*she leaves her yard and turns, heading to his cottage, a large lump in her throat. She tries to swallow it down but she can't, too utterly humiliated after last night. She sets the humble apology don on his stoop along with a small note she wrote, begging him for forgiveness. She leaves quickly, not even knowing if he's home, and runs back to her house. She rushes in and closes the door quickly behind her, a look of confusion on Elsie's face*

**note reads**

Dear Ethan,
I'm so terribly sorry about what I did last night. I can make no excuse. I was drunk yes, and I have been lonely for a long time. But those are no reason for me to have behaved as wantonly as I did. I can never forgive myself for being so forward with you, it's not how I was raised. I have no right to expect you to forgive me. I'm so sorry....

*He'd woken up with a foggy headache and a burning in his throat that made his stomach uneasy, but he dragged himself out of bed and managed to get his early tasks finished. He's running a bit behind his normal schedule, but he knows better than to push himself, so he takes his time and eventually heads back to his cottage, just as the sun is rising, to try and eat something before he gets to the most unpleasant part of his job.

After forcing down a small sandwich, he cleans up and pauses at the kitchen window, looking out and realizing for the first time that he can see Ivy's cottage from here, a partially-obscured bit of the window with his candle on the sill is visible. He winces as he remembers his behavior the night before; morning had brought with it a painful stab of guilt for having let the alcohol -- and his emotions -- get the better of him and make him act so inappropriately towards her.

He blinks, catching himself staring at her house, and turns his eyes to the basket of tomatoes on his kitchen table. Picking one up, he grabs a knife and begins slicing it, stepping across the small kitchen to grab a glass and setting it on the table. He continues to work on a few more tomatoes, slicing them and squeezing their juices into the glass. He peels off the pieces skin and discards them, tossing the crushed bits of tomato into a bowl and using a spoon to crush them into more. After several minutes, he has a glass of tomato juice, and goes into his sitting room to retrieve a small bottle from the top of the tall bookshelf in the corner. He adds a very small amount, using the spoon to mix the drink, and goes to his trunk to find an old flask that he washes out and carefully fills with the contents of the glass. Adding the top so that she will be able to remove it easily, he cleans up his mess and finds a small piece of paper. He scrawls a quick note to Ivy, and takes it with him, along with the flask, as he locks up and turns to head in the direction of her cottage.

He freezes in his tracks, though, when his eyes fall on his doorstep and sees her gift. His eyes widen at the sight of the delicious-looking treat, and he picks it up with the note, lifting the paper and reading the delicate scrawl. He can't help the sudden burst of laughter that escapes him.*

Well, aren't we a pair, then, Miss Ivy?

*Shaking his head, he tucks the note he'd written into his pocket and goes back inside to his kitchen, searching for a clean fork to add to the one she'd left, and carries it all with him, along with the flask, as he locks his door again and strolls over to Ivy's, boldly letting himself in through the gate and knocking on her door. He's wearing his usual, albeit still slightly guilty, lopsided grin as he waits for her to answer.*

*She'd just finished nursing Nathan and was getting ready to put him to bed for the night when she heard the door. Still holding the sleepy and well fed baby in her arms, she answers the door and brings herself up short when she sees him standing there. She whisper in surprise*

*His eyes drop to the baby she is cradling and his expression softens a bit. Looking back up at her, he smiles and holds up the cake.*

If ye're the one that's made this, Miss Ivy, 'tis no doubtin' 'tis delicious.

*He lifts one shoulder shyly in a half-shrug.*

But I'd bet me favorite blanket 'twould be tastin' even better if 'twere to be shared with pleasant company.

*He pauses as he steps inside, his head tilting to the side and one eyebrow lifting in confusion.*

Why wouldn't I be wantin' anythin' to do with...

*He trails off, realization dawning on his face and his expression turning into a mild scowl.*

Don't ever say anythin' such a thing as that again, Miss Ivy. 'Tis just silly.

*He shrugs a bit, offering his lopsided grin.*

Brandy be tossed aside, I'd not have...done what I'd done...if I'd not honestly wanted to. I'd told ye already, I'm not regrettin' it, but 'twas me who was the one responsible, so 'tis me who is fortunate to be allowed to be returnin' to ye'r home. Aye?

