I have mixed feelings about this episode. Well, the episode itself is enjoyable enough. But a certain member of the Recess gang really ticks me off. And I’m sure you know who it is. The safety rangers (who are basically crossing guards) come to Miss Grotke’s room for a presentation. Most of the students couldn’t care less about this, but Mikey is fascinated. It is suddenly his dream to become a safety ranger, even though he doesn’t really qualify. Since he knows Captain Brad (the douchie leader of the rangers) will never let him join, Mikey sadly gives up. His friends, however, are determined to make Mikey’s dream come true. Spinelli swipes a rule book and the gang finds out that Mikey can become a safety ranger without Brad’s approval, but he needs two members to back him up. So TJ and the gang find potential candidates, but they want something in return: To sing the national anthem on the PA system. To do this, they need to talk to the kid who works in the office. This is when we meet Menlo, an OCD nerd that spends his whole school day working for Miss Lemon in the office. Menlo isn’t willing to let the safety rangers sing, but the gang promises to give him something in return. It turns out, he wants to carry Ashley A.’s books. Ashley A. will do it if TJ and friends get her little sister Brittany to give back her diary. Brittany will do that if she can sit on King Bob’s throne. King Bob will grant Brittany her wish if he had a friend. So King Bob is given a puppy, and the whole thing falls into place. Mikey gets his wish; he is now a safety ranger, and all is well. But minutes after the gang leaves Mikey helping kids cross the street, they discover that he quit. Apparently he decides he just wasn’t cut out for the job, and his new dream is to be a pilot. His friends abruptly leave the room, only I would have done a lot more, like yell at Mikey how a whole recess had been wasted just so he could be a safety ranger for five minutes. God, Mikey p***ed me off in this. Granted, he might not have known about everything his friends went through to get him that job. But still… it was irritating. However, it was a good episode. It was fun seeing everything the gang had to go through, and Spinelli’s conversation with Brittany A. was entertaining. And once again, it just goes to show you how great the friendship is between the main kids in the show. They were willing to do anything just so Mikey could be happy. I think another reason why I liked this episode is because Mikey wasn’t even in it that much. It mainly focused on the other 5 kids, which was nice. I don’t hate Mikey, but he is my least favorite out of the gang, and I kind of like having a little break from him. Summary: The Good: Got a good mix of side characters involved. Was fun to see how far the gang was willing to go to help a friend. The Not-So-Good: Mikey Best Part: When everything came together at the end… Bob playing with the puppy, Brittany giving the diary back, etc. To Sum It Up: Despite Mikey throwing away everything his friends did for him, this is still a solid episode about friendship and helping others. Grade: A- |

If "Jinxed" wasn't frustrating enough, Mikey's behavior at the end of the episode drove me nuts (but it was still funny!). Seeing as this one was paired up with "Jinxed", this is another one that was re-run to death. |

*shudders* Well, it was pretty much a giant fetch quest episode that in the end does not even matter. However, I do appreciate the whole Menlo x Ashley A. ship in this episode. Too bad it aint brought back in laterepisodes. Hey, that makes a good episode idea! |

Really? It was re-ran a lot? I don't remember seeing it too often. I do think I saw the beauty pagent one a thousand times though... and the yo-yo episode seemed to be on a lot too, at least for me. I agree about Menlo and Ashley, I wish they would have brought that up more! |

Now that I remember, as an interesting fact if anyone wanted to know, this was the last episode of Recess reran on American television as of August 2012. It last played October 27, 2011 on Disney XD. Though sometimes, and I mean SOMETIMES, like once in a blue moon, they might play an episode of the show after a movie if it runs short. They used to do that a lot on Toon Disney with 101 Dalmatians: The Series. |

Yeah, I found Mikey really annoying too. But if you think about it, it's probably a good thing that he quit his job. I mean seriously, can you imagine him as a crossing guard? He'd probably forget about stopping cars within five minutes and start reciting poetry. "A car is a car, if it can take you nearby or far!" Edited by deLattre, Aug 6 2012, 08:35 PM.

I didn't really like this episode, mainly because of the ending but it wasn't bad. |
