![]() DC Blurb: Two estranged brothers reunite seven months after their father’s disappearance to liquidate his anemic video store. While there, they unearth an old VCR board game that acts as an inter-dimensional hub to a nightmare world where their father’s soul is trapped & can only be saved by playing the game. The film is an adventure horror that pays loving tribute to the VHS format, video stores, and board games of the era. Retro Commercial: Trailer: Do You Dare Go Beyond The Gates? As much as I feel a great attempt was made w/ this (something I don't say lightly, becuz the whole "VHS nostalgia" movement has largely annoyed the shit outta me), the film could've used a little less nostaglia & a little more polishing 2 fully realize the idea it was working w/. While the concept is very much present &, interestingly enough, handled in a way that is ambiguous enough 2 make the game applicable 2 multiple scenarios if needed, the film has some fairly terrible dialogue. Despite the fantastic work done by the actors 2 convince me otherwise (particularly w/ Barbara Crampton's captivating performance as the VHS vixen, Evelyn), the film doesn't rly do a good job @ fully developing the charries or establishing y certain 1's operate the way they do (not 2 mention the fact that the girl involved in the game's insidious antics disappears w/out explanation multiple times, even tho it feels like she should be involved, so, idk what 2 tell u there...), which leaves the actors fairly awkwardly trying 2 make their mark when possible w/ the dynamic between charries (but NOTHING will be able 2 4give that blatantly try-hard piece of writing where 1 of the charries re: 2 a movie as a "video nasty," I'm still fucking cringing). Alongside that, the film never feels as if it fully realizes the stakes the charries r put in w/ its relatively lax/muted pace (such as when 1 charrie is quite obvsly killed by the game & every1 just reacts relatively normally 2wards the death instead of going, "Holy fshit, we shouldn't have fucked w/ that game" or some shit...), which is admittedly better than rehashing oft-used "killer game" tropes, like 2006's Stay Alive is guilty of doing. Other than those complaints, however, the movie is generally a convincing piece of supernatural horror by serving up a very From Beyondian aesthetic in appropriate places (I'm willing 2 bet this was inspired by that film w/ the color scheme they were working w/ & given Barbara Crampton's casting, tho), ft. some of the best gore effects I've seen in an indie ft. in awhile, & offering up a kickass synth score that makes me want 2 BLAST that shit this instant (if only I could find the soundtrack...). If ur like me & still have that nostalgia 4 the era of magnificently cheesy & practical horror & VHS tapes & don't wanna bother w/ those little shitfest "throwback slashers" flooding the indie scene, then this is definitely the movie 4 u. W/ 6 & 1/2 inventive little VCR game designs worth capitalizing on & extorting money from ur fanbase w/ outta 10, I'd recommend 4 @ least a 1 time viewing, if not more. |

I didn't like this, so fuckin boring. I still love the premise so I'd be interested in a sequel that wasn't the most boring piece of shit ever. And a female character whose only characteristic is staying with an abusive boyfriend

EVERY1 SHITTING ON THE TERRIBLE HANDLING OF THE ONLY SEMI-IMPORTANT FEMALE CHARRIE >>>> ![]() (I am casually hoping the sequel will @ least be better, tho, since I thought Chase Williamson's charrie/performance was the best, so, hopefully by giving him more 2 do will prove successful )

I think part of what makes this boring is that there really is no other dimension. Like it's just the same house with colored lights and that's the end. In the beginning it's literally them just going on with their lives, grabbing cards, and going with the flow. Sure I mean there are nightmares and zombies, but they could just like move out lmao. Like there is never a sense of danger in the first 2 acts at least, until they pick up a card which they really don't have to do. |

Hit the nail on the head, there. Like, I understand budgetary constraints & I think they made the conclusion look convincing enough w/ the colors 4 the no money they had, but there's literally NO.FUCKING.STAKES. They coulda stopped after they killed the 1st motherfucker or @ least reacted in a suspicious manner, but NOPE, it's just all peachy-fucking-keen up in their universe. Absolutely NO supernatural murder via VHS board games going on here!
