*Chucking the last bit of dirty straw into the cart, he puts the pitchfork he'd been using back in its place and stretches, pressing his fists into his lower back and groaning slightly at the tightness in the muscles. Mucking had always been a bit of a rough task, but Mrs. Ashland had once again been sneaking apples to the horses, and that made it both more difficult, and particularly unpleasant. He smirks to himself, shaking his head at having caught his employer once again slipping the treats to the animals. He wouldn't try to stop her from treating the horses, because he found it rather amusing that she believed herself so stealthy in the act, but he did try to warn her now and then about the effect the fruits could have on them, when offered too often. Wiping a bit of sweat from his brow, he rubs his hands together and looks around to make sure he'd spread the fresh straw evenly, before turning and walking out of the stable, heading down the path that leads to his cottage with thoughts of a light dinner in his head. Just as he reaches the turn in the path, though, he sees none other than Mrs. Ashland herself walking towards him, evidently headed in the direction of the stables. He stops to wait for her, giving her a polite smile and inclining his head respectfully as she approaches.* Good evenin', Ma'am. Lovely day, aye? *She has to lean her head back to look up at him, and smiles.* "Yes, it is. On your way home?" *He nods.* I was, but if ye're headin' to the stables, I'd be glad to join ye, if ye're needin' anythin'. *Nodding her head, she resumes walking, and he falls into step beside her, heading back to the barn he had just left.* "I'd like to take Timothy out for a bit, if you wouldn't mind tacking him for me. And please use the men's saddle." *He presses his lips into a thin line when she requests the saddle, but nods, casting a quick glance at Timothy as they reach the stable and she moves to greet the horse with a kiss on his nose.* As ye wish, Mrs. Ashland, but are ye sure ye don't want the ladies'? 'Tis only proper, 'n I imagine a bit more comfortable for ye... *Patting Timothy's head, she turns to look at him, her smile still in place but her expression serious.* "Yes, I'm sure. I'll be fine, Ethan." *Bowing slightly at the waist, he turns and heads for the tack room, waiting until she can't see his face before rolling his eyes. Grabbing the reins and the men's saddle, he shakes his head and mumbles under his breath.* Ridin' like a man...'tis not ladylike at all. Me mam would be havin' me hide for allowin' this, if she knew... *He hears her giggle as he returns and has a feeling she'd heard him, but says nothing as he opens Timothy's stall and walks in, carefully preparing the horse for the evening ride. As he settles the saddle into place, he looks over at Mrs. Ashland and gives her a half-smile.* I'd taken Astrid out for a bit of a go the other day, she'd done quite well. She's seemin' to be gettin' along nicely now. *Adjusting the straps of the saddle, he recalls the young woman he'd seen standing on the path, watching him with Astrid before rushing off in the direction of the main house, and curiosity gets the better of him.* Caught sight of a young lass, as well. Looked to be headin' from the cottage by me own. I'd not been thinkin' 'twas anyone livin' there? *She seems pleased to hear that Astrid is adjusting to her new home, and looks up at him as he mentions the young woman, nodding.* "That would be Ivy. She's just moved in, she's going to be working in the house for us, as the head cook. She's a lovely young woman, but she's had quite a bit of a hard time as of late, which is too bad. I'm hoping she can start over here." *Adjusting the reins, he nods his head vaguely.* Ivy, eh? 'Tis a lovely name. I'd not had the chance to be gettin' a good look at her, she'd pinked up 'n hurried off before I could, for some reason. *Shaking his head, he frowns slightly.* Aye, too bad. Ye feel free to be lettin' her know I'm about, if she's needin' any assistance. *Patting Timothy on the side of the neck, he hands the reins to her, smiling again.* He's all set for ye, Ma'am. I'm fairly certain he's anxious for a good run. *Taking the reins from him with a smile, she laughs softly.* "I'm sure he is, too. Thank you, Ethan." *He watches her as she leads Timothy outside and mounts him easily, settling into the saddle and turning to call out to him.* "Go home and relax. I'll be back in an hour or so, if you could have one of the stable boys here to settle him in for the night." *Without waiting for a reply, she nudges Timothy's sides gently with her heels and heads off towards the fields. Watching her retreat, he shakes his head again at her insistence on using the men's saddle.* 'Tis just not ladylike... *Heaving a sigh, he nods at Astrid and Misty before walking back out of the stable, catching Jared, one of the more helpful, hard-working stablehands, and asking him to be available to tend to Timothy upon Mrs. Ashland's return. Jared agrees, and he thanks him, once again thinking of what he'd like to eat as he heads down the path towards his cottage.* |

