LYNCHBURG, Va. - A project is in the works to have more trains rolling between central Virginia and Washington, D.C., later this year, according to the Associated Press.

Gov. Tim Kaine says the state and Norfolk Southern signed an agreement April 1 to make infrastructure improvements to support new freight and passenger rail service to the Lynchburg region.

The governor's office says Amtrak is expected to sign a similar agreement next month.

They are part of a public-private partnership that will help double passenger train service from Washington to two trains per day. Kaine's office says construction of platform, track and rolling stock improvements is expected to begin this month with the start of rail service scheduled for October.
