CHICAGO - Long-awaited upgrades to passenger rail stations and train repair facilities totaling $80 million will be invested in Amtrak's Illinois operations, railroad officials said Wednesday as they released a breakdown of how federal stimulus funding will be spent, according to the Chicago Tribune. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided $1.3 billion for Amtrak projects nationwide. The money will go toward hundreds of initiatives, including modernizing train-repair shops, improving security at Amtrak stations and spending almost $91 million to rehabilitate damaged locomotives and train coaches and return them to service, officials said. Some of the restored trains would be put into service in Illinois, where double-digit ridership gains have been recorded on many routes recently and seats often sell out. Almost $50 million will be used to improve Amtrak's Chicago maintenance facilities and terminal near Union Station, officials said. The 14th Street repair station was built in the 1980s, and it hasn't been updated in a decade. The outdated facility and lack of storage space to bring trains in from the cold in winter months have led to an increase of equipment breakdowns on Amtrak's aging fleet. Some $20 million that is earmarked to expand the building where trains are serviced and inspected in Chicago "will improve our four-season reliability, which has not been satisfactory to us or to our customers," Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.
