Updates

-11/22/12: Well, after a VERY long hiatus, I am pleased to announce that Threads of Fate is back in business! I've cleaned up the place a little bit, so hopefully you'll notice and have an improved experience from before! Since we've been gone for so long, I expect things to be slow in the beginning, but I hope the board will gradually increase in activity! I personally would like to apologize for how things went down and for the place being inactive for so long. Anyway, with that out of the way, let's hope something like this doesn't happen again and welcome back everyone who actually remembers this place! The Dark Tournament is still coming up, so we're going to try to train hard until then and we'll see what happens on that fateful day on Hanging Neck Island!

For everyone that has made a character here on Threads of Fate, I wish to inform you that there has been a drastic change in how character abilities work. No longer are there Classes or Signature Attacks on the board, just whatever you put under Skills. This means your character can basically have whatever powers you wish, so long as they aren't over powered and match whatever your character's Spiritual Class is. Also, this means that the 'Class' section of the character sheet has been removed, meaning you'll have to edit your Character Sheet and remove that section and your Signature Attack section as well. Also, I have added a 'Nationality' listing under the Character Sheet, so you will need to add that as well.

Well, they had a team together now, but that didn't mean Angin's life was going to get any easier. Aside from the training, where he'd hit a slight brick wall in terms of time VS effort, Angin was getting a lot more work in his bodyguarding job ever since he'd explained that demons were a real thing. His boss had panicked and decreed all his kids needed appropriate looking after, which was all well and good but now Angin had to deal with something which was (in the first place) not his fault. His boss's daughter, Akiko, had managed to somehow have her notebook stolen. But the reason he was now getting involved was that Akiko had apparently seen a ghost do it, a spectral hand had snuck into her purse and stolen the notebook while scrawling "I'll kill you" on the walls as it went. Which wasn't the kind of thing a wealthy family really wanted to have happen to their precious daughter. So, here Angin was wandering around a fairly well known university, with his hands sheepishly shoved into his pockets.

He shouldn't be doing this, he should be out training some more, he could almost feel himself getting rusty. After so long of not training he was beginning to wonder whether it was like that for everyone. Rando was powerful but Angin got the feeling they shouldn't have been able to beat him at all, much less for him to stand his ground against that demon like he was an equal. It was actually kind of worrying. Like, if they actually reached the Dark Tournement, they'd have to deal with so much more... still, Angin trusted Kira. She was trustworthy, heck, Angin'd even call them friends he believed she'd get stronger in time. And the other girl seemed nice too, even if she was like him and didn't know anything of the Human World. Best not to dwell on that, she seemed powerful too so that meant their odds were increasing and... that guy. Angin's mood decidedly dropped as he remembered the long-haired jerk he'd encountered before, that guy...

Move on! No focusing on the snake guy while he tried to find the notebook.

Finding a conveniently shadey tree, Angin leant against the trunk as he closed his eyes and gently cupped his hands below his naval. Meditation, it wasn't just for spiritual gurus on TV, it was genuinely helpful for channeling Spirit energy if you knew what you were doing. Humming softly to himself, Angin felt his energy glow and expand as he took in all of his surroundings. He felt the energy of living people flicker on like a series of light-bulbs as his mind expanded outwards, he was looking for some sign of ghosts or spirit energy that wasn't attached to someone but... he could feel something. He opened his eyes and frowned, it wasn't clear but there was... something here. Turns out Akiko actually did have some kind of supernatural encounter here. Folding his arms decidedly, Angin strolled through the campus grounds, looked like he'd need to find the location of the notebook theft before he could work out anything else. What a pain...

'You're doing it wrong.'

Speaking of the snake guy, Rikuto had been occupying that particular tree for some time, tracking Angin's Reiki as he had meandered about the campus. Naturally he had followed in the interest of annoying his team-mate, as he suspected that Angin was here for much the same reason that he was. There was something inhuman prowling about which Rikuto meant to find and devour before it did just that to some unlucky student. He could sense malevolence from it, but could not properly pin it down himself, upon feeling that Angin had drawn close he'd hatched a plan to draw and entrap the presence, whatever it was. He had gone just ahead of Angin in order to 'appear' around the next corner the young Human rounded, having spoke just as Angin reached him, he turned to him and gave a sly smile.

