(Continued from Crescendo.)

The next few days were difficult for Songbird. There was a great deal of various kinds of therapy, both mentally helping her cope with losing her hand and physically by teaching her how to use her new prosthetic. Catching sleep was difficult, and she seemed extremely grateful for the support she got from Lune, Valjean, and Bunny. She was frustrated by how slowly she was learning to control her new hand, though it at least looked realistic enough. Several times a day, she would ask how long she'd been there, and how much longer she would have to stay.

But, finally, the day she got to head home arrived. Her father brought clothes for her from her apartment, so she wouldn't have to wear the jumpsuit home. She had spent the night before begging Lune to be with her for her release, and then turning around and asking if it was really alright...

Songbird was positively haggard when she was released, and despite getting to go home and the promise of getting to sleep in her own bed, her spirits were clearly not doing well... She managed to get her shirt and blue jeans on by herself, with difficulty, but needed help with her socks. Then she stepped into her black tennis shoes...and glared hatefully at the laces. Sighing in frustration, she shoved the strings into the shoes... Then she turned to Lune, if she was there, and with Bunny's help, asked if Lune was ready...

Bunny, for her part, hadn't gotten much progress made on her code, and had discovered that, much like Infiniti, the hack interfered with her old weapons and such. She did what she could to take it in stride, not wanting to upset Songbird further. She had also offered to copy the sign language subroutines for Infiniti, so she could translate, too...

Lune hadn't really even moved an inch from the hospital room unless Songbird was going to be moving with her. If she couldn't go with, she'd just wait. They'd enjoyed a tasty meal together courtesy of Lune calling in a favor, the restaurant she ordered from being open much later than most. She'd provided support whenever she could, although it was clear that she was looking pretty haggard herself.

"You'd have to tell me to go away to get me to not be with you." she said with a chuckle when Songbird was begging to have Lune stay with her. And no hospital staffers were going to tell her otherwise. At this point, she'd probably jump on them and bite their necks if they tried to. Thankfully, there wasn't any sort of hassle. Even still when Songbird turned around to ask if it was really alright, Lune just gave her a little smirk. "Again, you'd have to tell me to actually get out of here and run me off."

Despite the fact that the two girls were relentlessly flirting with one another before, Lune was surprisingly polite and turned herself(a bit) away so that when Songbird was getting dressed, she wasn't staring at her. Regardless, she helped out with the socks, and instead of letting the girl stuff her laces into her shoes, Lune got down on one knee and tied them for her. "Can't go out with untied shoes." she said softly, finishing things neatly and quickly for her.

So yes, she was most certainly there! After Lune got the translation, she nodded with a soft 'mm-hmm', ready to get going with her.

Infiniti, for her part, was more than happy to get a hold of those sign language subroutines; they'd be a godsend in the future as far as she was concerned.

Valjean had, of course, returned the next morning and had offered to let Lune get some sleep during the days, but when she insisted on staying by his daughter's side, he gave them both a kiss on the cheek and his blessings. He told them both to call him if they needed anything, and had gone on to work.

But now, with Infiniti sort of able to understand Songbird, the two new friends left together with their Navis in tow. Tying the young woman's shoes earned Lune a kiss on the cheek. Once they were out in the early afternoon sun, Songbird paused. She started signing to Bunny, and Infiniti would be able to tell why it was hard to understand her. Many signs were made with only the right hand, and she was improvising by using her left, and it was obvious that was her non-dominant hand. Not only that, but there were signs that used both hands, and she was only using her left. It was like trying to understand someone speaking with several speech impediments and a mental handicap, besides.

It was clear that Bunny understood her better for knowing nuances of how Songbird normally talked, but what Infiniti would probably be able to get, on her own, was something about finding her family, or something like that.

Bunny shook her head. "Nope. You and Lune should head back to your place and get some sleep. Or go back to Lune's place. That might be a better idea. You can find the guys tomorrow." Songbird nodded, sighing, but clearly seeing the wisdom in that. She looked to Lune for direction...

Lune hissed a bit at the sun, groaning as she unfurled her umbrella and held it so as to shield herself as much from the evil day star as much as possible. It looked like it was painful for her to stand under it, her eyes squinting as she tried to shield herself the moment before she'd pulled her umbrella. Breathing a little bit as she had some cover, she rubbed at her eyes with one hand.

At the idea of going back to Songbird's place, Lune seemed to think that that was a good idea... and then it went to her place. Lune's eyes suddenly widened a little bit, and she backed up a step without realizing it. "Iiiii'm not sure if that's so much of a good idea. My place is... not exactly suitable for habitation for any stretch of time, really."

