I have become a serious fan of the Welsh composer Carl Jenkins since I was part of performing the Armed Man in and around Nov 11th a few years back.

Here is his choral version of part of Beethoven's 7th.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsEGSkeO6l0

Sheer brilliance I find this one enthralling

http://youtu.be/ibwxzxER_pY
I have sung that (the tenor part) as part of a 100 voice choir.

Nocturne No.1 in Eb minor Opus 33 by Gabriel Faure
( I performed Faure's requiem a record seven times this Easter ... and also Cantique de Jean Racine with a little forty person church choir on Easter morning! this wasn't by design, either. it was through a series of coincidences. )

I understand his Requiem is one of his most popular works, as are his Nocturnes.

This guy, Daryl Stuermer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akE_EW7Kda8

I saw him at a weekend-long jazz festival on an outdoor stage (a ten minute walk from my door) last night. He played with the last incarnation of Genesis (which I had seen on stage 40 years ago!). Anyway, I was impressed with his command of his instrument. It was pretty rocky jazz although his own compositions tended to be pretty jazzy rock.

Ah, the days of booze, drugs, self indulgence {sex and consumerism] and protest.

Don't forget the saying [ref. the booze and drugs] - 'If you can remember anything about the sixties, you weren't really there'. - Paul Kantner

How about a touch of déjà vu:

May I recommend the three disc box set: 'Peace and Love' [The Woodstock Generation.]

What? It's absolute genius, the whole album is unbelievable, no one else would ever be able to recreate those exact sounds. You just don't appreciate experimental music

Happy Hippy times.

Thanks, two good ones.

I think I’ve got most of the good stuff on that box set and I might pass on Tiny Tim’s “Tip Toe Thru’ The Tulips”

Gand - Ah yes, the good old days of MAD, of Vulcan nuke bombers warming up at the end of RAF Waddington's main runway, and the once a month testing of the 4 minute warning sirens.

Oh, and:

http://youtu.be/K-JKWDC6fDs
http://youtu.be/k8zmkzshUvE

ps. When the Kinks sang "oh, yes he is", did you sing/shout back, "oh, no he isn't!"?

Tonight, I be mostly listening to:

Brand X.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGwKuANKdlg

See if you can guess the drummer, if you don't already know. :)
Excellent.

Myself, I prefer the one album Chuck Burgi drummed on, Masques.

I like all of their albums though, Masques and Morroccan Roll are stand-out.

Thunderclap Newman - Something in the air

Anyone catch the Proms last night (Friday 12th?) Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto, played by a Russian pianist, Denis Matsuev. Breathtaking. I have never heard any pianist..ever...play with such technique and feeling. An epic performance.
