A seemingly ideal day turns disastrous when California's notorious San Andreas fault triggers a devastating, magnitude 9 earthquake, the largest in recorded history. As the Earth cracks open and buildings start to crumble, Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson), an LAFD search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, must navigate the destruction from Los Angeles to San Francisco to bring his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and their only daughter (Alexandra Daddario) to safety.

Before I get to my opinion first off, the tsunami that happened in 2004 along the Indian Ocean, and the Japan tsunami were caused from earthquakes that happened on subduction zone faults. This means the the fault if it slips, it will cause vertical motion along the ocean floor, causing a tsunami. These subduction faults are also farm more violent. SAN ANDREAS FAULT IS NOT A SUBDUCTION ZONE. It may go a little onto the shore, but the motion is horizontal, so no tsunami from the San Andreas fault is possible. If some earthquake happened in Alaska, SF could get one. But not from San Andreas. THE HORIZONTAL MOTION ALONG THE FAULT LINE FOR SAN ANDREAS CAN ONLY GO TO 8.3. Even that is rare. It'll never go to magnitude 9, it's impossible.

Now onto the my opinion:

I stepped into this movie with the lowest expectations, when i say stepped into, i mean metaphorically clicking the filenuke link on primewire. I left this movie, and got what i expected. Living in San Francisco, people don't really fear quakes as our buildings are legally made for safety, disaster can happen, but seeing buildings collapse like this is ridiculous imo and in this movie's case repetitive and boring. With all of these "MAJOR EFFECTS" you lose something called suspense. Disaster films are action films, but they can also work in suspense/thriller, and even spark horror into the lives of the public. You do this with build up. This movie gets started with the over-the-top cgi from the getgo. Second, the characters are every cliched disaster film character you can get. A divorced family with the father being a firefighter to show he's a hero, a rebellious daughter, and a group of scientist. There's cliche situations like a little girl trapped in something, so someone goes to sacrifice themselves to help her. I also never really liked the Rock. This movie is not unique, and is bland af. Anyone saying this is a good action flick is wrong, I posted this thread for post count.

:horrified:

it's a dumb movie that the public enjoys bc they think it can actually happen and it's important and asdfghjkii cool special effects.[

The Poseidon's Adventure had a small budget, and was composed of all special effects back in the 70's. All of them still hold up today, and the sets look beautiful. I don't know why movies like San Andreas don't put time into production. No set value. No great characters. Nothing. The Towering Inferno, Poseidon's Adventure, they have good characters that you care for. I don't like any of the cliche characters in San Andreas. It baffles me.
ahhhhhh MICHAEL GOING IN ON HIS DISASTER LOVE >>> :sipary:

I don't think it can actually happen. I just enjoyed it since it was dumb fun.

i understand that

but disaster films shouldn't just be dumb fun. They should evoke suspense, they should make people afraid, they should put people on edge. Even though they're action films, they should evoke emotional and suspenseful moments, not just dumb fun. Like i'm not saying disaster films have to be serious the entire time, but at least make it have a balance. Don't just make a sharknado. Sorry, i'm not bashing your opinion, but I just think differently

I guess I'm in the minority but the only movies that were suspenseful in this category to me were Poseidon, 2012, Dantes Peak, and The Day After Tomorrow.

watch the original Poseidon's Adventure, watch Towering Inferno, and watch Cassandra's Crossing.

The 90's, and 2000's got it wrong

Bitch, I totally get the feeling, even if I ain't much on disaster movies themselves, that's something I apply 2 everything I watch cuz there's a srs fucking problem if all u can say u liked about a movie is that it was "fun." #NoTeaNoShade I just rly can't stand it, cuz, ya bitch, I love me some campy/messy/fun movies myself, but any sorta movie I like, I already have specific elements that I could list as enjoyable factors that made the film worth liking. Now, I don't apply this 2 everything, cuz I damn well now we got some shitty ass B movies that know they bad & embrace that fact about themselves, so, u gotta look mostly on the "fun" quality of those or how well they handled the #SoBadItsGood qualification, but all these other movies? Uh uh, bitch, not 2day, which is y I always wanna ask a ho they reasons 4 liking something or not, cuz I try 2 have my bases covered & am just curious 2 c if I missed something that some1 else saw that I didn't. This is y I love this kinda passion when it comes 2 movies cuz I feel the same type of way, 4 the most part, & believe it's just testament 2 ur love 4 something.
