Admirable Adversary
|
Last night while chatting on the server, I was struck by an idea: Why hasn't anyone tried to use PO for battles involving more than two people? I realized that it wouldn't be the easiest feat ever, but I thought the reward would be really cool if the feat could be done. I came up with a rough plan and got a few people to test out some various ideas (thank you to everyone who participated!), and then we put the plan into motion and it was pretty awesome. So to make sure that these ideas don't disappear totally, I thought I'd write them down so we could remember them if we ever wanted to do it again or make edits or whatever. These ideas are all built for double battles, but with some editing could work with triples if players only got 2 Pokemon instead of 3. So here are the main styles that we came up with together: TAG TEAM Co-Op Tag Team: In this mode, two battlers work together on making a doubles team, assigning three Pokemon to each battler. They then battle against another team of two who have done the same and fight until one side wins. During the battle, each team must have one of Pokemon from each battler out on the field (and the Pokemon's nicknames should include the trainer who they belong to to make it more clear). The exception to this rule is when one of the trainers on a side loses all 3 of their Pokemon. If this happens, the remaining trainer on a side may use more than one of their Pokemon at once. Standard double battle rules apply. One trainer on each side is the "battle host" meaning they actually have the team of Pokemon (including theirs and their partner's Pokemon). Their partner should be conversing with them in PM what they should do next and what moves to do and the like. The battling, as the teambuilding, should be a team effort. Blind Tag Team: This mode is like the one above, but the trainers have no idea what Pokemon or strategies their partner may be using and have to generate a team of 3 that they think will pair well with whatever the partner may have. After the half-teams are made there are then two options: Partial Blind: This involves 4 people and is done similarly to Co-Op Tag Team with one of the battlers being the battle host and then receiving pm help from their partner. In this, the two can work together on strategies and what to do next, again with only one of each trainer's Pokemon being out at any given time (assuming they have any Pokemon left). Full Blind: This involves 6 people and is done similarly to Free-For-All Mode (see below). In this version, four battlers make teams of 3 to be paired with someone else's team of 3, but they don't know what their partner has (like before). However, this time, instead of one of the battlers hosting each side, the teams are given to two neutral hosts who put the two half-teams together for each side. (Host A has Player 1 and 2's Pokemon, and Host B has Player 3 and 4's Pokemon). Battling goes as before, but the competitors then PM what moves and such should be done to their host without any knowledge of what their partner has or could do. The last team with Pokemon remaining wins. In this mode item clause and species clause should not be checked. KING OF THE HILL Free-For-All: In this mode 6 people are needed: two neutral hosts and 4 players. The players each make teams of 3 and give those to their given host who will hold 2 players' teams and will be conducted like a double battle (Host A has Player 1 and 2's Pokemon, and Host B has Player 3 and 4's Pokemon). The competitors have no idea what Pokemon or moves anyone else have (unless they've seen them before). The goal is then to be the last trainer standing. Players PM moves to their hosts and can attack ANY of the Pokemon, including ones held by the same host (For example Players 1 on side of Host A could attack Player 2's Pokemon even though they appear on the same side). The last player with surviving Pokemon wins. No timeout clause should be used, but species and item clauses should not. Strategic: This is a variation on King of the Hill in which everything is set up like Free-For-All with 2 hosts and 4 players. In this mode, the goal is also to be the last one standing, but you can't attack just anyone. Battles are set up with a series of two goals to achieve victory. Goal one: destroy your 'teammate.' Players must first fight only the Pokemon on the same side as them (Player 1 and 2 on Host A's side will have to fight only each other as if it were a single battle). Once this first opponent is defeated the player remaning on his or her host side may then use any remaining Pokemon to attack the other hosts side. In this style, one must focus on beating their first opponent as quickly as possible so they don't get wiped out by the opposing side before they have a chance to defend themselves. During this style, moves that only attack the opposing side are allowed, but cannot be used until your first opponent is taken down. No timeout clause should be used, but species and item clauses should not. |
