The BL20GH is the ugliest in my book. It even has a ****ty horn on it as I can see in the pic. A K3LA. They sound ok, but it all depends on how you tune them, unlike CDOT where its at a factory tunning....... |

Both  The BL20GH would look ok if they fixed the nose and the back. The other looks like a brick on wheels |

They named BL20GH for a reason. If you replace the 20 in the model number with a "U" it says it all. BLUGH!!! |

Oh the BL20GH hands down. To me, it looks like some foreign (to us) locomotive trying to be a GP38 or something. The giant radiator fans are plain weird, the nose is outta wack, etc. Not just being from Long Island, but I think the DE30ACs and DM30ACs do look pretty cool and impressive. When they were first delivered with the horn on the center of the locomotive and nothing other than the 'MTA Long Island Rail Road' on the nose, they just looked weird. Now, with the horn right above the cab windows, and with the 'We Serve with pride' Logo on the nose as well, they look pretty beefy in my opinion. They also sound really impressive, blasting through locations on the main doing 65 or 80 mph. The 710 sounds good in there. EDIT: The DEs and DMs don't look that great from a head on shot, so here's another for a better view: ![]() |

That first one, but only because the radiator fans on the BLUGH remind me of an SD45. e.e |

I might be the only member in this forum who likes the BL20's. I see them all the time and they have actually grown on me. I love the horn, it sounds so unique; almost like a form of music to my ears (Its better then the red's pathetic attempts at a horn, They sound like a guy with schizophrenia trust me, I live on the New Cannan Line!) |

neither. They both look to generic. Over here we really only have two styles of locos; and truthfully they are both getting old looking. GM & GE: its time for some changes! at least take some of your European locos and bring 'em over here. Alstom & Seimens: time for you to expand your market to the states! peter |

I'm glad we have much more varied locomtive and MU styling here in the UK. Those two both look dull and boring to me. The MUs especially though, most American ones just seem to be coaches with motors and a cab stuck on the end, whereas European ones tend to be designed a bit more. |

I'm all for American rail, and we've got some nice stock, but you're right, Europeans do tend to have better looking MUs in some cases. |

Oh, yeah, I really like some American stock.
Definately But I think even with the MU style of just coaches with motors and cabs, European ones tend to look better than the American equivalent (ie, the class 156) |

Although our RRs do look all the the same really other then the paint job thrown on them, I still have to vote for US railroads... Our locomotives aren't meant to be all pretty and nice looking. They are there to get the job done. If the trains were meant to look all nice and pretty they wouldn't be hauling tons of coal, or schlepping yuppies in and out of work.... Granted out MUs aren't the sexiest things around but they do what they are designed to do.....WORK, not look pretty. http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/mncw8519.jpg http://www.jefflubchanskycpa.com/NJT1300MEADOWS-AUG8-99SLIDE29.jpg On the other hand our locomotives themselves in the diesel department can out do/out haul anyone's by a long shot... http://members.cox.net/dbdavies/csx/CSX800-08.jpg http://www.railfanningwesternpa.info/csx7834.jpg Although most of our railroad don't use electric, we make up for it by moving more freight more efficiently... If we did use electric trains to haul freight can you imagine how many locos we would need to haul the same train 2-3 diesel locomotives can do(not to mention how stupid it would look)? |

Yes, but you can have both rather than just one. They have to be designed before they can be built.
See, that's all very well, but ours work well at doing what they have to as well as looking half decent.
Thing is though, yours are designed for hauling longer trains over lines that are mostly for freight use, whereas ours are designed for hauling trains at higher speeds on lines that are mostly passenger. Generally the most locos we'll have hauling a train is two, but usually it's just the one. |

Indeed, so it is very hard if not impossible to even compare these 2 countries. |
