A seemingly ideal day turns disastrous when California's notorious San Andreas fault triggers a devastating, magnitude 9 earthquake, the largest in recorded history. As the Earth cracks open and buildings start to crumble, Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson), an LAFD search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, must navigate the destruction from Los Angeles to San Francisco to bring his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and their only daughter (Alexandra Daddario) to safety.

Before I get to my opinion first off, the tsunami that happened in 2004 along the Indian Ocean, and the Japan tsunami were caused from earthquakes that happened on subduction zone faults. This means the the fault if it slips, it will cause vertical motion along the ocean floor, causing a tsunami. These subduction faults are also farm more violent. SAN ANDREAS FAULT IS NOT A SUBDUCTION ZONE. It may go a little onto the shore, but the motion is horizontal, so no tsunami from the San Andreas fault is possible. If some earthquake happened in Alaska, SF could get one. But not from San Andreas. THE HORIZONTAL MOTION ALONG THE FAULT LINE FOR SAN ANDREAS CAN ONLY GO TO 8.3. Even that is rare. It'll never go to magnitude 9, it's impossible.

Now onto the my opinion:

I stepped into this movie with the lowest expectations, when i say stepped into, i mean metaphorically clicking the filenuke link on primewire. I left this movie, and got what i expected. Living in San Francisco, people don't really fear quakes as our buildings are legally made for safety, disaster can happen, but seeing buildings collapse like this is ridiculous imo and in this movie's case repetitive and boring. With all of these "MAJOR EFFECTS" you lose something called suspense. Disaster films are action films, but they can also work in suspense/thriller, and even spark horror into the lives of the public. You do this with build up. This movie gets started with the over-the-top cgi from the getgo. Second, the characters are every cliched disaster film character you can get. A divorced family with the father being a firefighter to show he's a hero, a rebellious daughter, and a group of scientist. There's cliche situations like a little girl trapped in something, so someone goes to sacrifice themselves to help her. I also never really liked the Rock. This movie is not unique, and is bland af. Anyone saying this is a good action flick is wrong, I posted this thread for post count.

:horrified:

LOL No, it was just not worth a sequel so I feel like I'm crazy for actually wanting one. You're fine. I was exaggerating the "I feel like a terrible person". :rip:

Though I do actually like the idea behind it. That it's centered around the "Ring of Fire" volcano chain. That at least seems like more of a viable threat than the San Andreas fault.

And you are... a zombie bride?
Everything that's been said about this movie is true, but I enjoyed it precisely because of how unapologetically cliched and dumb it was. This is probably the stupidest movie I've seen in a long time, but I just wanted to see shit getting destroyed, and I got what I paid for. Does it hold a candle to '70s disaster flicks like The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, or even '90s films like Independence Day and Dante's Peak? No. The only reason I might ever have to watch this again is to fast-forward to the good parts, because it's not like there's any suspense or interesting characters in between, and since all of those have been uploaded to YouTube anyway, that's not a good reason. (The same thing can be said about Into the Storm, as well.) But it's not a movie I can bring myself to hate, or even dislike. It felt like everybody going in knew exactly what kind of dumb shit they were making, and they just rolled with it.
