headache right quick.

Highwing, you have some excellent selections listed there. Have not heard of the more obscure ones but will try to check some of them out. I guess all of the down under groups you mentioned would have made an appearance eventually but why stall it hu?

The mighty Hoodoo Gurus - versatile studio band with a killer live performance to take it to the fans. Have seen them play several times, including late last year. I don't think there is another working Aus act that can claim the original member line up still going hard after more than 30 years. Their last CD was titled Gold Watch and included a track named Use-By Date..... a message to their fans perhaps. Here's 1000 Miles Away from their 1991 album Kinky.

INXS had a huge career in Australia and internationally before a rather nasty little boo boo cost the lead singer his life. There's little else to say other than the fact that their music is still popular today. Here's Devil Inside from 1987's Kick.

Crowded House featured Kiwi front man Neil Finn (& later his brother Tim) whose solid voice kept the guys in the top of the tree throughout their career. I caught them at an excellent gig in the late 80's when they played a large concert on a Melbourne shipping wharf. Odd idea but a great evening. Here's Weather With You from 1992's Woodface.

Men At Work's front man Colin Hay has one of the most distinct voices in local music. I grew up on their music and they enjoyed huge local and international success. Many of their songs have become long standing "down under anthems". A well known example of Hay's awesome vocal talent - Be Good Johnny from Business As Usual in 1981.....

Naturally I have to sneak this in...... Down Under from the same album.

Some great bands mentioned there guys! I've always wondered how much downunder music got to your part of the world?
Here's a great Aussie band Grinspoon.
