Today I ran across some pictures of a tomahawk styled hatchet that I made for my brother for Christmas two years ago. I found an old Rig Builders Hatchet head in a pile of junk that was missing the handle and thought that it would make a neat little hatchet. I started by removing the hammer head, but wanted it to have a functional flat to be used for hammering if need be. I then shaped the remaining hammer section to be hexagon for a neat look. The blade was shaped to the profile that I liked as well. I was living out in the Alaska bush so finding a handle was not an option, so I took an axe handle, cut it off at the bottom, and hand carved it to fit the eye as well as reshaped the overall profile. After all that was done I polished the head and blued it and installed the head on the handle. Overall I think it turned out very well. Anyways here are some pictures of it. Hope you guys enjoy it. Where beauty meets function. Love it!! What tools, Greebe, did you use to shape the head? |

I just used a bench grinder and a belt sander. I used the bench grinder for getting it roughed out and then the belt sander for finish it off. Care was taken to keep it cool so as to not ruin the temper of the blade. The hammer end was cut off with a portable band saw. Thanks Greebe |

Looks good. How long do you think the handle is? |

Neat! I would not have guessed that you used some basic shop tools to make such a fine looking specimen. I've been thinking about getting a tomahawk ever since watching your tomahawk video. How does this tomahawk style hatchet compare in performance to your tomahawk? Edited by SnowShoe, Dec 14 2011, 09:36 PM.

When I built this I kind of tried to keep it close to a hawk as I could. Performance wise it is about the same. Only part that would be harder is making a new handle. That was very time consuming where as a tomahawk handle can be made with a simple pocket knife and a half hours time or so. As far as a nice hawk goes check this one out: http://www.simstactical.com/tomahawk1.html ![]() Greebe |

I want to say it was around 14" long, but I do not remember exactly. |
