Some vintage Tonkas I'll be selling; Tonka trucks that I'm selling

Hey guys, I'm helping my dad in clearing out his house. I came across a number of old tin toys, Hubleys, and Tonkas. I'm planning to sell them, but I need to do some research to see what they might be worth as an asking price/starting bid. A lot of them just need a good dusting and cleaning. Any ideas?

The firetruck is L-O-N-G... maybe 2 to 2-1/2 feet.

The jeep's interior is plastic. And windscreen can be folded down flat. maybe 9" - 12" long.

Some of those I don't know what they are. I am by no means an expert on this stuff. I do know, that if there is ANY plastic on them they are from the 70's. Tonka and Buddy L started using plastic in their toys then. Usually, as a general rule of thumb, the ones with plastic are worth much less than those that came earlier. If you do a google search you can usually come up with a value on them. I'm not saying on eBay either.......... There is a book out on Buddy L stuff, but it is very expensive, same for Tonka, around 40 chickens. You need to find a guide on Stamped steel toys, that will have all of the brands in the book. You may well want to look into buying a copy of O'Brien's Collecting Toy Cars & Trucks, ID and Value Guide by Karen O'Brien. I believe that this book is around $40.........

Thanks for the steer, as usual! Sounds like the book could be worth it. I poked around on eBay which confirmed what you say, Dennis... the army jeep seems to be from the late 60's or early 70's, and has a plastic interior. And not worth nearly as much the older metal Tonkas. The Carnation Milk truck looks like it can sell anywhere from $150 to $250 in similar condition to mine. The A&P truck and earth movers seem to around the same value. That's going to help pay for some much littler cars! Or some decent controllers!

If you want some fairly cheap controllers, take a look at the analog Scalextric controllers. They can be had at times for less than ten dollars each. Ninco makes a pretty good analog pistol grip controller also. Parma Econo's will cost you the better part of a Jackson, each! If you don't know which ones,I can send you a link or pictures of them.

Thanks Dennis, most of my 40-year old Aurora AFX controllers are holding up well. But the ones that came with my Tomy Super International set have all failed in under a year. I kept hearing that the Parmas were the way to go (Probably 90s for running the range of T-Jet through Mega G). Do you know if the Ninco's or Scalectrics will work with my stock Tomy tri-power packs?

I don't own any Tonka type gear but I can certainly see the appeal. Those old models are just stunning HWP. Do you intend to keep a few just for the sake of having them and not necessarily becoming a collector?

I've been on the hunt for some Parmas of different ratings for a while. It's a story in itself and not worth going into now but I have a bunch of old Aurora AFX controllers in great condition. The housings are screwed together and are easily separated I believe. When time permits I'd like to look into performing a mod of sorts, similar to that found here in the archives Resistor Mod. There are a few variations of the mod floating around slot sites including a funky one that gives you a dual rated controller, operated by a small toggle switch. I'm hoping to be able to get the controller values I want, in a reliable housing and leave change for a couple of slot cars over what the Parmas would cost me. Another project on the list......

All the best,
Michael.

I just posted the Carnation Truck, Fire Truck, and A&P Tractor trailer (all from the 1950's) up on eB. Auction has 6 days to go... here's hoping. All the proceeds go to fund my kids growing slot racing habit!

Like finally finding a pair of Parma 90's, and the jump track the boys wanted. Guess I should be ordering a BUNCH of extra replacement guide pins! ;-)

Besides, HO cars take up far less room than those behemoths! (well maybe not the track).
