Driver's Eye View

I did this driver's eye view video of my track, East Haven Raceway. I used an inexpensive keychain camera on a Viper Jet chassis.

Great clip!!! Thanks Rich. Nice layout and the distinct absence of click-clacking over track section joins is sweet. I liked the speed build up until the inevitable de-slot. Reminds me of many moons ago when I used to ride a motorcycle. There is a magnificent section of road with various straights and curves not far from where I was living, a true throttle on/off ride. I strapped one of the old cassette tape recorders to the back of my bike and recorded a gradual build in speed over several passes. Thankfully I called it quits before "de-slotting". Hmmm... I think I still have a stash of old cassettes in my shed. I wonder if it's among them......

Cheers,
Michael.

I got a new hi def camera yesterday, it is much more sophisticated than the first camera. The new camera has IR illuminators for close range night vision, interval picture taking and motion detection video recording. The instructions are better than the ones that came with the first camera, but they are printed in the smallest font that I have ever seen, I almost need to use a magnifier to read them. To make things easier I scanned the instructions at 600dpi and dropped them into Word. I saved the Word document as a PDF and I can send that to anyone that is interested. Like the first recorder there is no internal memory, you must add a SD card, that is not mentioned specifically in the directions. The recorder has red and blue indicator lights, but those are located on the side where they are harder to see. The unit does vibrate when any control is activated however. The recorder is rather heavy, it has a metal case and weighs in at 42 grams. I will try to do a driver's eye video of my HO track later today and I also wanted to determine the file size of a recording. With the older camera a 2 minute recording used up 100 M of space, with the new one 2 minutes takes up 344 M.

Hey Rich, that is the best in-car video I've seen! Great sound and picture quality! Can you post a picture of the car set-up? And the model of camera? I want to get one for re-enacting that I can hide in my tricorne hat... the GoPro is just to conspicuous.

Here you go, no extra charge!

The camera is a generic no name 720P type shipped from China. These can be had for less than $10. The new camera cost $30, it is an Ultra HD-1080P. The new camera seems to have a slightly better picture but it is too heavy to use with a regular HO car. When I tried it the car did run but it shook the camera too much to get a good picture. I have seen more simple 1080P cameras that are probably lighter.

I am looking forward to a video of your track. It helps a lot to have a lot of light by the way. Drive as slowly as you can for a start.