*He raises his eyebrow again, this time expectantly.*

*She smiles at him, becoming more powerless against that grin*

Alright. Let me put him *gesturing to the sleeping baby* to bed and I'll pour us some coffee, I just had some come ready.

*She shuts the door and takes the baby into his room, gently laying him in his crib, covering him with the blanket that Edna made for him. She gives him a gentle kiss goodnight, knowing he'll sleep for quite some time this late in the day, and takes a deep breath to calm her belly. It seems the butterflies have returned*

Ivy you need to get a hold of yourself, you have no business feeling like this, ever again. Never. *she says to herself*

*Walking into the kitchen, he sets the cake on the table with the mismatched forks and drags two of the chairs a bit closer together, standing and leaning against a counter to wait for her to join him. Looking around, he's tempted to try and help get things together for their coffee, but he doesn't want to be so intrusive as to go through her cupboards without her approval.*

*She comes into the kitchen and sees him standing against the counter*

I'm sorry I needed to tuck him in and sometimes it takes a little while to get him comfy. That room gets a little chilly and he's not a fan of the cold.

*She takes the coffee to the table and goes to get the cups out the cabinet, that he's standing right in front of. Blushing, she walks over and excuses herself, reaching past him to get the cups out*

*He gives her a grin when she comes back in, nodding. He startles when she comes close, his cheeks flushing as he goes to move out of her way, his arm brushing hers as he steps around her. Pulling his arm back, he reaches up with it and scratches the back of his head like a nervous habit, smiling and gesturing toward the baby's room vaguely.*

I can be seein' about fixin' up the window in there, if ye'd like, seal it up proper so 'tis keepin' the chill out better. Then he'd be nice 'n warm.

*Taking his cup from her, he laughs and shakes his head.*

If she's havin' an odd job or two that's needin' to be takin' care of, I'd get it done for her. But if I'm to be honest, I've always tended to be keepin' to meself. Even back home, while me sisters were gigglin' 'n tendin' to their duties together like the best of friends, 'twas easier to be findin' me in the pastures or workin' in the stables with only the horses for company.

*He adds a spoon of sugar to his cup and stirs it, taking a small drink before giving her his grin.*

Elsie's going to stay for a while. I was thinking we could take a walk, and maybe go see your horses. I can't promise anything. But it might be nice? it's a nice evening out.

*She stands at the table looking down at him and smiling, hoping he would like the idea. She knows she's being forward, but truth be told, she doesn't care. She spent enough time being proper when she courted and married Thomas and look where that got her. She's already been given a reputation. She's past the point of caring anymore*

*His arm slightly tense under her hand, he tightens it against his body to help keep her fingers warmer, but tries to keep her from noticing as they walk, speaking softly now and then.*

Aye, only 'twas fairly different. 'Twas more responsibilities for me to be doin', with more jobs 'n all, yet at the same time less, without havin' to be in watchin' over a bunch of knobble-kneed stable boys.

*He tilts his head to look down at her out of the corner of his eye, grinning.*

Me da's not one to be trustin' the work to outsiders much, we're all the same way. 'Twas just me, him, 'n me sister Norie for some time before Eliza married Aedan 'n he'd joined us.

*As they reach the stable gates, he nods toward the pasture and leads her to the fence instead. As they reach the fence he whistles loudly, gaining the attention of the white Andalusian that stands grazing nearby. He pulls his arm away from her but only to reach back to rest his hand gently, reassuringly, against the middle of her back. Reaching up with his free hand as the horse approaches, he strokes her face affectionately.*

*She sees the huge white animal ambling towards them and she feels apprehension build in her. She moves to step back a little until she feels his hand on her back. The fright she feels becomes mixed with the butterflies that have become almost a part of her. She stands still as the horse comes up to them, almost sniffing at them*

That's a beautiful name...

*She's unable to take her eyes off the creature. Almost as though it has a mind of it's own she sees her own hand come up and gently touch the animal's face, feeling the hair that looks like it should feel like steeled wool, only to find it feels soft, like a warm blanket*

If ye want to be introducin' ye'rself properly to her, blow a little breath into her nose there. Just a tiny bit, 'til she's respondin'. Helps a horse to be recognizin' ye.

*He jerks his head in the horse's direction.*

Ye don't have to be gettin' too close, if ye'd like to be tryin'.

*Looking down at her again, he finds himself grinning faintly as he feels his thumb moving lightly of its own accord against her back. He lowers his voice a little, though not intentionally.*

He's whistling to himself as he strolls back to Ivy's, pausing for a moment when he reaches her gate. Reaching up, he scratches the back of his head, wondering what exactly he's doing, what's going on here. He can't help wanting to see her, to talk to her, to be close to her. Now, he can't help hoping he'll get the chance to kiss her again, too. Taking a deep breath, he grins to himself as he lets himself in through the gate, half-jogging up to her door. Miss Ivy, I know 'tis not me place to be askin', but I can't help but wonderin' what must have happened with ye'r ex-husband.

*He lifts their hands to touch his finger to her cheek lightly.*

Ye don't have to be tellin' me, of course, I just...I'n lookin' at ye, 'n underneath the lovely smile 'n the kindness, I'm seein' how he's left ye inside, broken ye'r spirit. 'N I'm not likin' it one bit.

*He shrugs slowly, his face still serious.*

I can't help wantin' to be fixin' it, if I were to be allowed the chance.

*She sips her coffee, staring at the fire*

You can't fix it. What he did was....it just something no husband should ever do to his wife. And before you go off thinking he was mean or hit me, no, he never raised a hand to me.

*Seeing that the fire needed another log, she gets up and goes over to put a small one on then moves to go back over to the couch, but she stop to look at him*

Thomas never loved me the way I loved him. Or at least the way I thought I did. I was more his property than I was his wife. I honestly don't think he realized that he made me feel that way, but he did. He's not seen Nathan once since he left, though he's supposed to have him on the weekends.

*At the mention of that, her voice breaks and her eyes mist over*

He went to Spain and then France. I worked so hard to save my marriage but he just wasn't interested. It was as though I was a last resort for him. Not at first though. At first, he would take me for walks, play me music, he'd draw these really cute pictures for me. Play the piano for me. Then after we got married it slowed down until it stopped all together. And then eventually he......

*realizes she's about to tell him WHY he left and she stops herself*

.....just left.

*He picks up his cup and takes a sip as he watches her tend the fire, setting it back down and looking up to meet her eyes when she stands before him. His lips turn down into a slight frown at her words, and his jaw clenches when he sees the tears in her eyes again. He watches her carefully, knowing she's leaving something out, but not wanting to push her. Feeling bold, he moves to sit on the edge of the sofa and reaches for her hand again, pulling her down to sit beside him. He holds both of her hands in his, he looks her directly in the eyes, his voice lowering to nearly a whisper.*

If I may be so blunt as to be sayin' so, Miss Ivy, 'tis seemin' to me that ye're far better off now, without a man like that around to be bringin' ye down. I'm knowin' ye're scared, 'n lonely, 'n worried for ye'r boy. But I promise ye, 'tis no need to be.

*He offers her a shy, lopsided grin.*

Ye've got me now, 'n I'm not plannin' on goin' anywhere. Not unless ye were to be askin' me to.

*He returns her smile and releases one of her hands to reach up and run his fingers across her jaw lightly, thinking about leaning in and kissing her again as something twinges strangely in his chest, but his nerves get the better of him and he drops his hand. Leaning back comfortably again, he gives the hand he still holds a tug and pulls her a little closer to his side, draping his arm across the back of the sofa and playing with her hair again.*

So, tell me some about ye'r boy, there. He's a cute little snapper, lookin' just like his mammy.

*He gives her a grin.*

*Smiling at the mention of her son, she settles in next to him, feeling him play with her hair. She leans forward and collects her coffee, then leans back against him slightly and sips it*

Nathan was born on December first and he's the center of my world. I thought for a while I wouldn't be able to carry him. I had some...*not wanting to tell him all the details, men don't care about those kind of things*...troubles, let's just say. Had to be hospitalized once even. I don't remember what happened. Thomas and I were holding a masquerade ball for village's Fall celebration. Thomas comes from money. A lot of it and he likes to flaunt it. He used to love having balls and parties. I must have been about six or seven months pregnant by then.

*She looks ahead into the fire again, remembering that night as best as she can*

I remember he wouldn't dance with me. It was the first dance of the night and I thought he'd dance with me. But he danced with a woman named Bella. She was a young girl that was staying with one of the wealthier families here. She'd tried to seduce him while we were on honeymoon. Anyway, he danced with her and I got upset. I remember going out to the garden to get some air, we had a very large house and it had a beautiful garden. And then I just don't remember anything. Just waking up in the hospital two days later. My friends that were with me say I just kind of collapsed. I don't know. Eva, the doctor, said that my blood pressure was through the roof and that I was sick. I was sick through my whole pregnancy. Just one of those things, she had said. I was supposed to rest, but I couldn't because I had the bakery to run and with the fact that he got disinherited by his family, we needed the money. I had to work. But I had him and he was healthy as can be. He had Thomas's black hair and he looked a lot like him when he was born, but now, growing into his features I actually see me. He's got my eyes. But you've never seen him awake to see them. *she looks down at her coffee and smiles* He's my little man...

*He leans his head closer to hers and listens intently as she talks a bit about her little one, his smile faltering as she tells him more about the man who had done her so terribly wrong. His hand moves a bit further into her hair and he feels his fingertips graze her skin, so he curves his palm around the nape of her neck, applying a gentle, kneading pressure to the area to try to help loosen some of the tension he feels there. Without moving his hand, he leans forward and picks up his own cup, sipping the coffee and holding the cup on his knee as he resumes the movements of the hand on her neck, hoping she finds it as comforting as he intends it to. He laughs softly.*

Aye, I've not had good enough timin' to be seein' him awake. 'Tis just meanin' I'll be needin' to stop by more often durin' the day, aye?

*He freezes, his cheeks reddening as he mentally kicks himself for being so bold as to assume she'd want him around so much.*

*His gentle touch on her neck relaxes her in a way she's never known. She feels herself melting under his hand. She lowers her head slightly and closes her eyes, become hypnotized by the motions and the wave of relaxation that sweeps over her. Her head still lowered, she looks over at him and laughs softly when he says he'd have to come by during the day*

I'd like that. I think I'd like to see you more often.....

*surprised by the words that just came out of her mouth she turns red and stands up quickly*

You know what, we forgot all about that cupcake....

*she moves to walk to the kitchen to get the cupcake, embarrassed and shocked by her own behavior*

*He rests his head back against the sofa and watches her quietly, his mouth curving into his usual grin and his eyes soft as he ponders the strange feeling that keeps making itself known whenever he realizes again that he's with her, touching her, close enough to breathe her scent. A strange thumping occurs in his chest and he can't help the genuine smile that stretches across his face when he hears her admit that she would, indeed, like to see him more, but he doesn't have a chance to react before she jumps to her feet. He drops his hand, his face twisting with confusion as he watches her hurry out of the room, and barely thinking about his actions he gets to his feet and follows her, coming up behind her at the table so they nearly collide as she turns around.*

*His hands still on her waist, he steps forward again, unable to stop himself from trying to get closer, and finally he turns their bodies slightly so that her back is against the wall by the table. His breath hitches as his hands move up to cup the sides of her face, sliding back so his fingers sink into the soft curls of her hair. Their gazes locked, he leans in and dips his head so that their noses are nearly touching, and whispers again, his voice coming out somewhat husky.*

Ye're not, ye know.

*A sound of surprise comes from her as his mouth comes down on hers, but she doesn't stop him. Her hands move up to his shoulders, her hands traced up his neck and into his hair as she moved into the kiss. It was better than she could have dreamed. His lips were soft and firm and she couldn't help it when her lips opened, her tongue darting out to tease the corner of his. She didn't even try to stop the small sound of pleasure escapes her throat*

*He groans against her lips, getting lost in her kiss, her touch, and as he feels her fingers in his own hair, he can't help but tighten his hold, pulling her even closer if possible and kissing her almost hungrily. He pulls one hand slowly free from her curls and moves his palm to cup the side of her face before his fingers slowly trail along her jaw. He sighs in pleasure, his fingertips gliding along the flesh of her throat as he caresses the soft flesh there.*

*Her heart beating so hard it feels like it's going to beat right out of her chest and ears. The sound of his groan causes a stirring in her she's never known. A warmth spread through her like a fire. She tips her head back, giving him access to her neck. His fingers tracing the skin on side, his lips moved down the other and his sigh sounds at the same time as she calls out to him*

Ethan...