'You can't locate this apparition just by looking for it, you have to let it come to you.' Standing up from the wall he was leaning against, he kept his arms crossed, facing Angin side on. 'All told I'd much rather catch it by myself, but whatever this thing is it's avoiding my Yoki like the plague.' More than once Rikuto had pursued... whatever he was chasing only to have it drop completely off of his senses when he started to grow close. In its shenanigans the creature hadn't committed to any actual violence, from what he'd heard it had made itself a nuisance and frankly he wasn't about to give it the chance at anything more. 'It would seem it has a particular preference for terrorizing humans, so we can use you to draw it more effectively, of course you're more suited to the decoy role anyway as you have a greater energy reserve to start with.'

He explained all of this while assuming Angin's cooperation. Though he knew Angin didn't particularly like him, he had after all made quite the fool of the young fighter, he trusted that the lad's rather black and white moral compass would lead him towards cooperating with his team-mate to be on this occasion. There were bigger things than just the two of them to consider.

Rounding a corner to run into Rikuto was one of those things that Angin was beginning to dread out of his team, he jumped back and fell in a heap at his appearance managing to barely supress a scream of surprise. It felt like whenever Rikuto turned up it was always out of nowhere, so with a careful getting to his feet and attempting to maintain his dignity Angin glowered a little at the creepy snake guy before listening to what he had to say, not sure what he'd meant by "You're doing it wrong"

He heard the plan about using himself as a decoy and tilted his head to one side, his gut instinct was a flat refusal rather than work with Rikuto but what common sense he had started to kick in and pointed out how it'd be easier to find the guy working together then it would working apart. That, and if the guy had any kind of super speed he'd never be able to keep up but the snake guy was a lot faster than he was... there was only one logical, sensible choice here as much as he hated to admit it.

"Alright, I guess this is a... team-building exercise, or something. But if it's avoiding your Yoki, I don't think it'll just come waltzing up to try and scare me, I'm not that good at repressing my Reiki so I kind of stand out. We can give it a shot, but first I wanna look for clues." Angin was stroking his chin now as he approached the area that was allegedly where Akiko had lost her notebook. It looked like an outside lunch area, a few tables and chairs, a trashcan to one side and a couple of posters stuck to the wall talking about school events in Kanji that Angin couldn't read. Examining things to try and work out what could have happened, Angin thought he'd try and break the ice with Rikuto. It was a nice day, relatively sunny and he realised that apart from the fact he was faster than him and liked to steal swords. And liked to put his head into tables when he ignored him. Jerk. But apart from that, he didn't actually know much about him. He should probably make an effort to create a connection.

"So, uhh, I come from an Island of Psychics. I'm fairly new to the Human World, newer to the whole 'Demon' thing but I'd say I'm adjusting. I bodyguard for a rich family and that's why I'm trying to find the guy we're looking for. How about you?" Angin was waiting for an answer when he saw the smudges on a poster. He couldn't read the text so he wasn't overly interested in what it said but he could see dark oily marks that looked a lot like it could be part of a handprint. It could be nothing, but from the angle it'd be pretty hard for a normal person to put the mark there. He turned to shout to his team-mate
"Hey, I found a hand-print!"

Rikuto could not help but roll his eyes at the words 'team building,' it hadn't seemed to sink in that he was only going to cooperate with them as far as was absolutely necessary, on the bright side though it seemed that he'd sufficiently hammered home the fact that attempting to catch... whatever it was alone was a futile effort. 'If you take that attitude you'll never be any good at anything. Think of it as a training exercise, repress the sum of your Reiki, but leak a little out steadily. It'll help with your fine control in the future, be damned useful in the Dark Tournament too, stop you tiring yourself out. Don't do it here though, we should find a secluded spot first.' Rikuto was likewise looking around for anything suspicious, not as though he expected to turn anything up unless the spectre or whatever wanted them to. This kind of creature was methodical and patient.

