One-year trial to build better ridership

March 30, 2009
NJT-09-035

NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Richard Sarles today announced an increase in train service at Great Notch Station on the Montclair-Boonton Line in response to community requests.

Sarles said NJ TRANSIT would expend a one-year trial period for the new service in the interest of building better ridership. NJ TRANSIT and community leaders hope to encourage 75 average weekday riders by the end of six months, and 100 over the year of the trial.

Congressman Bill Pascrell, Assemblyman Scott Rumana, and Little Falls Township Mayor Michael DeFrancisci, who had advocated for a reevaluation of service levels at Great Notch, welcomed the news.

“I am pleased that NJ TRANSIT has responded positively to our requests and is giving Little Falls another chance to prove Great Notch Station’s value in the community,” Pascrell said. “It is my hope that with these expanded services, commuters in Little Falls will reaffirm the station’s viability and ensure that it remains open long into the future.”

“I have heard from my constituents on this issue, and I am pleased that we’ve been able to find a solution that works for everyone,” Assemblyman Rumana said. “I encourage residents to consider traveling from Great Notch Station to make this trial a success.”

“I’m very pleased that NJ TRANSIT has given our community the opportunity to demonstrate the continued need for the station,” said Mayor DeFrancisci. “It will now be up to the community to commit to using this expanded service.”

Beginning with a timetable change, effective April 19, NJ TRANSIT will stop four additional trains at the station—two inbound trains in the morning and two outbound trains in the evening.

The added morning stops will serve the station at 5:46 a.m. and 7:19 a.m., arriving in Hoboken at 6:33 a.m. and 7:59 a.m., respectively. A third train will continue to serve the station at 8:15 a.m., arriving in Hoboken at 9:03 a.m.

In the evening, additional outbound trains will stop at the station at 4:18 p.m. and 7:41 p.m., after departing Hoboken at 3:34 p.m. and 6:51 p.m., respectively. Two other trains will continue to serve Great Notch at 5:52 p.m. and 6:23 p.m.

As a result of these changes, Great Notch Station will be served by seven trains each weekday—three inbound and four outbound.

Customers traveling to or from New York Penn Station can make connections at Montclair State University or Newark Broad Street stations.