"Your place should also be vacant of assholes. Assholes who might have more than chains and pipes, this time. And as much as we all want to see these assholes rearranged so they're choking on their own cocks, I think we can all also agree that avoiding things that can poke holes in us from a distance is a good idea. Unless you're saying that you're immune to gunshots? And I mean hey, if you are, then cool, but I think Infiniti would appreciate you having the number of holes you currently have in your body, no more, right now."

Songbird shrugged and signed, with Bunny translating, "She says, quote, Bunny has a point. I don't want either of us getting shot, especially when we just met each other. I'm not sure I'd take a bullet for you, just yet."

Lune shrugged a bit. "Well, okay, if that's what you want to do then I won't protest. I get it." she said, gesturing the way she would be walking before walking at Songbird's side, eyes scanning the way that they walked. She... understood the woman's statements. All of them. Mostly, Lune kept to her own thoughts while they were walking. It didn't take long, and it almost seemed like she was reliving the time that they'd first met. Or rather, the time that Lune scooped her up and took her to the hospital. Said hospital wasn't too from her place, which required a little bit in the way of twists and turns for anything to actually turn up. They'd made a right down one street, the block being much more crowded with buildings. But at the same time, as they continued, they would find that things were running down. There was no gang presence around here, or at most possibly anymore, but people were poorer around here. Eventually, things became more sparse. Abandoned. Like this was just an outlier part of End City that no one paid attention to anymore.

It was a this point that Lune stepped between two broken-up houses, went a ways there, and rounded multiple corners, one after another right through an actually-standing doorway into one of the least-dilapidated houses in the area, smaller, but hidden by everything else. There was another door after the doorway that led into an enclosure, and Lune held that door open for Songbird as it led into... christ this place was in bad shape. Not for anything of Lune's fault, clearly, but it would almost give new meaning to 'shacking up'. She had done what she could to secure the place, but much like anywhere else, anyone who really wanted to get in probably would. There were some open skylights, but good luck to anyone who actually wanted in at the same time. A bed was in the corner, a makeshift canopy bed that Lune had clearly put together the 'frame' for on her own out of what she could find, and purple drapes over it that blocked out just about all light from those that would sleep in it. There was a couch that'd seen better days, clearly patched up many times. Tour posters were taped all over the walls... they had Lune on them, from years long past. A guitar case could be seen next to the bed. And aside from that, a 'kitchen' had been set up with a little minifridge powered by a generator only hooked up to it, and a gas-powered single burner.

'Spartan' wasn't really accurate, but to some people it would've been. "Well, welcome to my humble abode. I'm really sorry that I can't do better, and it's not really suited to receive guests, but... at least it's not dirty. I do my damndest to keep things clean." Everything smelled of lavender, actually.

Songbird smiled softly and started signing, Bunny translating. "It's fine, and it smells lovely. But Bunny's right. I should get some sleep. You want me to take the couch?" Since she wasn't deaf, just mute, Songbird started exploring a bit, peering around a bit. She clearly admired the bed. "Hey, Mom? Are you gonna sleep naked? It's not like you even have a set of pajamas..." Songbird turned a bright pink and coughed, tugging at the black T-shirt she was wearing, the white skull distorting as she tugged on it, wearing a pair of blue jeans with it, a red leather belt holding those up.

Lune waved her hand in a dismissive gesture. "I won't hear of it. Take the bed. Get the best rest that you can." she said with a little smile, watching as Songbird looked around at... whatever there was to look around at. Doubtful she cared much about old memories. Guess it was one of the positive things Lune had to look back on, so of course she kept them.

Upon hearing Bunny's remark, Lune blushed a little bit and looked embarrassed. "Sorry, I don't keep any pajamas around or I'd lend you a pair. I usually just sleep in the nude, too. If you want I'll go out and grab you something to sleep in."

Songbird snorted and signed, and Bunny translated again, "She says don't worry about it. She'll sleep in her clothes." As Bunny translated, her operator pulled the curtains on the bed back, looking for a moment. Snorting again, she gestured Lune closer. Sitting down on the edge of the bed, she jerked at her shoestrings and kicked her shoes off, then rolled onto the bed, laying closer to the wall. Taking her PET off her belt, she laid it on the bed next to the pillow, propped up against the wall.

"Mom, you realize, I'm turning off your alarms, right? You need your sleep. You both do. I'm gonna work on getting my comm functions back up and running. When you get up, I'll hopefully be able to let you know if you got any e-mail or voice mails." Songbird shrugged and nodded, laying on her side to make sure there was enough room for Lune...

Lune shrugged. "If that's what you'd like to do, then be my guest." she said, giving another smile as she sat on the couch and begin to take her boots off. As the drapery around the bed was pulled back... it wasn't the absolute lap of luxury, but Lune clearly valued her beauty sleep. Nice purple floral print bedcoverings, plenty of pillows... gee she really liked purple. And it was a pretty big bed, clearly one made for more than one person. Or people who just liked larger beds, who knew? By the time Songbird gestured to Lune, Lune had kicked her boots off, the footwear landing on the ground and making a heavy, loud thud and seemingly forcing themselves upright just by what it looked like.

