ALBANY - Full funding for Amtrak’s Adirondack service from the Capital Region to Montreal was restored as part of the 2009-10 state budget that is under consideration by state legislators, according to the Capital Journal.

Gov. David Paterson’s original budget slashed the funding by half, to $2.5 million from $5 million.

The funding ensures that the train can operate for a full year instead of shutting down after six months, said Bruce Becker, president of Empire State Passengers Association, an advocacy organization.

The scenic route takes passengers from Albany to Montreal once a day, where it travels along the shores of Lake Champlain. About 112,000 passengers a year used the rail service during Amtrak’s most recent fiscal year, which ran from Sept. 30, 2007 to Sept. 30, 2008.

“The original budget would have meant the service would be drastically reduced, or stopped entirely when the funding ran out,” he said.

The rail service runs once a day, leaving Albany at 11:30 a.m. and arriving in Montreal at 7 p.m. From Montreal, the train leaves at 9:30 a.m. and arrives in Albany at 5:40 p.m. It makes nine stops in New York and two stops in Canada.

Becker said the service is critical to the North County’s economy.

“It serves a lot of people in that area and is certainly a tremendous boost for their tourism,” he said.

Amtrak leaders continue to push New York to support its passenger rail service. The Adirondack is the only route the state currently supports.
