Atlanta council gives support to rail agreement

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Atlanta City Council ratified an agreement Monday (March 23) with the Georgia Department of Transportation aimed at protecting part of the planned Beltline corridor from the impacts of freight and passenger rail traffic.

But before passing the resolution unanimously, council members made changes putting the DOT on notice that they also want to protect other city neighborhoods from being disrupted by the state's rail expansion plans.

The resolution authorized Mayor Shirley Franklin to enter into an agreement with the DOT, Amtrak and other transit and planning agencies to accommodate a proposed passenger rail line into Atlanta without using the 4.3-mile Decatur Belt. Atlanta Beltline Inc. wants to use that area east of Midtown Atlanta for the Beltline, a 22-mile corridor of parks and recreational trails.

The agreement calls for running the trains instead along the Western Trunk line west of downtown Atlanta.

But that alternative stirred protests from neighborhood activists worried that it would affect homes and businesses along Marietta Street.

"I will not support a plan that would wipe out an entire community," said Councilman Ivory Lee Young, whose district includes that area of the city. "I have difficulty turning a blind eye to that."

To address the neighbors' concerns, the council approved amendments sponsored by Young and Councilwoman Mary Norwood expressing the council's intent that the rail plans not be allowed to harm properties along Marietta Street and any other neighborhoods that could be affected.

Dont even get me started with this ATL crap. As most of you know, I went there on a trip by CSX, and I learned all about the whole area, railroad wise. Georgia trys to pass these things, but they never do because of the government there. I got a few friends who transfered down there and they hate it................. Atlanta needs a rail system, and I dont even care if its light rail, they need something. MARTA was build for the Olympics, so thats why MARTA rail has never really expanded much over the years, and plus the fact that Georgia does not put money towards the DOT there.

An equal battle is between Northern and Southern Virginia, they are like two different breeds. Like first of all in Alexandria and Quantico (that whole vicinity) everyone talks like they would in DC/MD/PA, but when you hit like south of Frredericksburg working towards Richmond its all Southern accents. And the southern virginians hate the northern viriginians (not all but alot of them do). Thats why in any category the southerners have a greater population so the northerners never get anything passed. For example VRE exspansion, that is never gonna happen at least dramatically because Southern Virginia people see it as Northern Virginia's toy. Service to Richmond woulod be almost impossible because almost all of them live in a shack, not to be stereotypical, lol. Another good example is I-95, they won't do anything about it down there and since they have majority vote it doesn't matter. A feasible option would be A. Increase highway capacity or B. Increase VRE Service.


Sorry to rant but I feel that in some twisted demonic way connects with what Gerr was saying.

Yeah, I'm kinda skeptic if Georgians will actually follow through with what they proposed and start passenger rail service. There is a lot of improvement needed in all of the rail systems here, though.

Yeah, I'm kinda skeptic if Georgians will actually follow through with what they proposed and start passenger rail service. There is a lot of improvement needed in all of the rail systems here, though.
Im not holding my breath on this one like I said before. The whole south is behind when it comes to Commuter rail, except Florida, because they at least have Tri-Rail.

True, but that was probably needed even more knowing their road networks. Florida is actually keeping up with it unlike Georgia with their MARTA subway network. They built brand new bridges and are replacing all old track with welded rail and concrete ties! I would be shocked if Georgia even got a trolley....

The more I think about it, when I was in Atlanta and its Metro areas, they need a system like Tri-Rail. I drove up around the mountains of North Georgia and most of North Georgia is Metro Atlanta and is crowded, so therefore needs a commuter rail system. I-75 and 575 are crowded highways and I know they are bad because I sat in it trying to get the Hartsfeild Jackson International Airport.