*She had just gotten Nathan bathed and in bed for the night when she decided to make some coffee. She set the pot onto the stove and went about cleaning up the monstrous mess he'd created with his mashed noodles and carrots. She giggled to herself as she wiped up the floor and the wall next to his highchair. Her little man was getting so big. He was crawling all over the place and sitting up on his own. She'd had to set up his playpen in her room until she can transform the small room off of the sitting room into a bedroom for him. She'd do that tomorrow. She had 2 more days until she was to begin her duties in the kitchen at the main house. She could smell the unmistakable aroma of fresh coffee filling the house and she knew it was ready. She poured herself a cup and added her cream and sugar. She'd always preferred coffee to tea, but she had to add cream and sugar to it. If she was drinking tea, she would add only a little honey. If she was drinking tea it was also a good sign that she wasn't feeling well. She always knew when she was coming down with something because she'd crave tea. Turning the stove down to a low flame to keep it warm, she checked on Nathan one more time before taking her coffee outside to get some fresh air. It was still very early in the Spring, but it was wonderfully mild out. She sat on her front steps and sipped her coffee, looking over at the small bit of yard she had. She planned on planting some roses along the fence line on her next day off. It was a pretty little yard. She'd never been allowed to do any of the gardening when she was married. She'd try, but Thomas would chide her about it* "We have servants for that, you really should learn to carry yourself properly. No wife of mine will be running around playing in the dirt." *She cringed when she thought back to her marriage. As big of a mistake as it was, and as badly as he'd hurt her, she'd do it all again because of her little boy. He was the bright spot of her day and the center of her world. She fought hard for him too. Her pregnancy had been difficult and they'd thought at least twice that she'd loose him, but she struggled and hung on. He came earlier than he should have but he was here and he was healthy. It was that reason that the judge gave her custody of him in the divorce. She'd agreed to keep the real reason he'd left her a secret as long as he didn't try to take her son. He agreed and he didn't fight the court about it. he knew he'd be imprisoned if they found out he'd left her to be with another man. The thought of it made her shudder. Shaking her head, she clears her head of the negative thoughts and sips her coffee, looking up when she hears footsteps and soft whistling walking past her gate* |

*Strolling towards his cottage, his hands shoved into his pockets and his mind roaming, trying to remember what all he has available to make for a light dinner, he whistles to himself as he walks. As he makes his way along the path, he approaches the entrance to the cottage Mrs. Ashland had said the young lady, Ivy, had moved into, and debates stopping by to see if she's there, so he can introduce himself. It isn't something he normally does, going out of his way to make his presence known, but she's his neighbor, and it would only be polite to offer his assistance if she's ever needing it, for as long as he decides to stay in Stonewick. He stops in his tracks when he sees her sitting on the front steps of the cottage, both surprised and suddenly feeling shy. He's never been good with meeting people, but the option of simply walking by and pretending he hadn't seen her there is far too impolite to even consider. She looks to be a bit lost in her thoughts, so he keeps his voice somewhat low so he doesn't startle her as he offers his typical half-smile and inclines his head respectfully.* A good evenin' to ye, Ma'am. |

