Destroy It Yourself; Buying tools

I needed a protractor rule for several Destroy It Yourself Projects, nothing fancy. I did the usual Google and amongst the usual digital protractors costing an arm and a leg was an old fashioned one for less than a £fiver postage free.
I was not expecting much for that price.
It has just arrived and is FAR better than I expected and made out of steel:-

Why? I have other Silverline products and have had no problems with them.

Fine for a bit of DIY or for the hobbyist, not the sort of stuff you'd buy if you made your living from your tools, better works out cheaper in the longer term.

I just have the little plastic one that came with my maths/geometry/calculus kit. I still have my Faber and Faber slide-rule somewhere.

Yes. I probably have a slide rule around somewhere too, in the same box as my stylus for writing Cuneiform on clay tablets.

Now, I'm 43 and I can remember French Curves being in the technical drawing class at my middle-school (age 9 -13), but we never actually got to use them.

I used to have a set on hand but when the summer holiday job ended she went back to france and i went on with my degree...

Ahem. Right one cold shower later where was I ...

Ah. Yes. Sorry. Actually, I do have a set of them, although I never quite worked out what to do with them.

I also have a slide rule, which I know exactly how to use ...

And yes there are many items in my toolboxes that would not last a month if I were using them in a job that paid the mortgage, the fact I only use them a couple of times a month - if that - is the clue to their apparent longevity.

I still have a very fancy set of Staetler French Curves along with a lot of other manual drafting gear. I have been using AutoCAD (and later, Inventor) in my professional life since about 1995 and I have no idea why I hang on to that stuff.

Nostalgia, I guess.

I've got some French curves for drawing...still in the packet. I can't think of a much use for them...though might be good for stirring paint.

My DIY is get the drill out and get started......and if its too complicated I'll pay someone.

It looks like something young master 'M Lance' might have turned out during 'plastic working' class at school.

Trust me people, I'm brilliant at 'Destroy it yourself' type stuff. If ever I suggest a bit of DIY Mrs R has palpitations. I recently made a 'cat ladder' and it must be said the finished article is in my opinion pretty good. I had to make it when Mrs R was out, she would have had kittens if she knew what I was doing lol.

That's alright for your purpose, that type of tool is usually inferior in that the rulings etc are not indented & the ink used isless durable.

For occasional use, they are just fine.

Generally, 'vintage' tool quality is\was better than the imported stuff of today, taking 'wear & tear' into account.

Should have just printed one off the interweb, then printed off a second one after the first one blows away while you are using it outside.

I have two modern ring enlargers, rubbish, leaving marks on the metal, i am now using a pinfolds 1880's ring enlarger, what a neat and useable bit of kit built over a 120 years ago.

Same as that Papa, tools will last forever if looked after and used correctly and Toolstation is only 2 miles from me they are far cheaper than the other"sheds" and can deliver free if the purchase price is over a certain amount.

What - in the name of Thors Undergusset - is a "Ring Enlarger" ? :rubchin:
It be a specialised tensioner to enlarge 'rings', hopefully without busting them. Works best if the ring of good and homogenous quality and not too brittle. It got to have an approved modulus of elasticity rating.

I used to cast and swage gold and silver when I were a dental technician.
