Presidential Speech: The Confederation of Virtue I seek to build a 'Confederation of Virtue', not a kingdom of the blind, leading the blind. I do not seek your blind obedience, that is least of which I seek. What I seek instead...is to instill a simple wisdom. I would argue that independent minds are worth more than the blood of patriots on the battlefield of thoughts and ideas. Adversity and struggle is the cornerstone of a free and just society, for how can we progress unless we have reason to want more, to strive for greater and better things - to construct our own vision, our own values, and change the world to suit our needs. It would be a great loss, to suit the world and ignore the tools of scientific and cultural progress, that have brought us out from the caves and to a new world. But despite all this progress, there lies a curse to our good fortune. What do I speak of, perhaps you ask? What I speak of ladies, gentlemen, and people of reason - is the double curse of altruism and unquenchable desire. It is this double curse, this inversion of sanity and scourge of reason that has caused a never ending cycle of senseless violence and bloodshed - the altruistic adventure of 'moral obligation'. That we are some how obliged to impose our views, ideas, or opinions on others. Whether it crushes their independence, their freedom, or their very way of life - or if they are lucky - not. Then we have the other side of the coin. Those that would impose by force, take by force, and create by force. One can feel some ideological sympathy for the conqueror, the raider - for they do not pretend to be the 'bastion of liberty' or the 'liberator of the oppressed', they instead exist within the bounds of rational enterprise - the acquisition of a reward - to take what does not belong to them. Nevertheless, we should not hold that to 'take' or to 'protect' simply because it 'is', should be our future, and the destiny of mankind. We have an opportunity to do the opposite, to exist within rational self-interest, and within the confines of the basics of ethics and morality. There is a path, we must take to achieve a 'confederation of virtue'. A confederation because a society should not build itself too rigidly. It should not hold one ideal above another, or treat one group or individual with any less respect - let alone remove their rights on the basis of popular support. We must embrace everyone, but not give in to the moral altruist who seeks to 'help', nor fall into the abyss of quashing the rights of some, to enrich the livelihood of others. A fair and just society cannot engage in warfare without 'just cause', and there is only one real 'just cause' - that is self-defense - to protect the rights of yourself and others close and important to you. It cannot be denied that the 'moral altruist' has done some good things in the world, and averted some of the horrors of war, being visited upon the unsuspecting - or helpless. But this is no justification for the failures and disastrous record of interventionism. Whenever one nation goes to war against another, or one region goes to war against another - the result is cumulative. The more we intervene, the far easier it is for the 'raider', the 'invader', the 'conqueror' to justify their own stance - that they are merely defending themselves against an oppressive and irrational system of 'collective security' - from those that would irrationally defend the failed state, rather than give it to a group that could put it on the path to self-betterment - or to cut off the rotten vine, a failed region - before it turns to dust and ashes. Therefore, to exist outside these two avenues or spheres of thought and influence, is to embrace reason, and to embrace the very cornerstone of ethics and morality - to stand before the world like a colossus, but not use that strength, not use that power - but instead to encourage the path to peace and prosperity through dialogue and co-operation. Not the initiation of force against another, or succumbing to the slippery slope of 'moral imperialism' under the guise of 'helping the weak'. If we can succeed in the construction of a 'confederation of virtue', the virtuous cause of reason, truth, and the preservation of liberty - then perhaps there is a hope of a better community - a new vision of the world of tomorrow - not a world of dust or a world of failed dreams. Together let us go forth, together let us find our destiny. Our 'Confederation of Virtue' awaits! |