*She studies him for a moment, recognizing him as the man she saw on the horse the other night. She stands but doesn't move off of the steps. He was Irish? He sounded Irish. She'd only ever known one Irish person in her life and that was Old Widow MacCorrmack back home. She'd passed away years ago* Hello... *She stands on the steps watching him as he quickly pulls his hands out of his pockets and wipes them on his trousers. He seems shy almost. She was almost unsure what more to say. She didn't know who he was and she certainly didn't feel comfortable giving out any information about herself. Not with Thomas's 'spies' all over the town* |

*He remains where he's standing, but pulls his hands out of his pockets, quickly brushing his palms over his trousers.* Me name's Ethan, Miss. Ethan Callahan. I'm livin' in the cottage beyond ye'rs, there. *Lifting one hand, he points in the direction of his cottage, quickly dropping his arm to his side when he sees his hand shaking slightly. His sisters always teased him about his shyness, and now, he's risking making a fool out of himself because of it. Looking back over at her, he sees her watching him, almost scrutinizing him. Reaching up to scratch the back of his head, he grins faintly again.* Me apologies for the interruption, lass, I'd not meant to be disturbin' ye. I'd just thought 'twould be polite to be introducin' meself to ye, seein' as we're neighbors now, 'n all... |

*Realizing now that he isn't one of her ex-husband's henchmen, she walks down the steps and towards him, holding out her hand* I'm Ivy. Ivy Kelly. I'm the new head cook at the main house. What do you do here? *She had been told that the stable manager lived next to her. And she had also assumed it would be an older man, only because the stable manager at her last job had been an older man. And a nasty cranky one at that. This one however, doesn't seem to be too nasty or cranky. Surely he couldn't be the manager. He looked more like a stable boy* |

*He feels his cheeks flush slightly and he reaches up to scratch the back of his head again, unsure whether it would be wise to tell her he already knows what her position at the house is. It wasn't entirely proper of him to have asked Mrs. Ashland about her, and if she found out about it, it might make her uncomfortable. Deciding against it, he clears his throat and gestures with his head towards the stables.* I'm the stable manager, lass. I tend the horses for the Ashlands, 'n keep the boys in line. *He can see the mild surprise on her face, and he lifts a shoulder in a half-shrug. He knows he's young for such a position; even after working here for a few months, he's still surprised himself that Mrs. Ashland had given it to him.* I've been workin' with horses me whole life. 'Twas me years of experience that had Mrs. Ashland offerin' me the job when I'd come seekin' work as a farmhand. *Tucking his thumbs into the pockets of his trousers, he shifts into a more comfortable stance and raises an eyebrow at her, smiling kindly.* Do ye enjoy ridin'? |

*She shakes her head and grips her coffee cup. She tells him she hasn't been on a horse since she was a child, but she doesn't tell him it was because she was thrown from one at the age of 8 years old. It had broken her arm and left her unconscious for 4 days. She still doesn't remember the incident, but it's not stopped her fear of horses from surfacing every time one is near. She'd felt it the other night when she first saw him on his animal and there were at least a good 20 feet between them* I never had the time working at my last job and I never had the time when... *she trails off, lost for a minute, then shakes back to reality* I'm sorry. How long have you been here? I mean working here, at the estate? |

*His eyebrow lifts a tiny bit more as her voice trails off, but he decides not to question it, or the distant look that forms briefly in her eyes. He waves off her apology with another kind smile.* No worries, lass. I've only been here the last few months. I'd been roamin' about for quite a while before findin' meself in Stonewick to find work. Mrs. Ashland hired me on 'n gave me a cottage of me own, so here I be. *Lifting a shoulder in another half-shrug, he purses his lips a little.* I wasn't entirely certain at first whether to be acceptin' the job, but I'm fairly pleased I did. 'Tis me favorite kind of work, 'n havin' a house to be livin' in rather than bunkin' with the stable boys is a nice change. *Realizing he's rambling, he shakes his head quickly, giving her a shy grin.* I'm sorry, I'd not meant to be goin' on so. Are ye settlin' in well? |

