When a massive earthquake rocks the city of Los Angeles, Emergency Management department head Mike Roark (Tommy Lee Jones) returns from his vacation to help with the city's response. After geologist Dr. Amy Barnes (Anne Heche) warns that a volcano may be forming in sewer tunnels, another severe earthquake unleashes the lava flowing underfoot, threatening to destroy the whole city. As the fiery molten rock runs through the streets, Roark and Barnes must figure out how to divert it.

unlike Dante's Peak which came out the same year, this film takes the route of San Andreas and is far more goofy than terrifying. At no time is the lave really threatening. Some people die, but overall it's a mess of a film. I do love it though bc it's totally wild

And you are... a zombie bride?
The only things I remember about this are the dog and the subway scene where the guy melts into the lava. Dante's Peak may have been cheesy, but it was actually exciting, and at least tried (key word: tried) for some sort of grounding in science.

I also remember the Nostalgia Chick, in her video on both this and Dante's Peak, making fun of the ending's heavy-handed, post-Rodney King "yay, racism is over now!" message.

I think what makes Dante's Peak better than this is that Dante's Peak is cheesy, but it also doesn't take itself too loosely to the point where it feels like a messy joke that isn't even funny. Volcano feels like a joke. It's not plausible, the characters feel like cartoons, and the line "what is magma?" being asked from an adult scientist is absolutely mind boggling. In Dante's Peak, the deaths are far more dark & tense. For example, the death in the hotsprings, or the death where a woman actually melts alive. Those aren't cheesy action movie scenes, but are genuinely creepy and tense. Yes in Volcano i guess a man does melt while trying to save people on the subway, but the way it's shot feels like an absolute joke. The environment being in LA really takes a toll on this film, the paperthin characters, and stupid as hell plot doesn't help either.
