As many of you may or may not be aware, tomorrow is the internet Sopa Strike. I don't know about all of you, or even the entirety of our staff's opinions of SOPA and PIPA bills that will be passing through congress within the next month or two. That being said, Gandalf and I are personally opposed to the bill as it currently stands. In light of this, TCR will be blacked out an inaccessible tomorrow in protest of these two bills. It will only be for tomorrow, and we'll be back entirely by the following day. Sorry if this inconevniences any members, but we feel that this bill as it stands is not acceptable, and will be joining the strike. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding,

I just thought I'd let you know that AMTZ will also be going black for tomorrow in strike against SOPA/PIPA.

I see the blackout as pointless, cause it's just giving the politicians what they want: Freedom of speech shutdown on the internet.

The Politicians want us to believe that SOPA & PIPA will not change the internet. However in reality it gives them lots of power to infringe on our 1st amendment rights (as well as some other amendments). The Blackout is a form of peaceful protest; similar to the sit-ins done down south during the civil rights marches.

Currently the list of websites joining in on this is quite large & growing. Wikipedi, Reddit, Boing Boing, I've read are confirmed to be going dark. Twitter, Google, Amazon, Ebay, Yahoo, & Facebook are all considering it last I heard; I've been doing some research to see if any of the potentials I listed have become confirmed yet.

peter
Edit Update:

Google, Twitter, & Microsoft will be joining in on the protest but will not be shutting down services. Wikipedia is only shutting down the English wiki (so if you need wikipedia, use a foreign language & google translate). Yahoo, Amazon & Ebay have all stated that they plan on joining the protest but to what extent is unclear at this stage.

This has been TCR Action Daily News, I'm PerRock. :D

AMI Trains, the top Locomotion game content site, is also in on it.

I get it now. This is like the modern civil rights movement (of sorts), then.

Site downtime will start at 12:00PM and end at 12:00 AM on January 18. It should apply to your time zone thanks to the coding, but if not, that's GMT-5, or Eastern Time.

One should be clear. What everyone is protesting is NOT that piracy is good & that we all want to download illegal free stuff. But that the wording of the bills is so vague that it will allow the big $$ corporations (who, lets face it, control the government) to shut down restrict access, shut down and revoke funding for any website (and arrest people involved in the site.

For instance, some lawyer from uberCorp could visit TCR and notice how similar the new posts icon is to their logo. He then can have the site shut down for good & Skiggs arrested.

Of course, we are in no way supporting piracy, simply that SOPA and PIPA aren't the correct ways to go about fighting it.

I agree about SOPA & PIPA. Those things are just another step toward the end of democracy, if passed.

It's not possible at all that they've shut down your site for one picture of something at this moment in time, considering that these bills haven't been signed into law. If you actually have a site, and it was shut down, it was likely the site's host or some other force larger than you and for more reasons than one picture, given the current situation of things. They're too busy going after larger, (and I don't mean this offensively) more important sites than yours at this moment in time.

Now, many will say just off of that that SOPA ect. will only affect large sites, not true, not what I'm saying. I'm talking strictly as things stand now. I'll debate that more if need be, but I won't run my mouth unless it's called for XD

Well who needs these bills if they were already allowed to close down megaupload? Just stop wasting our tax payers money to "force" these bills through congress if your just going to do what you would do with the bill anyway.

The FBI has closed down megaupload, and apparently has arrested several employees in other countries(not sure how that works? Must've twisted interpols arm?) But within 15mins of megaupload being condemned , the hacker group Anonymous and its 5,000+ participants started taking down government websites as well as big company websites. So apparently the U.S. has declared "war" on the internet and the resistance has blew a even bigger blow then the government did.
I am sure that the hacking group will continue to hack government sites, they have sent there sites on the FBI's website next. AnonOps summarized this past attack on government websites as well as media outlets as "Tango Down" Sweet a simple.
Only time will tell how heated this "war" will become.

What made people come to this? I know that SOPA may change the web forever but why did anonymous have to go hack the government websites? Who knows what will happen now.

Because the government has no right to shut down websites in the manner they have. I had stuff hosted on megaupload that I used on a personal level..POOF gone. There is no reason to just out right close down the site, now anyone who had private files on the site lost all access to them.
So the hackers as much right to hack the government websites as they did to close down megaupload, not to mention we the tax payers pay to keep those servers up and running that the feds have there websites on, so why should we not use what we pay for for us.

I see what you mean. I was thinking about that exact thing today. I have some stuff on fileshare, and I am now nervous to see what is going to happen there. Right Now I am crossing my fingers.

I think there was a mis-understanding... simply have backups of stuff you have on file sharing sites, I actually have files completely gone that were hosted on megaupload gone now because the site was shut down with no warning.

I could actually see grounds for a class action lawsuit that could be filed on the behalf of people who had legal personal files on the site. If enough people lost personal legit data the government has overstepped its bounds. The only remedy the government could have is to sift through all the data to purge the illegal and open the site back up (which we all know won't happen). Another thing that won't happen........the Justice Department (under control of the Obama puppet Eric Holder) getting in trouble for stepping on the Constitution AGAIN......... This isn't an issue of legality, it is 100% illegal for the Federal government to delete legal property of any citizen. The thinking that its for the greater good of the copyright holders puts the importance of one citizen over another. That is totally opposite of what the justice system is supposed to do.

The one annoying thing about a lot of the petitons against SOPA - in particular Google's, and including the one linked to on this site - is that it is only focused on America, when these bills will affect the world.
It seems that most of the petitions require a zip code to be able to sign them - something I don't have because I'm not in the US.
