England v Brazil

Started slowly but a brilliant double penalty save turned momentum to us. Unlucky with the penalty too, gave by a Portugese ref to the team who speak Portugese.

A stupid goal to give away but Brazil probably deserved one, Rooney and Lampard both took their goals very well.

Brazil defended well and their performance was workmanlike which was a surprise to me.

The atmosphere was non existent. Quietest game so far for me.

Definitely great to beat that team, I don't know what our record against them is but I doubt we've beaten them often. The away game in June shouldn't scare us.

Can't blame the ref. It was unlucky to concede the penalty, but it was clearly the right decision on the replay.

Can't agree with that, Suff. There was no way there was any intent to handle the ball at all. The offence is for "deliberate handball", and the laws of the game are quite clear about what is meant by "deliberate".

Sadly, many refs don't seem to understand that particular aspect.

Well all the TV pundits agreed it was a penalty. Who am I to disagree?

From FIFA's "Laws of the game"...

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following three offences:
• holds an opponent
• spits at an opponent
• handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own
penalty area)
...

Handling the ball
Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with
the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into
consideration:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an
infringement
• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.)
counts as an infringement

etc.....

No way it was a penalty!!!!

I said "never a penalty" at the time & was surprised at the pundit's view. It would have been useful to have had that refereee against Wolves ;)

Should we be getting excited about the 6th best team in the world beating the 18th best team in the world at home? (According to the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings anyway)