Rikuto was largely uninterested in what Angin had to say, though the fact that he was body-guarding for a wealthy family explained who the kid with him at the museum had been. It rather explained what he was doing on campus as well, amongst the swirling rumours of paranormal activity he'd heard was one account that the last Human the apparition had visited itself upon was the heir to some family of bigwigs. He suspected though that Angin's damnable moral compass had equal parts to do with why he was conducting an investigation. Following his compatriot's attempt to make nice, Rikuto hummed in contemplation before making his reply. 'Well as you may or may not be aware, my name's Kin, I'm a Demon and everyone I've ever known or cared about is dead.' That ought to be enough to ward him off, or at least he thought so. He'd completed his statement with a matter of factness which would have communicated to anyone else that the matter was no longer up for discussion. Of course Angin wasn't just anyone and as such Rikuto was perfectly willing to reinforce his point with gross applications of violence where necessary.

Thankfully Angin had located a trace sign of whatever horrific and hellish malady they were pursuing and seemed more concerned with that than establishing a veneer of civility between them. 'Congratulations,' Rikuto droned as he waltzed not to quickly to join him, 'what do you want a pat on the h-- well... that's not normal.' Reaching up to the poster Rikuto tore it away with a swift jarring of his arm to look at whatever lay behind. Even if it was nothing the poster itself was probably significant in its content or placement. Better to err on the side of prudence.

Angin hadn't said anything about the fine control thing, he was well aware his power to modulate power output was actually pretty dang good, his problem was he constantly radiated a reasonable amount of energy so he was strong and fast. It was like asking someone with massive paranoia to 'just chill out and stop thinking about it', he couldn't relax and stop charging his muscles any more than he could stop breathing for long periods of time. Still, it meant the snake demon DID care something for him he noted brightly, if he wanted him to get better. Relentless optimism strikes again, and it truly is relentless since Angin was now thinking that he may've been too harsh on the snake demon. Maybe he was nicer than he let on.

Angin listened to when he said his name was Kin but it only really sunk in when he was talking about what he'd found that everyone Kin had known had died. The snake demon was examining the poster after he ripped it off when if he glanced towards Angin he would see a blubbering man with tears streaming down his face
"That's so s-s-saaaaad" The genuine sniffling and streams of tears were somehow more unsettling than a real person crying "E-everyone you care about died... AHHHHH! KIIIIN! It's OK! I'm here for you, buddy, give me a huuug!" Angin went in for a hug, his arms swishing through the air and tumbling to the floor as Kin evaded the move ((OOC: permission from Rikuto for that slight character control)). Getting up, still sniffling slightly he looked at where the poster had been and saw a strange mark, more black oil. He frowned, there seemed to be a trail leading round the corner, a particularly gross and sticky trail but still a trail. Shrugging, Angin started following it hoping that Kin would follow him.

"Hey, so is Kin like a normal demon name? I dunno, I always figured REAL demons would have weird names, I dunno why, all the half-demons I've met had regular Japanese names." Angin was kind of aware that he really wasn't one to talk with HIS name, it didn't even translate properly so it was always giving people trouble. Angin was still engrossed in his curiousity when he realised that the trail of black oily residue lead down from their current position. They looked like they were near a dorm-building, the oily black hand print seemed to go down through a tiny window big enough for a notebook but way too small for either him or Rikuto. It took Angin a minute to look at the snake guy and think whether or not he could maybe bend through it, but it looks too thin, only about as thin as a DVD case.

"We're going to have to find this spot inside the building..." Angin looked hesitant, not sure that they'd find it too easily. Snapping his fingers with an idea, he grabbed a clumpful of turf and charged it, blue light flickering along the clod of dirt as he tossed it through the window. He nodded
"There! Now we just need to find something that looks like my Reiki inside and we can continue the trail, simple" Angin had somehow forgotten about the plan for him to be bait and strolled briskly round to the front of the building, relatively oblivious to the fact someone was watching him... No sooner had he entered the building then a young man with a blue blazer affronted him and shouted
"Who are you two?! Why are you wandering around the bulding?!"
"Ummmmm" Angin was now trying to think of an acceptable lie.

