Okey dokey, here we go.

Welcome to Togami's Ballot Booth, and the second season of polls!

Let's tear into this one like a starving donkey would hypothetically tear into a tasty hot burrito.

So, this week's question is:

'Do you prefer talents related to combat or talents unrelated to combat?'

Suggested by Suspect in the IRC.

Reply to this topic with your reasoning and your opinions! (CAREFULLY)

Remember, this is just for fun, so if you choose to post replies with your reasoning for your choices, don't flame other people's characters or whatever.

Have fun!

Despite my main character having a combat-oriented talent, I do generally prefer non-combat talents. I feel like characters with a knack for fighting are often reduced to just being about fighting, and can become somewhat one-dimensional as a result. It's a bit of a trap that's easy to fall into. Not to mention, characters that are able to hold their own in a fight are the ones most suited to the post-tragedy world. From a reader's perspective, we're most likely far more interested, generally, in the struggles of those who aren't accustomed to this sort of adversity. As a quick example, the ways in which a talented gardener puts her skills to use in order to survive is most likely more interesting than reading about a soldier fighting their way out of situations with heavy weaponry.

Of course, your mileage may vary on all of this, but that's my two monocoins on the subject.

Just a normal guy.
^ A gardener sounds pretty good. Might be my next character.

In any case, Junko is right. Non-fighters using their talent for fighting instead does sound better than fighters using their talent for fighting.

Great, I'm being outvoted. At the current state, people favour non-combat oriented skills.

I beg to differ.

Why? Firstly, the best thing (according to me) about this forum is that you can write paragraph after paragraph of how Anastrianna massacres reserves, or how David defends a group of injured, without running into people who respond with one sentence or into problematic restrictions on godmodding.

Another reason? It's in the name. I like fighting, and I believe combat writing is my best skill. Besides, just the fighting style (or lack thereof) can also tell a lot about a character.

Non-combat here. Without repeating what Alice said, I just feel there's far more choice in what you can do with them, and stuff.. Not much else to say, really!

When I began RPing, I started with combative characters for the sole purpose of fighting other characters in death matches. It was fun for a couple of months and met a decent amount of folks who were great RPers (all of them retired), but RP fights got really ridiculous in the later years. There was a lot of argument and discussions about rules, but with it being the clusterfuck that it is now, most "1v1" end in petty squabbles or just die away.

Luckily for me, I enjoy the non-combative characters because it's refreshing and more interesting to develop. I don't mind combative characters, but it's a huge hassle to organize if your writing style doesn't flow or make proper distinctions in body movements and I tend to make a habit of overly detailing those fight posts because old habits die hard.

I gave my reason in RP & in private to Ross when discussing the question.

Careful reasoning and opinions? Nope.

If you like fighting characters, good for you. Enjoy talking your way out of a fight? Good for you. I have no preference. I could easily do both. (:

Non Fighting Based in general

I feel that when someone bases something around fighting, its basing it around what the character can mechanically do rather then the character themselves.

You see it happen a lot in things with personalized systems, I once ran a fan project for Homestuck where we had to create a bunch of classes and aspects, and people where often caught up on how the classpect would work mechanically they ignore the meaning of it.

Ofcourse his doesn't mean you can't have a fighting based character, Sakura, Mukuru and Ishhiki are all canon example that I would call characters that their fighting is a key part of their character and is worked into their character rather then as how their character works.

Its just that this is a personalized system, and half the fun of that is seeing creative idea's that explore the character well, it adds a new layer to them, similar to how a nickname might. But when you focus too much on mechanics and not on their actual title, I find it annoying.

P.S. On a side note also, this poll seems to suggest that its a balance between fighting and non fighting characters, but really there aren't that many fighting characters. I think this pole might have worked better if you separated it a bit more.

For example, we have fighting (maybe better described as physical) titles as mentioned, whom are about a physical skill. (see SDHL Swimmer or SDHL Weapon Specialist)

Then there are feild titles that are based around knowledge of a certain field of science or industry (see SDHL Detective or SDHL Philospher)

Then there are creation titles, that are based around creating/proforming a work of art or equipment (see SDHL Traditional Dancer or SDHL Artist)

And then I guess there's also the slightly more unique one that would be hard to nail down to a certain type since they are either inate based on something other then skill or simply not easy to catagorize (see SDHL Princess or SDHL Jack of all Trades)

These all have their disadvantages:

physicals can often become mechanical
feilds generally need you to also have some knowledge in it
creation needs to you atleast be creative enough to describe something of what its like
and unique ones are going to be innately harder to use and understand

If we want to go further we can seperate physical into sport and combat, feild into science and abition, create into art and application, and uniue into innate and unique

God I'm like the only guy voting for fighting-based abilities. I'm the minority here. So sad...
