This massive cock-up by HMRC has of course nothing whatsoever to do with "work experience" at no pay people being used by HMRC instead of people who knew what they were doing. (Conveniently not mentioned in the news item.) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/tax/11150266/Five-million-UK-workers-face-uncertainty-after-tax-bills-wrongly-calculated-twice-in-HMRC-blunder.html Five million UK workers face uncertainty after tax bills wrongly calculated twice in HMRC blunder Uncertainty for millions as a leaked email shows the taxman made miscalculations in many 'final' bills for last year By Dan Hyde, Consumer Affairs Editor 10:00PM BST 08 Oct 2014 More than five million British workers face uncertainty after leaked emails revealed that their tax bills for last year may have been wrongly calculated. HM Revenue and Customs has privately admitted that those who underpaid or overpaid income tax last year may still have paid the wrong amount. Most have already been sent new tax demands or sent repayments – but now face the prospect of having their bills recalculated once again. HMRC has stopped sending repayments until the crisis is resolved. Accountants expressed disbelief. Elaine Clark of the Cheapaccounting tax practice said: "This is extraordinary, a disaster, and heads need to roll at HMRC." HMRC said tens of thousands would ultimately be affected but admitted it currently had no idea about the scale of problem. |

Hardly surprising, considering their staff appraisal system is a defined 20/70/10 split, where 10% of the staff are marked "unsatisfactory" whether they are bad performers or not. This hugely demotivating system was abandoned by Microsoft, and is widely credited as being responsible for Microsoft's "lost 10 years". The system was, of course, introduced to HMRC whether the unions thought it was a good idea or not. I wonder if the Head of the Tax Department and his ten lower minions run the same system where at least one of them a year is marked to fail and subject to dismissal? No? Wonder why? |

I don't know why "Cheapaccounting tax practice" made me laugh but there you are. Typical HMRC, apparently we have a great tax system compared to loads of others, I dread to think what they are like then.... |

It just goes to show how over complicated our tax laws and not fit for purpose they are, even HMRC does not understand them, HMRC do not know how much some thousands of taxpayers either owe or are owed. Time to make them much simpler, I speak as one who has been overcharged twice in the last 14 months they have had to pay back, my accountant has now asked them to complete a third reassessment of my tax and is very confident that they still owe me money.

Typical symptom of the gross incompetence of this Tory government. They couldn't even run a tap without detailed instructions, never mind a taxation department with any sign of competence. |

As predictable as night follows day the present tax regulations were made simple and easy to understand by Gordon Gormless Brown, he added volumes of gobbledegook to the existing reams of gobbledegook. |

If so, we have had nearly five years of the super (failing) Tories. |

As Ctoo stated they have had five years to sort things out, but haven't and instead made things even worse! Never mind if last night's UKIP debacle is anything to go by, the Tory incompetents will be given their marching orders in 7 months time, thank goodness! Edited by Lewis, Oct 10 2014, 06:55 AM.

I'm sure everyone who has dealings with revenue and customs knows how incompetent they are. Is it a political point that you wish to make, as I have had dealings with them for decades and it has always been so? So probably best not. |

For goodness sake get real HMRC is in the public sector, surely you do not want to privatise it in order to make it work better? Dreaming that a Labour Gov would make a difference is bizarre. |
