IMDB Blurb:
A young widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist.

I am honestly SHAKEN we didn't have a thread 4 this already based on the search function cuz I coulda SWORE we did :SHOOK: :SHOOK: :SHOOK: Anyway, this movie is STILL. a total mess, the ending just HAPPENS (& is very clearly a poorly post-production-edited, Saw-ripped nightmare...), the CGI is horrendous (particularly in the deaths...), & either which way this movie played out, it RLY wouldn't have a satisfying ending (I like Jamie 2 much as a charrie 2 accept him & every1 else dying in every version), BUT, I still think this is the most aesthetically plzing movie James Wan has ever shot becuz the color grading is GODLY w/ the ways scenes will have a blue or grayish hue w/ vibrant POPS of red, the sound mixing leaves me UNPREPARED EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. becuz unlike the Insidious/Conjuring movies the silence is genuinely tense w/out throwing in a cheap jumpscare immediately after-the-fact, & as far as antagonist go Mary Shaw is just simply underrated as they come w/ how in-depth her abilities were thought-out b4hand w/out just devolving in2 a string of cliches over the course of the movie (even if she's just another Freddy Krueger, I still love her overall #Thing™). :gag: So, if I'm being incredibly honest, this is probz my fav movie by James Wan just simply cuz I'm a total slut 4 dummy horror & the aesthetic of most of the movie wins out over its many shortcomings. #SrryBoutIt :gorl:

Mary Shaw is a fantastic villain. When will your faves have their own creepy-ass nursery rhyme? Oh, probz never.* :nerp:

The color grading & especially the pops of red mixed in with all the pale blue >>>

THE CREEPY SCORE which is the real star of the movie & deserved top billing & which is better than Saw's score but gets no credit cuz the movie is forgotten >>>

Also this movie is peak Ryan Kwanten, and considering that lowest-point Ryan Kwanten is still v foxy, that's saying something. :oop:

*unless your fave is Freddy Krueger, k bye

If James Wan made this today it would be amazing, he’s a much better director now.

I do think that he's better now. I wonder what he'd do differently about this movie today (besides hopefully no bad CGI :bangvoyage: ).

I would think that he at least has a good enough track record now that the studio wouldn't meddle in the screenwriting phase as much, so it'd probably be truer to his and Leigh's original vision which I'm sure was better.

This also reminded me of a blog post that Whannell made a few years ago about the making of the movie. It's def worth a read and provides a lot of insight into why the movie is the way it is:
