What to do?; ideas for story avatars/characters?

I'm stuck for ideas for story avatars/characters.

Not doing the demon god thing again.

Kind of like the idea of solar exalted but it's probably OTT.

I've been watching Fate/stay night a bit and there are ideas from there.

Are our avatars in-story supposed to be influenced by our own thoughts / feelings at the time we get yanked out of reality and dropped into this situation?

I'm still trying to come up with something that will be interesting and satisfying to write (so that I will get my finger out and actually _write_) without being self-indulgent. One thing I'd like is to have the character relatively weak to start with but capable of significant growth.

Any suggestions?

Regards thoughts / feelings, I've been assuming that we're generally the one running the body at get go, unless there is some condition/effect/situation that might cause the body to be running on 'automatic' as it were.

Also, been thinking... if you do DO a Fate/Stay Night character, it wouldn't be impossible to have a Servant; Caster and such.

However, it would also be possible to do the meta-meta/inception thing and go "deeper"... you are an insertion into an insertion. Ie, you have mostly identical thoughts/memories... right up to the divergences; such as remembering accidentally summoning Caster.

I was considering this myself, due to how important the matter seemed to be, and I had been considering settling on a form of 'diffusion'. Almost everybody would be 'drawing' on the memories/reflexes of the original owner of the body to some degree, if nothing else then moving with a normal degree of coordination, so there likely would be a minor flow back the way.

Some habits, preferences, or fears might filter through to (at the minimum) colour your perception of things. The more 'reflexive' the reaction or action would be for the original character the more likely it filters through in some form. For example, I expect "Aleena" to, at the least, make a gesture of reverence at times in regards to her deity even though she is 'mostly' the person from Earth.

Another example of what I mean is that with the working name of 'Elizabeth de Abinger' (for the character who have I become) I'd react to that name if it was called. I also often draw on the knowledge and skills of my 'other self' so it's not so surprising that I might have something like some of the vanity ("worth ever penny to that water mage") of the character towards her appearance.

Does that seem to fit with how others were seeing this or did I misunderstand the issue?

It seems about right... unless someone disagrees?

I am strongly in favor of letting everyone decide this for themselves (for their own character). As a guideline, Richard's suggestion seems like a good guideline and the most common case. On the other hand, it doesn't need to be true for everyone. There may be people for who the input of one mindset is nearly zero (e.g. someone who reincarnated as Lancelot, but can draw on the fictional persona's fighting skills without 'going into character'). The exception may be abilities that will only work with the proper mindset -- lucky me.

A Dalek. What a great idea! Ultimate firepower, no boobs, and I'd get to Exteeerrrrrminaaate any meatbags that annoy me.

Um, except... um... can someone carry me down these stairs. ;_;

Nice try, Bomb, but I am well aware the Daleks just traded their weakness vs staircases for a weakness vs social fu. Defeated by staircase is still better than defeat by cheerleader.