*She smiles at him* She's a sweet woman. I've known her for sometime. She asked me to come work in her kitchen here and it's a step up from what I did at at the last house I worked at. I needed to take it. It's beautiful land here. *She looks over at the pasture and smiles again, sipping her coffee* It is a bit overwhelming, I only had a room back at my old employ. Now I have a whole house and I'm having trouble finding where to start. It's a lot of space... |

*He watches her for a long moment before turning to follow her gaze, nodding.* Aye, I'm understandin' what ye're meanin', Ma'am. I'm used to havin' nothin' more than a bed to be sleepin' in, 'n a spot to be storin' me trunk 'n suitcase, save for when I've gone home for a visit. I've an entire room with nothin' more than an old writin' desk. *Looking back at her, he grins.* 'N ye're right about the scenery here. 'Tis indeed a lovely sight. *He realizes his statement could be taken to mean more than the land, and flushes slightly, clearing his throat and scratching the back of his neck, scrambling to change the subject.* Workin' in the kitchen, eh? I confess meself fairly surprised Mrs. Ashland set ye up way out here, instead of in the main house, with the others. If I'm to be honest, when I'd first seen ye, I'd pegged ye for family or somethin'. |

She clears her throat and realizes she's not been very neighborly to him* Would you like to come in for some coffee? I need some more. *She smiles as she closes the gate back up and leads him inside. First to the kitchen, where she makes him a cup of the hot coffee* It's no imposition at all. We're going to be neighbors, we should get to know each other at some point, right? Unless you want me to be that cranky neighbor that's always complaining about your trees blooming over my fence? *She giggles and decides that she likes the sound of his laugh. *She pours herself some more coffee and mixes in her sugar and cream, smiling as she speaks* I'd be comfortable anywhere but it's not me I needed the cottage for. There wouldn't have been enough room in a servant's room for the both of us. *She sips her coffee, deciding that if he was to be her neighbor, he might as well know about Nathan. *He blinks in surprise as her words sink in, and he narrowly avoids spluttering his coffee as his eyes quickly snap around the room, looking for evidence of another inhabitant. He sees no signs of a man's boots or coat anywhere near the door, but barely registers it, knowing it doesn't mean that her husband isn't due to walk in at any given moment. His cheeks redden slightly, almost guiltily, and he sets his cup down on the table with a somewhat shaky hand.* Of course, Miss Ivy. I reckon ye need plenty o' room to be raisin' a family. I've two older sisters meself, 'n our home was barely big enough to be containin' some of our shenanigans, growin' up. |

I have a brother but he lives with my mum back home. Come with me. *She sets her coffee cup down and takes him through the house and to the door of her bedroom. His brow furrows as he leans over slightly to look down at the sleeping baby, a soft smile touching his mouth at the peaceful sight. His expression slowly darkens, though, as her words register and he looks back up at her in surprise.* No husband? *Glancing back down at the baby, he stands up straight and tightens his jaw, his face twisting into a look of disgust.* No husband, and a wee babe to be raisin' on ye'r own? *He shakes his head, frowning.* What sort of manky scab would be doin' that to a lady? |

*She shakes her head, feeling nervous though she can't explain why. He has a right to know if he's going to be her neighbor. And she certainly didn't want him thinking she was a strumpet that has an out of wedlock child. She walks back towards the kitchen and sits down at the table, her hands around her coffee mug* I was married. I'm not anymore. Kelly is my maiden name. My married name is Hanniger. I don't use my married name, though by law, it's still my legal name. Thomas, my ex-husband, divorced me not very long ago. *She doesn't tell him why, not wanting to bring up such a sorted story* |

*Still frowning, he follows her back into the kitchen and sits across from her, picking up his cup and taking another sip of the coffee. Setting the cup down and wrapping his hands around it loosely, he purses his lips and watches her carefully, keeping his voice steady and low despite the irritation he feels towards the cad that is her ex-husband, even though he's never even met the man. He shakes his head again with a light sigh.* Well, if ye were to be askin' me, Ma'am, I'd be sayin' ye'r better off without some gollier like that shadowin' ye'r doorstep. 'Tis not excusin' whatever he's done to ye or ye'r boy, but ye're seemin' like a strong lady, 'n ye're better off without him, if I may so bold as to be sayin' so. *Still scowling, he looks down at his cup and mumbles softly* Ye're deservin' better than that. |

