The Labeque sisters.

I have just treated myself to a six cd collection of theirs and am currently listening to their rendition of Milhaud's Scaramouche - makes me want to throw my own piano out of the window!!

Fabulous.

I'm listening to the Bach Christmas Oratorio 'cause I gotta sing the Tenor part in five months from now. Our choir is about four times the size of this one but the orchestra is almost identical. Go for Baroque, I sez.

The theatre I work at has just confirmed a date for The Fureys next year so today at work I was reacquainting myself with some of their songs.

The Fureys are a great Irish band with many great songs; but one of their most famous - The Green Fields Of France - was actually written by a man called Eric Bogle.

So I've been looking at some of his other stuff, and just found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV8gf-r9VOk

A genuinely brilliant song.

LOL! Was that meant as a compliment g!! LOL! Well, I guess coming from you, it'll have to do. Thanks. Well, I didn't care much for the Johnny Winter track, which sounded like nonsence to me, and I'm not sure which Isley Brothers song you might be thinking of. Re: Winters; the title alone's enough to put me off, 'I love everybody'!!? - give us a break please, but are you quite sure you fully understand what's meant by a guitar-riff g? As a non musician, who though loves wonderful music, it had me confused for a long time until I watched that programme the other night. I'm still not convinced that you truly understand what a riff is. If you don't, just ask me nicely and I'll explain properly to you!! :)

What B is referring to is the BBC 4 documentary on the "Riff"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b049mtxw/the-joy-of-the-guitar-riff

Excellent programme, but missed quite a few fiffs out, especially bass ones, but did note Nile Rogers' contributions.

They were quite right about Smoke On The Water, just about every guitarist I've ever known can play it, and will have learnt it when they first picked up a guitar.

They missed a couple of brilliant bass riffs, though:

The first sounds reggae-influenced, and for the second: "thank you hugely Ian for a massive tune"! I still recall going in to work the following day after seeing him on TOP and saying to my mates "watch for that song being No.1", and if I'm not very mistaken, it soon was. Thanks again Ian, and RIP!

My 11 year old son learned to play a passable version on his little electric axe a year ago.

Lots of fuzz ...

It wasnt meant as a compliment, it was mild mockery. If you could read properly you would have realised that I suggested two old ( late 60s early 70s) celebrated guitarists and two different styles that may be of interest. Nothing more than that
You could take any Isley brother track and it would demonstrate the unique guitar style.Try ' who's that lady?'( if the title doesn't turn you off) and you will hear Ernie Isley's celebrated guitar riff . However this may be little too much for you to bear. If it is then click this link straight away and you will be back in your comfort zone... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lIup-Dma1I
I didnt expect you to like the suggested track or artist and in retrospect I should not be surprised that you act like a snotty schoolgirl when given something outside of your comfort zone (the title alone's enough to put me off, 'I love everybody'!!?...oooh get you..)

Riff...In music, a riff is an ostinato; a repeated chord progression, pattern, or melody, often played by rhythmic instruments. The riff is the base of the musical composition. They are most common in rock music, funk, and jazz.
In music, an ostinato is a short pattern of notes which is repeated many times. The word "ostinato" is related to the word obstinate. It is like a musical idea which is being obstinate and will not go away.
Now we ALL know what a riff is...

What about Canon in D on a classical guitar?

Don't think Pachelbel has any riffs.....or ostinato's...(Could be wrong)

I have heard Pachelbel's Canon performed by: Orchestras, Violins, French Horns, Oboes, Voices, Bagpipes, Bolivian Pan Pipes, Hammond B3 organs, Classical Guitars, Les Paul Guitars, Mellotrons, Moog synthesizers, Theremins, Lutes, Celtic Harps, Cavalry Bugles ... and I still get startled every time that cannon goes off.

Now I love Pachelbel's Canon, certainly in my top 10 favourites of all time.

And on guitar it is fantastic.

But, for me (I'm a bit of a metal-head) this is just about the best guitar version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xjJXT0C0X4