"Um, okay..." she said when gestured closer, her stocking and fishnetted feet gently treading across the floor to the bed. There was a nightstand that Lune put Infiniti on, but the PET seemed(at least by a glance) quiet and devoid of much activity. Lune herself sat on the bed, looking out at her 'home' with a rather different eye... god she was embarrassed about all of this. Who knew she'd be taking a girl here one day? Heh...

Sliding into the bed, the two girls didn't need to make sure there was room for one another thankfully. Lune laid on her back and there was still plenty of space for both of them. And it seemed more like Lune was laying on her back because she was feeling a little shy and awkward.

Feeling Lune slip into the bed, Songbird smiled to Bunny. She kissed her finger and pressed it to the screen, and with a warm smile, Bunny kissed her palm and pressed it to the other side of the screen. "Night, Mom. Sleep well. Love you." Songbird signed 'I love you' back to her, and then the PET's screen shut down, going into standby mode.

And then Songbird laid there in the bed, eyes open, heart pounding as she realized she was lying right next to Lune in her bed. For a long moment, she did nothing, but after a while, she rolled onto her back and turned her head to see whether Lune was awake...

Lune smiled widely as she heard the two of them tell each other goodnight, having to restrain herself from giggling a little bit. Certainly, once everything was out she was more nervous, too, but she was doing her best to keep her nerves under control. Hearing and feeling Songbird move, Lune turned her own head and looked the girl's way.

"Hey there beautiful." she said with a wink, grinning a little bit lopsidedly as she seemed to enjoy just saying that, a silly tone in her voice.

Songbird's cheeks tinged pink and she smiled, giggling silently. Taking a breath, her left hand sought out Lune's and gave it a gentle squeeze, the mute girl's eyes not leaving Lune's...

Lune smirked and took Songbird's hand in her own when it was squeezed, bringing it up to her face and giving it a little kiss as she kept eye contact. "I'll do my best to take care of you here. Promise. And I also promise I won't take advantage of you. Not unless you ask really, really nicely." she said with a little wink.

Songbird...for a long moment, her expression was difficult to read, a mixture of relief and disappointment...but she smiled, all the same, and squeezed Lune's hand again. She did pull Lune's hand closer, a bit awkwardly, and kissed it in turn... Then, trying to force herself to relax, she closed her eyes and tried to slow her breathing...

Snickering a little bit, it was clear that Lune was more than capable of reading the emotions on Songbird's face, and she shook her head, grinning. "Take that how you will. But I mean hey, I may be a vampire but I try to have somewhat of a conscience." When Songbird kissed her hand, she giggled and sidled up next to the girl. "You get your sleep, okay? Everything'll be fine and just get better from here on out, promise." She brushed her hand a few times over the girl's head. "Just relax..."

Songbird thought, for a moment, thought Lune's touch would excite her enough to keep her awake, but between the gentleness of the touch, Lune's quiet urging her to relax, and her own exhaustion, Songbird sank into a deep, heavy, and blissfully dreamless sleep...

***

Bunny...did not actually go into standby. She stared at the jumbled messes of code in front of her and sighed in frustration. They were the same jumbled messes that she'd been trying to unravel for the past several days. At least she had close-range PET-to-PET text comms... "Hey, Infy," she typed. "You awake? Could use a hand if you are." And...sent!

Lune smiled, grateful that she wasn't ending up doing exactly what Songbird thought that she might do because of her touch, and when the girl was good and sleeping she closed her eyes, still sidled up there, and was more than happy to let the sweet embrace of sleep in the early afternoon take her quickly. She just hoped she didn't have those dreams, again...

---

It was barely a moment before the message was sent, and...

"Sup?" Infiniti said, a floating head right next to Bunny all of a sudden. "Something giving you some grief? ... someone?"

"Yep," Bunny said, gesturing to the code. "Me. Or maybe it'd be more precise to say my hacker." Sighing, she poked at the codebase. "Not a complete backup, just a copy of the parts of me tied to comms. I shouldn't have to network to your PET just to get out a call or check Mom's email... I'm not sure what the fuck this all is, and I can only guess he wanted it scrambled so I couldn't get my GPS position and send it to someone... Feel like giving me a hand with this?"

Humming a little bit, Infiniti scratched her chin with a hand that came out of nowhere before the rest of her body appeared in short order. At least she didn't unnerve Bunny anymore, or at least if she did she couldn't tell. "Hmm... Well, admittedly, my problem solving skills tend more towards the 'hit it until it works or breaks' mentality but I could give you a literal hand here and see what happens."

Her eyes glowing again, Infiniti reached into the codebase herself with a hand to begin to interface, so that she could see what she'd see.