Yep. That just happened.
Rikuto's eyes widened at the sight of a sniffling and wailing Angin, but had just about enough presence of mind to weave away from his grasp lest he suffer an impromptu hug. 'Try to hug me again and I'll personally make certain your genetic line doesn't continue,' he grumbled as his smoothed down his shirt, glancing at Angin to see the same trail the young man observed. He followed about a foot behind Angin so as to watch for danger... and for hugs, thankfully the second did not come but he felt increasingly like a mouse following the odour of cheese. Though he wasn't about to try another hug, Angin still seemed to be driving at getting to know him. Though he didn't appreciate the emphasis on 'real' demons, he supposed kicking Angin in the nuts and walking off wouldn't be conducive to the 'team building' aspect... and there would be plenty of time to kick him all over later on. It was with some hesitation that he swallowed the knot which had quickly closed about his throat and answered. 'My wife gave it to me.' He stopped momentarily, his eyes on Angin to make sure another hug wasn't coming and to meet it with a knee to the face if it was.

'And what does that mean? Would you prefer 'His Swift Impetuous Male Augustness?' Truth is, old and well travelled as I am, I probably have a name in just about every language. Kin's for the colour of my eyes and Kushinada was a sort of in joke between us.' Upon coming to the 'end' of the trail and seeing the look which Angin shot from the tiny gap towards him Rikuto frowned. 'Yeah, stop thinking what you're thinking.' He was rather impressed with Angin's method of leaving a marker for them to locate, which proved that he did indeed have a brain somewhere in there. He did however have one qualm with how they'd dealt with the problem, one which he voiced as they made for the front of the building.

'Couldn't you just have like, punched through the wall or something?' He didn't much care for the answer, truth be told even if he couldn't have it would have been incredibly fun to watch. Just the image of Angin clutching his knuckles and wringing his hands in frustration and impotence was enough to make Rikuto smile as he entered the building behind Angin, passed him and swatted at the person who had accosted him. He didn't even break his stride, he simply shot out his hand, looking to land a blow to just the right nerve cluster in order to render the man unconscious and no longer quite so annoying. Angin would complain about how he couldn't just go swanning around batting people into extended periods of unconsciousness, but if he was lucky then his Human companion would be perturbed enough to drop his guard enough to be rendered unconscious and a great deal less annoying.

Angin went quiet as soon as he heard Rikuto mention his wife had given him his name. Since he'd earlier mentioned how everyone he knew and cared about had died it didn't take much imagination to work out what that had meant. He didn't say anything even as Rikuto asked if he'd prefer 'His Swift Impetuous Male Augustness' and resisted the urge to nod because seriously, how good would that name be? Still he didn't say anything about Rikuto's story, he was a little envious in a way, he'd never had anyone care about him enough to name him. He sometimes considered making up a new one for himself but he liked his name, even if it came from his family. After tossing the dirt through the tiny window, Angin heard as Rikuto offered up a far easier option. Angin shrugged
"Repairing or replacing walls is expensive, Kin" it wasn't that he couldn't do it, he was pretty sure he could actually have kicked through a good chunk of the building but if his knowledge of architecture meant anything, he could easily bring the whole building down that way if he hit a lode-bearing wall. Basically, he wasn't willing to destroy chunks of school just for the the easiness of finding this guy who, as far as Angin was concerned, was just a petty criminal.

He was about to explain himself when he watched the guy get knocked unconscious by Rikuto, his eyes widened in shock and rapidly bowing over the fallen body.
"Sorry! We're sorry! We're really, really sorry!" before showing his usual exasperated face that was midway between a pout and anger. Rikuto's disregard for people and their states of consciousness was starting to get on his nerves. Still, he could sense his energy clump and saw the stairs leading down to it. Grabbing hold of the bannister, he twisted himself over it in a modified cartwheel and landed neatly on the last step. He jogged down the surprisingly empty corridor and found the room they needed. He tried the lock, found it was indeed locked and debated briefly the best way to break it with minimal damage. Nodding, he charged the door handle with spirit energy before smacking it with his palm and sending it shooting into the room beyond. Inventive! He pushed open the door and slipped inside, examining the boiler room which must've supplied heat to the entire building.

He found the black oily mark he'd been following and after a moment's thought sniffed it. It stank to high heaven of something indescribable and greasy. Wincing somewhat, he looked at the trail and blinked somewhat. It lead back down the corridor, frowning he stepped outside and glanced down the hallway. It went all the way back to the stairs. But the trail was old surely? So that didn't neccessarily mean... and it was about here Angin actively tried looking for higher than average Spirit Energy. There was a human signal above them. He groaned and rubbed the bridge of his nose even as he felt the rumble of oil as spectral blue arms began to sprout from the walls.

