The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Rated R Spoiler: click to toggle Return of the Living Dead Part II (1988) Rated R Spoiler: click to toggle Return of the Living Dead 3 (1993) Rated R for horror violence and gore, and for language and sexuality Spoiler: click to toggle Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (2005) Rated R for horror violence/gore and language Spoiler: click to toggle Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (2005) Rated R for strong violence/gore, sexuality, nudity, drug use and language Spoiler: click to toggle I had the fortune of seeing the original for the first time this past weekend at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival here in Fort Lauderdale, where they had Linnea Quigley there for a Q&A session and a trivia game afterwards. That really is the perfect place to see a movie like this, a horror-comedy with an in-your-face punk rock attitude that proves, once and for all, that lacking a compelling plot and characters is no obstacle to making a really entertaining movie. This is probably one of the best zombie movies and horror-comedies I've ever seen, even in spite of its real narrative and structural problems, largely on the strength of that attitude and energy; the jokes land, the effects are great, the soundtrack is amazing, and while the acting isn't the greatest, the actors themselves all felt like they were having a blast with their characters. It felt like Scream but for zombies, ten years early, combined with Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video or old-school Headbanger's Ball on MTV. Those sequels, though... yikes. The third one is the only one I've heard any decent things about. The two DTV films from 2005 look especially bad. My full review of the first film is here. |
