Standing at matches?

Someone posted a link on one of the sites a couple of months ago to the Football Supporters' Federation's http://www.fsf.org.uk/ campaign for safe standing.

Their exhibition is now making its way to Portcullis House at Westminster http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20679867 and has now been backed by 13 clubs. Our near neighbours of Derby are Peterborough are backing it, but Leicester are not.

Unsurprisingly, the big blocker to this is Hillsborough with quotes from the Hillsborough campaign such as "I feel insulted".

Surely the recent developments in the Hillsborough disaster & the Police cover up mean the Taylor report was based on wrong information & needs to be revisited? Surely 20 years down the line, the improvements in technology mean a rethink is perfectly reasonable. The rails they are campaigning for give each person an allocated section and do not allow crowd surges. They work well in Germany, so why not here?

There definitely should be a sensible debate about it while respecting the views of those affected by the Hillsborough tragedy.

I don't think it stands a chance. The top end of football is making far more money now and until a time comes that they think standing would increase profits then I think its doomed. A generation has grown up now who have never stood at Fibert st or the KP and you don't miss what you've never had. Personally I think its worth a try to make watching cheaper and reignite the atmosphere. I haven't read the article but I'm guessing these areas wouldn't be unreserved. I've always been of the opinion that if you want to get an atmosphere in the KP all you need to do is provide an area to stand in a seated unreserved area.

The thing is, away fans (when they're there in numbers) regularly stand because it's nigh on uncontrollable. We do it at away grounds, and opposition fans often do it at our place. The world doesn't end because of that fact!!

... and surely its more dangerous standing in a seated area than an area designed for standing as you risk tripping over the back of the seat in front of you (which I have seen more than a few times following a goal!).

What I can't get my head around is that Hillsborough was basically caused by the police/ticketing problems letting too many people into the area & the big cages stopping people getting out. If it had been a seating area that was penned in & too many people were let in there would have been the same result - I just get frustrated by the knee jerk reaction standing caused it and all standing is bad. (I confess to not having read the Taylor report, but as I say, it is a 20 year old report now)

I'm not sure about the money argument Jase. You fit more standing people than sitting people into the same area. People pay less to stand but you get more people in: The maths depends on a number of factors, but I believe the clubs could get more revenue... That would depend on getting more fans through the gate, but if the tickets were cheaper, then it might not be impossible!

The point I was making about the money was that since the introduction of all seater stadiums that attendances have gone up generating more money. Heres the figures Average cowds

As much as we all know the atmosphere at our ground is a sad parody against what we experienced the fact is more people are watching football in all seater stadiums than were on the old terraces and stadiums. Its sad but I think standing has gone forever, most clubs (which now are businesses more than football clubs as we knew them) will not risk loosing income.

I don't think they want a white hot atmosphere down at Leicester. They'd rather be a family club with less foul language and less of an edge about it. Standing will increase that edge. So will switching the Kop & the Family Stand but they won't entertain that idea either.

If safe standing was returned more people would go, crowds would increase and ticket revenue & profit would be static. Overall revenues & profits though would increase through more catering sales, program sales etc.

Of course clubs could charge the same to stand as sit, we would still pay it and profits would increase.

It was in the paper today that one of the families of a Hillsbrough fan said standing is not safe and that under no circumstances should it be brought back. That person just doesn't understand how standing can b made as safe if not safer than seats.