*She gets up and brings the coffee pot from the stove and sets it on a trivet on the table. She pours a little more for them both and looks at him* When we were married he was a good husband. Very attentive, very caring, everything I wanted. But he's a notorious flirt. He always has been. I made the mistake of thinking marriage would change him. It didn't. And...well....let's just say that a wife and a baby didn't leave him the kind of free time he cared for. *She gets back up and goes over to the cupboard and removes a tin of biscuits be baked earlier that day. She takes them over and puts them on the table but not before handing him one as she sits back down* Thomas comes from money. A lot of it. I used some of that money to buy a building and turned it into the bakery in the village. I own it. We had the money to do that. I bought an old dilapidated building and built it from the ground up. But soon his money was cut off. His parents got tired of his ways and disowned him. he refused to work and so I had to. We had money coming in from the business, but it was just getting off the ground so it wasn't enough. So I found a job at one of the other estates as a kitchen maid. But then he left. *sadness creeps across her face. Not at his leaving but at the hardship it forced upon her and Nathan* The money was good, but not enough and I had no where to go, Then Helen....Mrs. Ashland, got this estate and asked me to come work here as head cook. I jumped at it. It's a better life for us. Soon, being cramped up in a small room in the attic of a house isn't going to work well. He's only five months old, but soon he'll be moving around. He's already sitting up and crawling. *She finishes her story and sits quietly for a few minutes before clearing her throat* So tell me, Mr Callahan, are you married? *She assumes he is to be living in a cottage and not in the stable block with the other hands. He seemed to be a very genuine man. Kind and polite* |

*He takes the biscuit and sets it on the table beside his cup, adding a spoon of sugar to the coffee and stirring it slowly as he listens to her. Her words upset him, hearing about a man not only treating a woman so crudely, but turning his back on his wife and child, as well. He picks up the biscuit, taking a small bite and enjoying the flavor immensely, his eyes rolling slightly in pleasure; he can tell she is certainly skilled at baking. He quickly regains his composure and sets it back down, looking back at her.* When I was a lad, me da used to say to me, 'Ethan, any male can be marryin' up 'n producin' a child, but 'tis takin' a real man to be makin' a husband 'n father.' If ye were to be askin' me, ye had ye'rself a male, not a man. *He offers a slight half-smile, but it falters with a wince as she asks whether he is married. His eyes tighten in the corners and he shifts his gaze to a spot on the table, his voice going softer.* No, Ma'am. I'm not married. |

Please, Ma'am, call me Ethan. *Bowing at the waist a little, he turns and leaves, closing the door quietly behind him. He looks down at the tin in his hands as he walks away from the house, stopping briefly to cast a last glance toward the door as he lets himself out through the gate. He grins to himself, feeling rather grateful that she hadn't questioned him about the sudden shift in his mood when she had asked if he was married. He has never told anyone about Scarlett, and just thinking about her sent a shiver of sadness through him. He shakes it off, though, and pulls another grin as he continues on his way and lets himself into his own cottage, thinking about how Ivy had felt relaxed enough with him to open up about some of her past. He can't help wondering if he will ever tell Ivy about Scarlett, and as he heads to the kitchen to fix himself something to eat before bed, he considers the idea that his mother may have been right when she'd told him that all he needed to feel comfortable with talking about it was the right person to listen. It might be nice to have a friend to talk to again, after so long.* |

*She closes the door tight and smiles at making a new friend here so quickly. Had she still been married, she'd never have been allowed to be friends with him. She'd tried to be friends with one of the footmen at her last employer and Thomas had become livid over it. Accusing her of being improper with him and even questioning her pregnancy at first. She'd been crushed. It had begun to show her how he really was, however. She walks about the cottage blowing out the lights and tending to the fire, before collecting the baby and going on up to go to bed.
