Amelia (Essie Davis) is a single mother plagued by the violent death of her husband. When a disturbing storybook called Mister Babadook turns up at her house, she is forced to do battle with her son's deep-seated fear of a monster. Soon she discovers a sinister presence all around her. A chilling tale of unseen and otherworldly horror in the haunting tradition of The Orphanage, Jennifer Kent's visceral journey into the heart of fear itself is as terrifying as it is believable.
Can't believe we didn't have a thread for this movie. It's a great slow-burn chiller anchored by an outstanding lead performance from Essie Davis, and one that works just as well as a domestic drama about a struggling single mother as it does as a supernatural horror film.

But that's not what I came for. Right now, it's enjoying a surge in popularity for the most random reason: Netflix accidentally put it in their queue of LGBT-themed movies, and as a result, he's become an ironic gay icon out of nowhere, the meme truly taking off once Pride Month came around. All this has made me want to watch it again to figure out what Netflix saw that I missed.

I find it funny about how quick ppl wanna change their tune about how "[x] horror antagonist is a gay icon!" when ppl wanna start saying that Pennywise qualifies until they realize the implications of what they're saying w/ IT preying upon children & explicitly murdering a gay charrie out of the few adults it does murder, but didn't find absolutely anything wrong w/ The Babadook's ass being literal mental illness just becuz it was so "quirky" that Netflix mistakenly put the movie in the gay section. It isn't all fun & games when u realize how trashy this meme is, now, is it?

Yeah... the joke was funny when it was ironic and about making fun of Netflix's blunder, but then people tried to actually interpret the film through an LGBT lens, and it didn't work, partly because it wasn't written with such in mind and partly because one of the big metaphors it was working with was mental illness. Then it happened again with Pennywise, who is, like you said, a child predator, and it got really uncomfortable.
