FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Speakers from Amtrak and the Midwest High Speed Rail Association will highlight the benefits of passenger rail service during a Rally for Rail event at Baker Street Station, the Fort Wayne Daily News reported.

Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association has scheduled the show of public support for the return of passenger rail service to Fort Wayne for 4:30 p.m. April 3 at the former train depot at 221 W. Baker St.

NIPRA representatives said the rally will point out that passenger rail travel requires only 10 percent of the fuel, per passenger mile, that highway travel requires; and train travel could help bring the country closer to energy independence while improving air quality.

In the rally announcement, they said the event also will remind area residents of studies showing the return of passenger rail service would translate into thousands of new jobs throughout the state. They also said the rally will encourage area residents to push for northeast Indiana to get its share of $8 billion in new federal funding for passenger rail service.

"Modern passenger rail service can be restored to northeast Indiana ... (but) this will only become a reality if our state and federal elected officials fight for the citizens of Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana in Indianapolis and Washington," NIPRA representatives said.
