RICHMOND, Va. — If all goes as planned, two new Amtrak trains will start service in Lynchburg on Oct. 1, and in Richmond on Dec. 15, the News Advance reports. The state rail agency anticipates that 51,000 travelers a year will use the Lynchburg service and 42,000 passengers a year will take advantage of the new Richmond train, which will originate at the Staples Mill Station. While firm schedules and fares have yet to be worked out, the Lynchburg train will leave the Kemper Street Station about 7:45 a.m. and reach Union Station 11:20-11:30 a.m., the department said, and depart Washington about 5 p.m. and return to Lynchburg at about 8:30 p.m. The Richmond train will tentatively pull out of Staples Mill about 7 a.m. daily and arrive at Washington’s Union Station about 9:30 a.m., then leave Union Station about 4 p.m. and arrive back at Staples Mill at 6-6:30 p.m., according to the Rail and Public Transportation Department. It would be the ninth daily round-trip between Richmond and Washington. Each train will consist of up to eight passenger coaches, a business-class coach and a café car, said Kevin B. Page of the state Department of Rail and Public Transportation. The Commonwealth Transportation Board in February approved a $25.2 million, three-year pilot project to run two new passenger trains daily to Washington. With the agreement, “Virginia makes history,” Page said, because the state has not subsidized intercity passenger service before. Amtrak’s board of directors is expected to act on the proposal at its April 22-23 meeting. (This item appeared in the News Advance March 20, 2009.) March 20, 2009 |

Let's hope this pays off. Wonder what the lead cars will be though. |

Awesome but where are they gonna get the equipment for this? I mean there is nothing left, they are gonna have to pull some strings, especially for a full consist w/ a cafe. Davis |

Amtrak has plenty of equipment floating about...It doesn't take much time to get a single train together.. |

I have my doubts though. They said if they cut the Rutland Service trains then they will never come back anytime soon because it would be near to impossible to get its equipment back. I dunno what they are doing. I think they are okay in the engine department but they will need to refurbish a few more amcans from Beech Grove. Davis |

Huh, I really wonder what this service would be called. The Richmond Flyer? And I kinda agree with Davis. How would they get the extra equipment and still have enough for spares? I would suggest getting a few of the Multilevel's that NJT has in order to accommodate the extra usage. And they also need more power and maybe some extra in case it fails. |

Power shouldnt be too bad. The same 6 P42s have been sitting in IVY CITY (DC Repair Shops) for over a month, there always running and always in the exact same spot, sitting next to the fuel tanks. They need to step up their game. Im guessing they will just call it "The Virginia Service", knowing how creative they are, lol. I dont think they will be purchasing any of the NJT/ACES style multilevels considering esthetics and that they want the same kind of cars so maintenence would be easier but its a cool thought.