"Attack me will you? Regret your decision in the after-life, courtesy of my Phantom Limb!" The student who Rikuto had just knocked out was now standing, shrouded in ghostly blue arms as more of them sprouted from the walls. These ones had particularly sharp clawed fingers and were particularly keen on attacking Angin and Rikuto. One of them swiped at Rikuto, faster than they looked too, while another lanced up to intercept which ever way he dodged. Angin had his own problems to worry about as he was likewise attacked, enclosed space was not their friend for this...

((OOC: Dun-dun-DUUUN! There's more behind this but this is the first fight :3 Go Team Kusanagi!))

'He'll be fine,' Rikuto assured his partner as Angin was busy apologising profusely to the now prone man. 'He wont die... they don't usually die.' He was by that point, fairly certain of the fact, but phrasing it in such as way as to infuriate Angin was just too good to pass up. As they followed the emissions of Angin's Reiki he allowed the young man to overtake him and as he took the stairs down in the conventional manner he had already noticed the black trail as they entered the boiler room. He smiled to himself as he felt the stirring of Reiki above them and as it descended to join them. He had in fact turned towards the door when the student elected to join them.

'My, my... and here I thought that I had hit you harder than that. It's good to know that you're no scrub, though you'll never beat even the lowest of Demons with a paltry technique like this.' Crossing his arms in front of him Rikuto began to release his Yoki to permeate the air around him, making it seem heavy and inhospitable to any who were unlucky enough to be therein. 'Rin Pyo To Sha Kai Jin Retsu Zai Zen!' Casting his arms out, Rikuto released a sudden burst of Yoki, dispersing the spectral hands directly around him, including the two which had made to assault him, dropping his hands again he strode slowly but confidently towards the Human, a wicked smirk settling over his features. With their eyes locked the foolish Human would see that Rikuto's pupils had reverted to the slitted ones of a serpent. 'These things might be all well and good for terrorising schoolgirls, but not this guy. Even weakened by this infernal binding curse, your puny Reiki is no match for my Yoki. I was getting into a good enough mood to let you off with a beating, but your arrogance annoys me.'

He paused mid-step, glanced back at Angin, then to the student, then back to Angin. 'On second thought, this'll be boring if we both go at him. Shoot for it?' He held out his hand towards Angin, cycling it through Rock, Paper, Scissors until he noticed the Phantom Limb directly to his left was doing the same, upon which he used his free arm to punch it back into the wall where it had sprung out. 'Goddamn smartass.'

Angin swerved dramatically to avoid the grasping hands as they came out of the air for him, managing to do a backward flip motion with one leg forward and another bent before adopting a low stance, ready to fight them on even terms. When Rikuto released a wave of Yoki. It gave Angin a faint sensation of unease but he was still able to focus himself enough to show little reaction. While it was strong he was still powerful enough to keep his bearings which is more than could be said for the master of the Phantom Limb who seemed to be cowering in a corner now at the terrifying sight of Rikuto's Yoki. A few hands remained, looking confused while their master cowered on the floor. He seemed sure his death was nigh until Rikuto turned to Angin and proposed a far more reasonable way to decide who dealt with the (at this point reasonably dealt with) purveyor of phantom limbs. Angin nodded at the proposal, scared or not, he still needed to get Akiko's journal back.

"Alright, Janken it is. Just don't super speed it to cheat or anything!" He warned, and after a brief moment shook his hand and declared "Jan Ken PON!" throwing down paper and seeing scissors on the other side, frustrated he repeated the procedure two or three times at high speed but always with the same result. "Awww man, I can't believe I lost I- wait, was your hand always blue?" staring at the spectral blue hand (which only had two clawed fingers) now waving at him, Angin politely waved back and turned back to Rikuto so they could actually do this and noticed a blue blazered figure escaping up the staircase.
"We should probably catch him..."

As if realising he'd been spotted, the student slammed his hand to the staircase and a wave of hands erupted down the corridor, sweeping towards them like a clawed grinder. While Rikuto could handle it, Angin felt the urge to be useful as he rummaged in his pocket and produced a small pebble. He carried two or three around with him now after the fight with Rando and after charging it slightly, hurled it dead centre of the hands and pierced straight through them. It wasn't a Spirit Gun but it was the best he could do with what he had and cleared the path
"Umm, you're faster so you should probably get after him, I'll catch up. Don't kill him please." Angin didn't particularly want to deal with a dead body, especially not on campus. He ran towards the stairs, well aware that Rikuto would get past him far quicker.