*she bites her bottom lip, hard enough to taste blood and it stops her dead in her tracks. What the bloody hell was she doing?! If he knew the kind of man she'd been married to, he'd be revolted by even touching her! She turns her head to the side and begs him, tears streaming down her face*

No, Ethan, please......stop........*she sobs*

*Crying, shakes her head, hating herself. Hating herself for hurting him and hating herself for for wanting that kiss so badly. She slides down the wall until her knees are at her face level and hugs them. Trying to hide her embarrassment*

Ethan it's not you.....

*she tries to talk between sobs, but she has a hard time catching her breath*

*Thoroughly confused, he feels his heart constrict as she collapses into herself and the desire to comfort her, to take away her pain, is too strong to resist anymore. Stepping forward, he reaches down and lifts her into his arms easily, carrying her back into the sitting room and settling himself on the edge of the sofa with her on his lap. He cradles her against his chest and strokes her hair, alternating between whispering and pressing gentle kisses into her forehead, rocking her slowly.*

'Tis alright, me Ivy, 'tis no need for tears.

*Reaching up to brush away some of her tears from her cheek, he frowns sadly and looks into her eyes, shaking his head.*

I'm wantin' ye to be listenin' to me, aye? Ye could be tellin' me anythin', anythin' at all, 'n 'twould not be changin' a thing. I'm knowin' we've only been acquainted a short time, but 'tis long enough for ye to be startin' to understand that I'm a man of me word, 'n a man who's trustin' his instincts. 'N right now, me instincts are tellin' me that this is right, 'n 'tis not a thing ye could possibly be sayin' that would be changin' me mind.

*He stops rocking briefly as he ponders her words, his eyes widening as he realizes what he means.*

Ye're meanin', he's...

*He shakes his head roughly, looking down at her in blatant surprise for a long moment before shaking it off, swearing angrily under his breath. Leaning back into the cushions and pulling her closer against him, he buries his face in her hair and breathes her in, allowing her scent to calm his building anger at the man who had hurt her so badly. He struggles to keep his voice steady as he holds her tightly.*

Oh, Ivy, what's that dosser gone 'n done to ye?

*He shakes his head, closing his eyes.*

I've half a mind to be goin' 'n findin' him now, 'n make him pay for how he's been so cruel to ye.

*He kisses her temple, pulling her hands away from her face and looking into her eyes, his finger crooking beneath her chin.*

I'd told ye, love. I'm here, 'n I'll not be goin' anywhere. I told ye 'twas nothin' that could be sendin' me off, save for tellin' me bluntly to go.

*He smiles very slightly, but sincerely.*

I'd meant it.

*He tucks a lock of hair behind her ear and pulls her close again.*

*She was amazed by his words. The simple fact that he's not disgusted by her actually leaves her speechless. She looks up at him, and her hands find their way up to his face. She searches his eyes and sees nothing but honesty there. She pulls him down and gently kisses him, mumbling a soft 'Thank You' against his lips*

*She traces his lips with her fingertips as she kisses him, reluctantly ending it, she looks up at him at him. Her body was still shaking from crying so hard and she'd gotten a small case of the hiccups as well. She rests her head against him and lays her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating as hard as hers. She was comfortable. More so than she'd really ever felt. She didn't want it to end just yet, but her eyes were heavy. Partly from the crying and partly from having already had a long day*

*The movement of his fingers in her hair, combined with the trauma of the evening becomes almost too much for her. She pulls the blanket her mother had made for her off the back of the sofa and pulls it over her in a way that he's covered as well. Closing her eyes and nuzzling her face in, she soon drifts off to sleep in his arms, her hand still at rest above his heart*