Emerging outside, the phantom limb master was met by a girl who looked around 12 with long black hair and a strange darker version of a Shrine Maiden's outfit, the red trousers a slightly off shade and the white robe stained in odd places a dark grey.
"What's the matter Shintaro?" She asked, her head tilting very slowly to the side as she asked the question. Shintaro panted and spluttered
"Two people, one of them had Yoki like yours, O Mistress he-" Cut off by a slice, Shintaro gurgled for a moment before his head fell from his body and his mistress clicked her tongue in annoyance.
"To compare this to my energy... It's barely D-Class, it took me a long to get back to the C-rank." As if to prove the point, she released a wave of energy like a knife that sliced through the building. It was meant to hit as Rikuto and Angin neared the top, if Rikuto moved faster he'd be in front and Angin behind if not it'd likely be the other way round. Angin for his part hit the deck as the golden Yoki sliced past him and got up hesitantly. This felt a lot like Rando now
"Kin? We may need to be more careful now"
"It seems you caught my lackey in action, consider him taken care of" shouted the demon now "I've decided to avoid you no longer, you are but a shadow of your former self after all. It's me, Shabara, I've returned for your head!" As if to punctuate this she emitted fearsome Yoki and began glowering through the building. Angin, for one, was set to limit collateral damage and burst out through the main doors, ready for more fighting when he saw Shintaro's headless body. He may have been a nuisance, but he didn't deserve that.

Roaring, Angin dived towards Shabara and was met by another golden crescent intended to slice him in half. Charging his hands, Angin tried to catch it but didn't quite realise the force behind it. Rocketting backwards, he crashed through the building anew and managed to emerge back first through the wall he'd originally spared for fear it was lode-bearing (turned out it wasn't apparently) rolling to a stop on the grass. His hands weren't cut but the sheer force of that. They needed a plan and... and he'd left Rikuto alone. Taking the long way round, he sprinted to meet up with them again...

Yep. That just happened.
At the inquiry about whether or not his hand had always been blue Rikuto cleared his throat loudly, simply shaking his head at Angin's idiocy. His eyes whipped around to the retreating Human and he was preparing another burst of Yoki in order to deal with the wave of Phantom Limbs he which had been sent against them, but Angin its seemed had it handled. In all honesty he was becoming more and more impressed by the young Human as much as he was a perennial annoyance. As Angin suggested he lead the pursuit Rikuto was already ahead of him. As such he was almost to the doors when the wave of Yoki sliced in towards him, not halting or even slowing he dropped to his knees to slide nimbly under it before pushing himself up and bursting through the doors. He landed half crouched outside the building, his eyes snapping between the decapitated body and... No, that's impossible, it can't be. It can't be!'

Though he was fully prepared to deal with an attack upon himself there was little he could do to prevent Angin doing something stupid and something stupid he did, only to be blown through a wall right after. Stooping, he retrieved Shintaro's head, looking into his partially rolled back eyes as he held it in one hand. 'Poor, sweet Shabara. You always had such a liking for your twisted, broken little toys.' Without warning he tossed the dismembered head at the other Demon only for it to be severed cleanly in half by another arc of golden Yoki. 'While it is true that in my current state of being it would be entirely possible for you to overpower me, you are simply not the sort of person that could defeat me... you must know this better than anyone.' Pausing to lick the blood from his hand, he seemed not at all intimidated by the superior Yoki which he now faced down. There was of course a reason for this.

He was about to continue when he was quite literally cut off by a subsequent blade of Yoki which had apparently sliced clear through him before his form flickered into nothingness, revealing itself as an after image. The real Rikuto had moved behind her, leaning nonchalantly in the shadow of a nearby tree, his aim to move her attention from the building and where he supposed Angin would now be. 'My, my, such violence. Have you no love for your captain, your king, your god?' He knew such talk would undoubtedly rile Shabara up and when Demons got riled up they invariably made mistakes, it was their nature after all. From there on he could let Angin choose his opening, or if that didn't work out he could find his own after Shabara spent all her Yoki on attacks that he would simply evade.
